Toby Greene umpire contact

I get he has to advocate for his client, but this just rings at out of touch with the community's pulse on this. I'd be worried about riling the tribunal with this kind or argument. "The message has already rung clear ... in the community."  Rubbish.

Handing down merely a fine will ring a bell in the community that the sanctity of umpires has been diluted. That is untenable. The tribunal must be firm in its verdict here.

So adjusting for different pay scales how much should amateurs be paid to belt an umpire? 🤦‍♂️

As I've written before, Greene has been cited 21 times, fined $29, 000 in total. For a highly paid player like him that's peanuts. And it certainly doesn't deter him. Fines in such a circumstance are giving him the Greene light to add to his status as a repeat offender.

So he's been reprimanded 21 times and we are supposed to believe he is now remorseful, coincidentally when the stakes are high for him/GWS?

Spare me.

I'd like him to get a good whack for this, 3-4 weeks minimum and then I'd like them to say this is your 22nd offence mate, we are putting a VERY big suspended sentence on top. 10 weeks extra would be about right. You can be one of the best players in the game, but you can also start playing by our rules or start suffering the consequences.

I think the bugger should be made play for North Melbourne for the next three years as well..

Ihle says a fine should suffice given “the message has already rung clear as a bell in the community…”

Clearly it hasn’t coz here we are.

Easy now, it’s not like he murdered someone. 😝

Can't believe he pleaded not guilty. Throw the book at him. 6+ weeks.

That's exactly what I thought.

Stupid beyond words given he can't deny contact.

Will deservedly add 2 weeks to his penalty, impacting the start of their 2022 season.

What are they thinking?

I completely agree.
I'm sure if he was suspended instead of fined on some of those 21 occasions he would have changed his on field actions.

He is a perpetual pest who is 28 years old and should absolutely know better by now, but he thinks he can get away with it and that's the AFL's fault.

They found that his actions were 'disrespectful, demonstrative and aggressive'. The only part that he was not found guilty of was 'forceful' contact.

If he was found to make contact with an umpire that was aggressive then it's very unlikely that he's going to come out of this well.

GREENE DEPARTS TRIBUNAL

12.56pm: Toby Greene has been forced to leave the AFL Tribunal, as Greater Western Sydney has a flight to catch to Western Australia for Friday night's semi-final against Geelong. The Tribunal has been informed that he will phone in on his way to the airport.

Anyone else think this is disrespectful to the Tribunal.  Like he has assumed he will get off with a fine.  They fly on Chartered flights, surely they could hold the plane for another 30 minutes.

One would hope that is poor reporting and he asked to 'take leave of proceedings' rather than just up and go.

Read the room GWS. He won't need to make that flight!

GWS and Greene have no respect for a competition that is keeping their soulless club afloat.

Seemingly so.  But it seems reasonable for Greene to go to WA even if he's doomed for suspension.  He is their 'spiritual leader'.

Sam Edmund has tweeted that Greene has been "exccused from the hearing". I see nothing wrong with that. There's nothing further he needs to do and it's not like he's going to be taken into custody when the sentence is delivered.

The quote was from the AFL website and it seems like it was poor reporting.

Poor reporting aside.  They could hold the plane for 30 minutes and be there when sentenced.  imv it would be the smart and brave thing to do.

Headline should have been "Toby Greene Flight Risk"

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
