To be honest I think North are in a better financial situation than the Saints these days, don't know why they're always the first one to be named for relocation.

Tassie becomes 19th team - then a 20th team from NT (split games between Darwin/Alice/Cairns).

Then every team can play every other team once, bringing balance to the league.

 

Oh wait, no we'll still get 2 extra interstate trips and never play WCE or Geelong in Melbourne.

A relocated team has been reported to the best option favoured by the AFL. The only logical suspects are North and Saints. It’s a backward move to dilute the talent pool with another new club but would be a positive move to dilute the excess of Victorian suburban clubs for a more inclusive and balanced national competition. It is interesting to note that previous relocated clubs like Sydney and  Brisbane still have strong support in their former homes. A relocated club also will have solid support in their new home as there are no other codes to compete against and Tasmania is a football grass roots state. Now it’s time for the AFL to twist arms and dangle dollars in the air.

Posted this in an earlier thread on Tassie team. Dated 6 August before Carter.

Tasmanians are already committed to existing clubs and the state is too small to host a new team.

One the other hand if a Melbourne based team can be convinced/cajoled/coaxed/compelled to move across Bass Strait in the hope of picking up an extra supporter base, then it might work. A joint Victorian and Tasmanian partnership playing home games in Hobart, Launceston and Melbourne. North stand out as the obvious first, last and only choice.

When considering whether or not Tassie can support a team on its own, there is a relationship between population (proxy for money) and the number of national tier 1 competition teams (AFL and NFL) that can be supported. It takes minimum of 500,000 population to support one tier 1 team and Tassie barely qualifies.

Tier 2 and 3 competitions such as NBL, A-league, netball, AFLW and the multitude of cricket formats are more appropriate. They should stick to the lower tiers.

It should and probably will happen. Roos have no fanatical supporter base like the sainters who have a long history of misery to maintain.

Surprised there is no Tasmanian team in the A-League, would have been a good move whilst the AFL dillydally. 

At least the people of Tasmania are getting an NBL team, despite it having a horrible name.

So if we're sticking to 18 teams a relocation looks inevitable, at least we're performing at the right time. You'd assume that we would be safe with our history anyway but who knows.

The A-League is a basket case. I doubt that any of the clubs are truly financially sustainable. And the NRL is not really interested in making the Storm work. I can't see NRL working in Tasmania.

The AFL have been smart to put the onus on Tasmania's state government to fully fund a new team. There are already too many poor Victorian clubs and clubs needing support in NSW and Queensland.

The AFL doesn't have an endless pit of Money.  GWS and GC costs a bomb, AFLW will be costing a bomb and now with the expansion this is going to cost the AFL a lot of coin.  Wait a couple of seasons when the AFLW players push for pro-rata the same amount of money as the men, lets say the AFLW season is 50% length and time as AFL men, that will mean about 5mil per side salary cap.

Expansion isn't always in the best financial interest of the competition.

It’s interesting you mention AFLW because I reckon the smarter way the Tassie government could’ve gone about this is ensure that when the AFL was looking at expanding the women’s game they made sure that Tassie was getting a team. 

That could’ve generated interest for the game down that way and if done correctly could’ve stamped their authority to say we deserve a men’s team. Not unlike the tactic Football Australia are trying to employ by using the Women’s Football World Cup to promote the game as being attractive for a future men’s World Cup. 

I personally think that Tasmania have overplayed their hand and will now be without AFL matches for at least a few years.

Could there ever have been a better half forward line - Crosswell, Hart, Baldock.

How about this as a deal for North:

All future North home games at Marvel and all away games (proceeds to North) in Tasmania.

Strict rotation of away games between the other 17 clubs.

North based in Melbourne with commitment to relocation of staff and training facility to Tasmania in seven years or sooner.

North to play home based finals in Melbourne/Tasmania on an odd and even year basis.

 

IMO the AFL board wants North or Saints to move to Tassie. Of course they both will say "no way, no thanks!" but if push comes to shove, one of them may have no choice. The AFL can pull their licence. North have no cash or supporters, Saints have massive debts.

I think it will happen in stages. Eases the pain for the Vic club and supporters, allows Tassie to gradually plan their progress forward. For example, North still based at Arden St, but play 8-10 games in Tassie for a couple of years. Then a blue map of Tas is put on the front of jumper ('Tas govt sponsorship') surrounded by the blue/white stripes. Training gradually moves to Tas, as do players, coaches and admin. Eventually after 5-6 years, the NFC board agrees the club is to be named the Tasmania Kangaroos.
