Brown for Melk 

 

I have no idea how Weid gets into this team though at the moment

Brown should come in for Jones.  

While I agree that Brown for Jones is the best net outcome in terms of quality/output, I can't see them dropping Jones straight after his 300th game. The optics are bad on this one, unless he is sore and they can say he is being ''managed".

    I agree with @Hannibal Inc. - B.Brown for Jones - we need to try to find a way for the extra tall to work in our structure and now is the time to start. Ideally we'll settle with 4 of B.Brown, Jackson, Fritsch, TMac and Weid in the team - I can't see us going with all 5 and I accept that we may ultimately find we need to revert to 3, but we need to try to make 4 work.

    Jones can be sub if we're worried about "the look" - others already in the 22 will need to fulfill his role

    Looked very sore tackling to me. He was a liability on a few occasions with that hand. Dangerous as always as a marking forward and goal kicker, but if his hand isn't 100%, I'd look at this change.

    this might be a weird way to think about this question, but what would Richmond do if they were in the same situation?

    Or what would the Hawks do? How does Melbourne, build depth, insurance, and put games into our younger players?

    Some sensible hedging could be:

    1. Sparrow in for Jones. 

    2. Chandler and Bedford come in for Kozzie and Spargo.

    3. TMac and Bayley Fritsch both rested for Ben Brown and Sam Weidemann.

     Melk or Jetta the sub.  Dont like seeing kids used as the sub when they need game time in the VFL.

    The issue isn't using kids as the sub, it's ensuring that if they don't get game time one week they do the next. We've been good with that all year, but the answer isn't necessarily to put them in the seniors. Chandler only comes in if he's going to do better than one of our forwards, and right now I don't think that's the case, so he goes to Casey.

    agree with that, didnt like Sparrow on the bench. 

     

    I certainly get the logic of not changing a winning formula and reading Goody's comments today he's decided he won't alter his line-up also with Brown and Weid to play North's VFL side on Thursday.

    And I also get that anyone who suggests a change against that philosophy at the moment is going to be howled down.

    But I am sorry, I just reckon that now is the perfect time to trial our planned new-look forward set-up which was halted in early Feb when Weid and Brown went down with injuries.

    I certainly understood the logic of staying loyal last week against Richmond and it paid off in droves. But there is no logic in keeping an elite footballer like Brown (my understanding he's our fifth highest paid player) in the twos simply because we are winning. 

    I mean let's say we win against North (which you have got to say is mega likely with our odds $1.01 at Sportsbet), then what are you gonna say to him - sorry I don't want to change a winning line-up. And what say we win against the following two weeks - home games against Sydney and Carlton - sorry Browny, you have to keep playing with Casey?

    Let's say it was Oliver who had been injured, would we be willing to make room for him or tell him he has to play VFL until we lose.

    Ultimately we have to confront and trial the three-headed monster and delaying the inevitable is just poor planning.

    Let's find out if it works and what tweaks need to be made to it well before the finals.

    Wouldn’t be surprised to see Brown in. Goodwin has stated he’s interested to see how a talk forward line goes. With all due respect to North, this might be the week to try it.

    I really do not like Harmes in this team. Liability disposal wise and we've gotten better once he left because now we don't have 1 too many inside mids.

    we are six rounds in, 6 tough games, quite a few in the wet with the longer quarters.  It would be a good time to see if there are seriously sore players.  Some kids might be feeling it, Jackson, Jordon, Rivers, Kozzi.  We need to keep the team fresh and the bye is a long way off.  We have real quality in the twos.

    If Jackson or T Mac are sore, I would manage one and bring Brown in.

    We'll have a 6 days break after this game to take on Sydney away and we need to be full of run.  Resting players is risky though as you don't want to send the message that this game is a done deal, but still...

    Interesting, Melksham is the kind of player you want in your team when you think you got a soft kill. But i guess so is B. Brown

    we 100% have to bring Brown in. Although things are great at the moment, if we want to be top 4 and seriously challenge over the next 6 months we need more fire power.

