Really fascinating interview with Peter Jackson around his journey with the Melbourne Football Club.

Talks about the period around Mark Neeld era and also the Paul Roos recruitment. 

Also talks about flying to Sydney to catch up with James McDonald and mend that relationship with him and inviting him back to the club. Said it was an emotional meeting with junior and pointed to having a lot of scarring that need to be repaired.

Well worth a listen.

    A great listen. So much of where we are now stems bk to Jackson and Roos. If we win they will also be immortalised in our history I reckon.

    Thanks Daz that was a great listen. Must say I never realised that getting Roos was to buy time, while they changed the place. Also now see Demetriou in a different light, as the bloke who got us PJ and then supported him when he needed it.

    PJ started the wheels in motion, but once those wheels were in motion, many others have carried the load as well.

    The day I saw this interview, I was convinced we were on the right track and he was the right bloke for the job.

    No spin. Concise, honest and resonant. And uncompromising without being pretentious or brutal for the sake of it.

    If Perty gets the flag next Saturday, he’ll have more tangible evidence for his case that he is the best CEO we’ve had. But make no mistake, like the Roos appointment, if we don’t get PJ in ‘13, I genuinely fear what might have happened to our club. Without him, we may not exist.

    Funny you say that.

    Was talking to a mate the other day and telling him Demetrio was very important to regenerating the club.

    Supporter/Fan power also can't be underestimated here, it was a lot of us that reached out to Demetrio to do something as most of us couldn't see a way out if it was left to the club alone.

    To his credit, he did.

    Never underestimate people power.

    Jackson, as has been proven was the right man for the job.

    I had a mate working with the AFL at the time who had been involved in some projects with him.

    He told me then that we had the right man. No BS, just gets it done.

    A couple of years ago I went to a dinner ( not by the club ) and speakers were Pj and PR  , very insightful evening.

    Love that fact that PJ is pretty much a dyed in the wool Dee now. This guy should get the freedom of the city if we bring home the bacon on Saturday.

    Thanks Dazzle for posting this great interview, I always knew that PJ was the architect that breathed life back into this once mighty club of ours. It is so relevant to then and now I didn’t realise how important Demetriou was to our resurrection though, just listening to PJ and knowing that he is now a Demon shows what a great contribution and commitment he made to our club and I will be eternally grateful that he accepted the challenge back in 2013. It has taken 8 years but we are now starting to enjoy the fruits of their labour and the great people around them, also interesting that Simon’s footy philosophy was so strongly aligned to Roos and PJ’s.

    Andy D may have deserved a lot of criticism but he always had our back.  For years he deflected the mfc tanking talk.  Then while he was overseas Anderson pulls this tanking investigation out of a hat and we were sunk.

    Sometimes I think our 'first football and oldest football club' history is overplayed.  But It attracted PJ to want to drag us out of our abyss.

    Forever grateful to all who played a role in getting us back on track.

    Good interview, nothing I hadn’t heard before, but it is always a pleasure to listen to PJ speak. 
    Yes Roos was bought in to “buy time” he had credentials. 
    PJ (and Roos) knew it would take time on field

    PJ pretty much related the same stories on the ‘land podcast 

    He will be a proud man if we pull off number 13 next week

    Lots to unpack and I might get to it over the next couple of days, but over the interviews posted here a couple of things

    1/ I’ll take him as a boss any day of the week. Hell I’ll even take a pay cut and love it

    2/ How refreshing to hear things said as it was. He didn’t pot anyone or sell snake oil, just (as we well knew) the club had stuffed up almost every basic thing it had to do BUT it so many people crying out for leadership like his 

    3/ a bit of a weird one, and I should probably relook to see if I saw it right, but in the gig every time he mentioned culture or some such his eyes flicked to Roos. A sorta I’m not pissing in your pocket look. Maybe I read too much into it but I reckon the deal might have been shook on not long after that

    What a great listen, the club has come so far and its the credit of PJ, Roos and all of the other unsung administrators who have lead this club out of that darkness. Jesus it was shocking to think about.

    Great interview.

    Peter Jackson really helped the Melbourne Football Club when it was in a  precarious position where it could have folded, merged or been moved to Tasmania.

    I am eternally grateful of the efforts of Peter Jackson when he was the CEO of the Melbourne Football Club.

    Glad to hear he will also be cheering on the Demons this week on Grand Final day too!

      A few years ago, the Melbourne Football Club produced a documentary about the decade in which it rose from its dystopic purgatory of regular thrashings to the euphoria of a premiership victory. That entire period could have been compressed in a fast motion version of the 2025 season to date as the Demons went from embarrassing basket case to glorious winner in an unexpected victory over the Dockers last Saturday. They transformed in a single week from a team that put in a pedestrian effort of predictably kicking the ball long down the line into attack that made a very ordinary Bombers outfit look like worldbeaters into a slick, fast moving side with urgency and a willingness to handball and create play with shorter kicks and by changing angles to generate an element of chaos that yielded six goals in each of the opening quarters against Freo.

      Round 7 gets underway in iconic fashion with the traditional ANZAC Day blockbuster. The high-flying Magpies will be looking to solidify their spot atop the ladder, while the Bombers are desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top eight. Later that evening, Fremantle will be out to redeem themselves after a disappointing loss to the Demons, facing a hungry Adelaide side with eyes firmly set on breaking into the top four. Saturday serves up a triple-header of footy action. The Lions will be looking to consolidate their Top 2 spot as they head to Marvel Stadium to clash with the Saints. Over in Adelaide, Port Adelaide will be strong favourites at home against a struggling North Melbourne. The day wraps up with a fiery encounter in Canberra, where the Giants and Bulldogs renew their bitter rivalry. Sunday’s schedule kicks off with the Suns aiming to bounce back from their shock defeat to Richmond, taking on the out of form Swans.Then the Blues will be out to claim a major scalp when they battle the Cats at the MCG.       For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

      The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
