Hi all,

It's the 100th episode of the Deeluded podcast this week, and we're very excited to interview President Kate Roffey. The club's flying at the moment, but there are plenty of big questions for the Board, including finding a new home base. We'd love to know what you'd like us to ask Kate—please leave your questions below, and we'll feature the best ones on the show.

Thanks!

Kiran & Nita

I understand there was an interview with Kate on the ABC this week, where she stated she had travelled and observed pre-game entertainment, and was encouraged by the US model. Personally I don't like all the hype that is the "Match Day experience" , Can you ask her why she thinks we need to suffer this intrusion. i.e Flashing lightning strikes and loud booms when we kick a goal, and blaring music during all the breaks. (I don't think I am alone here)

100% agree. I can't stand that stuff. Leave it for the BBL, footy doesn't need it. I hate having music blaring when you'd otherwise be chatting to the mate next to you about the game. Quit filling the silences, not required at all. It's just irritating.

IMO it is a bit above irritating.

The main question to ask new Melbourne Football Club President Kate Roffey has to be the progress of our home base (including administration, training, and a social club) in the MCG precinct area.

I would also ask her thoughts about how to make the club stronger?

What are we doing to increase our membership to 70,000+ in a few years time?

How are we looking to grow in the Casey area and possibly look to building a social club at Casey Fields?

What are the long term plans to make the Melbourne Football Club financially sustainable so that we don't have money issues ever again?

Are we looking to ask the AFL to increase the soft-cap for football departments again? Or are we happy with where it currently is? I know that the Demons coach Simon Goodwin mentioned in an interview that it should be increased to pre-COVID (2020) levels again.

Are the Demons going to consider lobbying the AFL to keep our Next Generation Academy (NGA) players for this year seeing as Mac Andrew may be a top 20 draft pick and it is unfair that the Western Bulldogs got their NGA player as the the number 1# draft pick last year and yet the system will not all the Demons to benefit from having the NGA this year?

And the last question needs to be what are we doing to continually strive for success so that both our men's and women's team have the best opportunity to win AFL and AFLW Premierships?

Of course we all want  to know but I fear that all you get is some more " we are waiting on the state government. " Use the time on questions you are liable to get an answer on.

I don't even get the logic of it. In gridiron there is so much down time that they (feel the ) need to fill the endless gaps when teams swap over, have time outs and set the play. Baseball is beyond dull so I'm not even going there. There's so much going on in an AFL game, that the fans need a little down time to catch up and discuss, watch replays etc. That's the main thing the AFL just don't get.

You are not alone in this attitude Demon Spurs. The volume of the music is ridiculous. The other stuff I can cop but not the music. Enough already !!!!

Yeah, this.

Might be a bit obvious. I think Demon supporters hope that the changeover was bloodless, but are certain it was significant. Can Kate assure us that it is not a sign of instability?

Just a tad more polite...

I reckon it's worth sending an email to Kate giving her your feedback about the Guantanamo match day experience.

Maybe even suggest that it's included in the next members survey to see what everyone thinks.

I haven't been to live game for about two years. So, I'm not sure if I can comment on the latest "activation techniques". I'm sure things haven't improved. The noise is just over the top.

I.e. Yes I know it's a goal and I'd prefer to talk to my family and friends about it rather than being belted by some sort of audible and visual torture.

It worked for me. I copied the whole web thingy from https to 66 and pasted into browser.

does one has to listen to it via itunes?

itunes, on my win10 desktop, doesn't allow me to move backwards or forwards

Nothing new really, I think she is a better public speaker than Bartlett.

Great job Kiran, I've been enjoying your weekly guest interviews, good point of difference from other pod's. Keep up the good work

Clearly the state government could give two hoots about the Dees, maybe we need to vote with our votes next election? I know it’s a minor issue on the global scale but they have plenty of cash for Footscray, Geelong, Carlton etc

Great interview Kiran and Nita.

For those who haven't heard it yet, I was moved by a story Kate Roffey related where Laurie (I think) had copped an injury, and given that she recalled Trac had a knee reco and had thus related through his first year, she suggested that he seek him out for a chat - he responded that Trac had already dropped around to visit him. That just speaks volumes on where we are as a club - culture, maturity, the love they have for each other - and Trac's personal qualities. Brilliant stuff.

Is it time for a woman to coach our AFLW team?

Sure! Not because she’s a woman, but because she is a great coach who happens to be a woman.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