    We have scored 544 points and our highest goal scorer in Fristch on 12.

    On the cold wet days, low scoring games, we need Brown to pluck a few out of the air and win us games.  It will take him a few games to settle in so the time is now.

    Who comes out is hard. If everyone fit, I would drop Melk. Fritsch plays more HFF and Ben Brown goes to FF

    The problem with your oliver analogy is there are so many variations and roles that the person who was taking his role of he were injured. 

    For Brown to get in it's McDonald out. 

    It's not the players, it's the system. Richmond don't have a 3 headed monster and they are the bench mark.

    I'll be surprised if T MAC is playing in spite. That is not the only motive he is displaying ( if at all) He is just super fit and playing dangerously and can see the big picture.

    He may not have liked the edict but has responded superbly and is a giant reason why the forward line is a force to be reckoned with.

    He has always been a Club person and I believe as a Life Member is undoubtedly still!

    Sorry spite probably the wrong word. Got fit out of anger. Was not happy.

    I agree he is keeping ben Brown out of a gig, and will continue too I think

    We're going to cream North Melbourne - this is a new age starting Round One this year. Rub the crystallised sea salt into the Kangas' wounds in the process; give 'em a double dose for all the umpire-affected wins they had against us in the dark ages that reside as constant memories of MFC pain.

    The double dose would be BBrown to kick at least 5 goals against them and due to our sarcasm, throw Daw in for good measure  (he's tag-teamed with BB for a few years, now); Daw can kick 3 or 4 goals and with his reach, out-tap Goldstein a few times.

    I would say to jones now that you have hit 300 your now the perfect sub for us, he will get the games record and will still get to play every now and then.

    It’s all about balance, mobility, run and defensive pressure. Our current 22 have that in spades, Melksham aside. 

    I simply can’t see how BB or Weed help our game whilst TM continues to take marks and kick goals.

    The great unknowns. There is a couple of blokes who should be injured after that game. ANB, Oliver and Viney. I know they aren't forwards except for ANB but Brown for ANB appears ok

    BB is a top drawer forward. Injured in 2020 but before that he was always near and about the Coleman winner.

    Need to find room if even as a decoy forward.

    The VFL comp looks middling at best and will tell us little that we don't know.

    I was dissappointed by the SWs exclusion in the laat game but I now accept that I just dont know. The club keeps making the right call.

    I do want to see Bbb come in because he is a big star. Especially agsinst his old club.

    The way Jackson and Tmac have played it wont be them , they are the last out.

    I get the feeling Luke Jackson is going to be a big part of our future success for a very long time.

    But Bbb in please Mfc.

      The Sir Doug Nicholls Round kicks off in Darwin with a Top 4 clash between the Suns and the Hawks. On Friday night the Swans will be seeking to rebound from a challenging start to the season, while the Blues have the Top 8 in their sights after their sluggish start. Saturdays matches kick off with a blockbuster between the Collingwood and Kuwarna with the Magpies looking to maintain their strong form and the Crows aiming to make a statement on the road. The Power face a difficult task to revive their season against a resilient Cats side looking to make amends for their narrow loss last week. The Giants aim to reinforce their top-eight status, while the Dockers will be looking to break the travel hoodoo. The sole Saturday game is a critical matchup for both teams, as the Bulldogs strive to cemet their spot in the top six and the Bombers desperately want break into the 8. Sundays start with a bottom 3 clash between the Tigers and Kangaroos with both teams wanting to avoid the being in wooden spoon contention. The Round concludes with the Eagles still searching for their first win of the season, while the Saints look to keep their finals hopes alive with a crucial away victory.       And just like that, we’re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury to  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the team’s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - “nam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin amb” which roughly translated is “every heart beats true for the red and the blue.” >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last week’s below par performance.

    • REPORT: Hawthorn

      There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

      At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.
