Given England have progressed at the Euro’s, I was googling the origins of the chant/song “It’s coming home”.

I couldn’t help but draw a parallel…..

Both teams haven’t had a major trophy since the 1960’s

Both teams invented the modern version of the game.

Both teams are playing games at the home of football

Both teams have had long suffering supporters.

Im turning this into my new theme.  Come on dees bring football home…..

    Don’t tell me that. I can’t begin to enjoy any international tournament until England have been knocked out. 

    If someone were to tell me that we could only win the flag if they also won the Euros I’d be in a right bind.

    The authors of it's coming home Skinner and Baddiel were very liberal with the truth here. Scotland has more of a claim to inventing the modern game than England.

    As an aside I couldn't stand it if England won. World's worst supporters. Booing opposing national anthems, mixing politics with sport in every match. Nazi references 80 years on, really? Slamming their coach one minute, praising the him next. Picking fights, glassing innocent bystanders... Just filth.

    We still have hope that Belgium (perhaps minus Ezard and de Bruyne) or Italy will spoil the party. But if the Poms get over Ukraine the have a home final at Wembley. Makes a big difference.

    Watch England now lose to the Ukraine on penalties

    If they do win the Euros i'm glad i'm the other side of the world because their supporters will be insufferable

    Essendon supporters on steroids. They wreck every town centre their national team is based at tournaments on foreign soil.

    I’d take more pleasure in Collingwood’s demise if we were one of the long list of clubs to have actually beaten them this year.

    1.  The last time we won the flag, the Olympic Games were held in Tokyo.

    2.  We won our last flag in 1964, which is 57 years ago.  I was born in 1957 which is 64 years ago.

    Make of that what you will, numerologists!  :D

    Going by the Chinese calendar (and why wouldn’t you ?), we will play, but not necessarily win a grannie in 2024. The years we’ve played for the flag since and including 1964 were all in the year of the Dragon. 
    Make of that what you will, people who believe in that sh*t. ?

    And then there's the sock analogy. The Boston Red Sox and the MFC obviously wear the same colour sox/socks. They had the Curse of the Bambino while we have the Norm Smith curse (note the rhyme between Red Fox and Red Sox). So, we should anticipate that our drought is due to end because the Curse of the Bambino only went, oh, wait....86 years. Bugger.

    If you're looking for historical sporting alignments the only one that matters is this. 

    England won their only trophy in 1966 (thanks to a dodgy Russian linesman at Wembley)

    St Kilda won their only premiership in 1966. 

    Neither have won anything since. 

    Long may this continue.

    AmDamDemon would know. Was quietly sitting on the canal having a beer one day when all of a sudden more than 35 large and heavily-armoured 'divvy' vans come flying down the road (Weesperplein). I thought there had been a terrorist attack. No, a friendly between Holland and England at Johan Cruyff Arena. Over 100 arrests, including ugly earlier mob behaviour in the Red Light District. 

    Such behaviour isn't exclusive to English fans (there was also an incident between Dutch and German fans on Spegelgracht near my house a few months later), but the hooliganism is such an ingrained part of their culture. I abhor violence, but do get a small kick out of seeing these Neanderthals get the baton treatment. The Poms taunting police and then running like cowards in Porto a couple years ago is a personal favourite. 

    Unfortunately they see it as a badge of honour.

    I used to obnoxiously sing 'It's coming home' when watching games at home with other Dees supporting friends in 2018, then the following year I saw this video on YouTube that someone put together...

    Hi Skuit. An ex GF of mine is from Eindhoven so I have a big soft spot for the dutchies and PSV. I'm familiar with the hooligan element over there as well. 

    Being a Scot there are a hundred reasons why I won't support our southern neighbours in international football. Some political, some historical, some media related. Having lived in England for a number of years though it has always puzzled me why so many genuinely lovely, funny and welcoming individuals turn into such a grotesque collective every two years for the Euros or World Cup. It's the only time I wished I was somewhere else and brexit unfortunately has only emboldened them. 

    I think that there has been a deliberate attempt by both the media and political class over many years to airbrush the deeds and consequences of the English empire to the effect that it was at worst benign. As a result their people have been fed a deluded sense of place and entitlement in the world that the tories used to their benefit to get elected back in 2010 and continues today with their union jackery flag waving nationalism.

    Nice theory but England supporters are thick and arrogant and entitled. It's important that they're knocked out of any tournament they're in, either at the very early stages to rub their noses in it, or at the very late stages, to rub their noses in it.

    This will only get worse as a result of Brexit. The empire is shrinking inwards, until all they'll have left is England. And they'll be loving it.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road.       The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
