The Choco Appreciation Thread

My only problem is that we may lose him to Collingwood mid season when Buckley gets the flick

What a brilliant interview. I could have listened to that all day.

If you all have a chance jump on the SEN podcast in an hour or so and have a listen.

He has no interest in a head coaching role anymore. Enjoys the development side of it and also working with Goodwin who gave glowing appraisal.

The most interesting part was he reached out to Garry Lyon few weeks ago to speak to the younger players. Apparently Garry is now coming down to the club and doing a little bit of work behind the scenes with the players? Had a big empathis in getting ex players back involved in the club.

By far the biggest recruit we've had in my time supporting the Dees.

Well he was getting interviewed, Ed Langdon was on RSN breakfast.

That's a ripper of a picture of him with Nev. The club are all talking about connection, that's it in a nutshell.

They asked him about that. Choco spoke glowingly of Jetta and his love for the indigenous.

Anyone thinking Jetta will be dropped are kidding themselves after hearing Williams saying that he's been playing really well.

Apparently one of his training drills with #15 & #29 is to have them run and carry and deliver into the forward 50 using him driving a golf buggy as a target.  They have to land the ball on the roof of the buggy.  Genius!

Great way to hit a moving target ?

Great pic.

How was Chocco out of the AFL system?   We should be thankful he was I suppose, we have landed a very rare gift.

Chocco is as mad as a cut snake and I love him. He has a strange mix of qualities:

  1. He is a communicator. Lots of people have football smarts and experience, but very few can convey it to others in a way that helps them learn or develop.
  2. He is passionate about people and passionate about footy.
  3. He is a genuine teacher
  4. Did I mention that he is stark raving nuts?
  5. He no longer wants to be a head coach
  6. He can balance being direct and corrective, while also encouraging and positive. A rare mix

Best MFC appointment since Paul Roos

and THAT photo of him and Nev. Wow.

We see coaches that frankly are boring and at times one dimensional. Lacking imagination.

However, Choco does not fit that mould. He brings difference to the club, and has that left field imagination and flair. This brings with it the risk that he will from time to time irritate people and even rub them up the wrong way.  People like Choco need those around them to value their difference and volatility.

I hope they can keep him. He may turn out to be just as valuable as some of our current stars on the field. Perhaps more valuable because he will influence many players with his ideas.

In a similar way, I hope Kate Roffey can bring “difference” to the Board.

Its long overdue that this Club does things differently. That it does not remain a bland club that stands for nothing. Our model is Richmond. It has been able to rebrand itself on and off the field with individuals being prepared to change old ways and embracing flair and difference.

I'm not going to get carried away because we will probably lose to Hawthorn next week, but it was clear as day Goodwin wasn't walking as tall as he was when he first came in. He looked tired and frustrated. Felt like he lost his voice in a way.

Watching Choco and Yze back him up from the bench or around the huddle is going make Goody walk taller and find his voice.

It is possible, no doubt. However, let us not overlook the immense footballing knowledge and coaching aptitudes of both Yze and Chocko (in equal portions) with definitive and mutual objectives for the MFC; their arrival and/or other equal talents have been long overdue in our Club. Strategically, the needs and transformations - and no doubt influences - of this pair on the whole team is highly evident, leading to greater onfield cohesion and method amongst the players. Understanding and execution onfield has vastly improved, even in the newbies, and can only improve further into a finals mentality.

That's a motorized buggy you're talking about SL?

I’m always a bit dubious of the impact assistant coaches can have but it seems pretty profound with Williams.

The comment by Tomlinson that he’s the type of person we needed at the club was significant.

I think assistant coaches are as important as a head coach.

Most players spend far more time with their line coach than they do the senior coach.

Strictly hearsay WM so can't be sure but seeing Chocco in action as the umpire for the praccie match at the start of the year I reckon it would have to be motorised.  (presents a fantastic image tbh)

Sadly I was listening to his interview and noticed that when asked he said that he had not used the golf cart sun roof yet for the Dees.  Hopefully it is on the way!

I could have told them that 20 years ago, would have saved a lot of pain.

At a fraction of the cost I imagine.

If only Mark was available back in 2010-11

He was exactly what Bails needed.
hindsight yes, but it still hurts what happened to Bails. He was a fine man

Could not agree more. It's important that he is remembered.

There's a bit more here re Langdon/Choco for those who didnt get beyond paywall...

Pardon my naivety, what is Williams's methodology on kicking that stands out from other coaches, or what other clubs do?

Well, from what Langdon says, it sounds like a lot of between the ears stuff, rather than technical.

He must have an effective way of getting through to them.

Decision making. Taking an extra .25 of a second to calm down and execute a better decision.

Maybe, unlike Ross Lyon, he actually finds the time to work on it.

It's all good and well to say people need to get better, but Williams must have the ability to teach them how

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
