They started booing early in the first quarter and increased the volume during the game. As if they were affirming each free was a conspiracy theory against them. Hilarious.

Spoke to two Bomber supporters at work and OMG they were banging on like you wouldn't believe about how they were robbed.

When I said the Harmes decision was the same as two they didn't pay to us in the first quarter they said it was irrelevant because it was the first quarter!

They did conced that Devon Smith has a big mouth and needed to shut up. ("stop shouting at me Devon" will go down as one of the great umpire comments of all time!)

They also agreed that the great Stringer choked with his pathetic kick at goal in the final quarter.

Even the initial 50 metre penalty against  Perkins was completely correct. Not only was he late getting on the mark after he was requested to stay out he lined up at least a metre on the wrong side. There were actually two clear infringements.

you're totally correct

but i still think the whole protected area rule/penalty is a bit of an over-reaction........but that's the rule

I'd like clarity on that. If you are coming from the same direction as the payer with the ball, how do you man the mark ? is he meant to just leave the area ? Im unsure what the rule is. If he can man the mark then I thought it was harsh.

i think it was because he was too late. another bummer in front of him opted not to man the mark and ran up the field to defend

agree it's a very grey area and the initial 50m was quite technical

watch it here

Actually two infringements - so should it have been 150 meters, leaving him near Richmond station for the rest of the evening???

Obviously it's not just MFC, but probably the whole footballing public, that is ecstatic about TWSNBN losing this game.

Having said that would not like playing them this week with pressure rife to make up for the loss by ambivalent/ compliant umpires

Question, how many angles of cameras are available on the goal line if it is known, and does the Goal Umpire have to make a decision toward one preference or another, or not?

Its not that its technical, its that the AFL in typical fashion are over sealous to begin with , then it fades and players take advantage, then they pluck it out of their wazoo and everyone says WTF?

It then becomes rule of the week again etc. Last year they were on to it like a seagull in a hot chip then everyone forgot about it.

Just like the standing the mark rule. Players are standing 5-10 m to the side of the actual mark to try and coral the player with the ball into the pocket etc. Thats not how it was officiated at the beginning.

The attempted kick of harmes was let go as it was twice against us in the first qtr. But then they pay it randomly.

Then there was the goal of Jones where his foot was clearly over the line. When I grew up that was a point every day. The rule has never been changed but there you go.

Or pushing in the back when a player is kicking the ball. They let that go 5 times out of 10 but then bam it gets paid like it was to Spargo. Its infuriating.

No wonder people and players get frustrated.

Cheats have got the Cats this week. I usually passionately cheer on the teams that are against these two teams.

what to do this week?

might reluctantly hope for a cheats win to hopefully move 3 games clear of 5th and go close to securing top 4

cheats and handbags to play a controversial draw, with heaps of injuries and suspensions

Might be wrong but don't remember the push in the back as the opponent was kicking ever being a free kick down field.

4 days later and those lovely ESS fans haven’t stopped the complaining. It doesn’t help when someone that dislikes them so much like Derm comes up with this beauty on SEN. It reads better if you pretend he’s taking the pizz out of them.

When you’re channeling a bunch of choir boys and constantly attempting to. hijack the decision making process or appealing the umpires ruling karma applies.

Did they also concede they had more frees than us in the 2nd half (9-7)?

So now the Jones non-goal has been nominated for GOTY! What a farce.

God give me strength !!

That was by no jaundiced interpretation of any of the AFL's rules ,a goal !!!

Just watch it become goal of the year, for the sheer theatre of it !

Just had a look from the different angles.
Kicked it from the 2nd row behind the fence.
How they allowed that is beyond me.

Derm the germ hates Melbourne, every time he says something about Melbourne it’s negative. Remember the game against the dogs he was saying we were lucky, the ball bounced our way couple of times, always thought he was a [censored] but this year he’s gone to a new low. As a commentator he’s supposed to be objective but this [censored] doesn’t know what the word means!

Why though? Cos of the merger? Surely can't be from his playing days, or does he blame us for stopping then 3 or 4-peating (1990?)

If the goal umpire decides he or she has got no idea then he or she should NOT be making any decision. That's why they go up to the video. Get rid of Goal umpires, what do they do, wave flags and not much else. They aint needed like Cricket umpires and Line Judges at the tennis. The LBW rule in cricket.... don't get me started. Out and Not Out on the same delivery. WAFJ. Goal Umpires in the Afl are the same, how can you receive a goal or a point from the same shot on goal. The video has been used now a days to change the umpires decision because they made the Wrong decision. And that still doesn't happen. Sorry I'll stop now before i punch myself in the head.

I’ll use that as a comeback to these ESS work colleagues that have been hammering me for 3 days straight regarding the umps. Forgot to mention they’re of the opinion Derm hates them in order to prove their point.

Had to laugh when Tim Watson on 7 news last night said Essendon have resisted the urge to send a please explain to the AFL after Melbourne’s controversial win last Saturday night. Still struggling to see the controversy.

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
