Allen Jackovich

Id have to find a spot for Aaron Davey, probably in place of Fritsch, Brad Greene fairly stiff to miss to.

FF: Davey, Lyon, Farmer

R: Gawn, Oliver, T. Viney

IC: Jakovich, Stynes, Green, McDonald

Coach: Neale Daniher

I’d hate to be the bloke to break it to Jaka that he was starting on the bench! 😄

There are possibly too many permutations and combinations but the following players, who do not appear in all selections,  IMO must be included in any team that claims to represent the best:

Travis Johnstone; Brett Lovett; Alan Jackovich (before injury); Liam Jurrah (before injury)

IMO questionable selections included in the above teams include Ingerson, J Viney, Jones,  J McDonald, Jetta, Hibbert; Langdon; Fritsch; Salem.

With a goal to goal line of May, Neitz, Oliver, Schwarz and Jackovich we could take on and beat the world.

How anyone could contemplate a side without Brett Lovett is beyond me. Ditto Aaron Davey.

mine:
B: Whelan - May - Lever
HB: B Lovett - Neitz - Yze
C: Tingay - Petracca - Johnstone
HF: Lyon - Schwarz - Davey
F: Robertson - Jakovich - Farmer
Foll: Gawn - Oliver - T Viney
I/c: Stynes - S Febey - J McDonald - Jurrah

Lovett for Salem, Bruce for Jones, Green for Robertson - you have too many high flyers otherwise - Tingay for Johnstone, and Alan Johnson for Ingerson. ( Johnson finished in 1990 so technically, he qualifies.) Whelan for Febey, the most unlucky one to miss. With May, Neitz and Lever you have enough tall timber down back, you can throw Lyon down there if needed and you bring on Jakovich.  Sounds like the plan to me...

Ergo:

Whelan, May, Johnson

Lovett, Neitz, Lever

Yze, Bruce, Tingay

Green, Schwartz, Petracca

Davey, Lyon, Framer

Gawn, Oliver, T.Viney

Stynes, Jones, Jakovich, S.Febey,

Readung this I have visions of Schwartz and Jakovich playing chf and ff in this current side. Wow.

B: Whelan, May, Lever
HB: S. Febey, Ingerson, Salem
C: Tingay, Oliver, Woewodin
HF: Petracca, Schwarz, Bruce
F: Davey, Neitz, Lyon
Foll: Gawn, Jones, Yze
Int: Stynes, Jakovich, Green, Wight
Emg: Robertson, Johnstone , White, J. McDonald

Almost tempted to slaughter the sacred cow and go for Jeff White over Stynes but I don't think the resting ruckman will need to kick too many goals with that forward line.

Hayden Lamaro and Isaac Weetra stiff to miss.

I don't think Bruce would get a a game at his peak in the current squad, let alone best team since 1990.

J Viney would be more deserving.

I’m a bit surprised with the amount of teams without Nate Jones in them.

Team captain, 3x B&F and 2nd for all time games played made him a certain starter for mine.

What about Brent Grgic?

Btw no way Jeff White is ahead of Stynes, accept for not running over the mark and all.

3 time VFL team of team of the year (basically All Australian before it existed), would be the first picked for me as he just fits straight in on HBF whereas Lyon, Oliver, Petracca etc... are all moral's to be in and better players, but there could be some query as to the actual position (Neitz for me as an example is CHB, but could understand why some may say FF).
As a useless side note often overlooked for FF; Darren Bennett is the highest goal scorer in a year by a Melbourne player from 1990 onwards (87 in 1990 which makes him the highest since Fred Fanning and second in history I believe @Supermercado?) although it really was only 1989-1991 he was of note so I can understand why no one has him in.

I'd have this as almost bang on, except Jurrah wasn't around long enough to show a consistent year let alone a career (I'd have him in the Sean Charles category, exciting for a brief period). I'd replace him with Jones or even the Bald Eagle who at his best was an exceptional player before injuries. I think in 3 years time, a few more of the current crop hopefully would have this changed up a bit.

87 is equal third for most goals in a season.

Goals Player Year
1 97 Fred Fanning 1947
2 89 Norm Smith 1941
3 87 Fred Fanning 1944
3 87 Darren Bennett 1990
5 86 Norm Smith 1940
6 80 Norm Smith 1938
7 79 Garry Lyon 1994
8 77 Gerard Healy 1982
8 77 Garry Lyon 1995
10 76 Mark Jackson 1982
10 76 Mark Jackson 1981
10 76 Jeff Farmer 2000
