The Danger of 5 years ago perhaps. He's better than Cripps and Shuey. Not sure about Neale but for some reason opposition coaches allow him to roam free. Reckon Clayton and the team will figure out how to break the tag. Sending him forward on the weekend worked in terms of him winning free kicks and taking a couple of marks. If he sharpens up his goal kicking he'll go up another level. Yep. That is the first serious tag Clarry has had to deal with. This week will be crucial learning for him. Frame by Frame 2 Quote

Oliver went past Cripps two years ago at 21 years of age and is just as good as Neale and Shuey. He doesn't have the influence of Dangerfield yet, because he doesn't hit the scoreboard, but Dangerfield didn't start influencing games until his 5th season. Oliver's been influencing games since his first season. He bossed Callan Ward in his first ever game at 65% TOG. He's incredibly durable and since coming into the game, the first time we've won a game without Oliver pulling the strings in our midfield was literally last Sunday night. It's mind-blowing how so many Melbourne supporters fail to see how good Oliver is. I think I highlighted in both my previous posts that I think Oliver is a gun. I am under no illusion that he is an inside and contested beast. However I also don't think he is the absolute superstar that you make him out to be. Our team has constantly come under fire for ball use and forward 50 connection. Granted that is not his role per se, but if Merrett or Josh Kelly or Whitfield is getable, then i'd have a long hard look at it. Do i want to get rid of Oliver? Not for a second. But who else on our list has enough currency to get any one of those players onto our list? Edited April 6, 2021 by CYB 1 Quote
Lord Travis 10,817 Posted April 6, 2021 Posted April 6, 2021 Petracca talks are well underway. Sounds like an extension will get done this season. Likely it will be a decent deal, but not a one club kind of deal, so he’ll be a free agent again in a few years. Oliver’s contract is more about money than anything. Club has been in dialogue with his manager, but they’re still not close. Club wants to lock him in longer term, but he and manager are pushing for short contract on bigger dollars and then becoming a free agent after that. If he doesn’t get to play finals consistently in the coming years, he’ll chase free agency to a stronger club. This one will drag out a bit from what I heard. Hopefully it gets done. Clarry is a gun and it would be a disaster to see the best inside mid we’ve had in my lifetime walk out on the club. 12 1 Quote

Just get it over and done with. I prefer shorter contracts anyways. GWS and Collingwood have handicapped themselves because of ridiculous long term deals. If we are successful he'll re-sign thereafter. If we're not well he deserves a crack elsewhere. 5 Quote

Dr.D 1,771 Posted April 6, 2021 Posted April 6, 2021 he didn't handle the tag with a maturity that I expected. After 5 mins he had already conceded that he wasn't going to get the ball and started setting blocks for petracca. It was a very defeatist mindset Quote

Merrett needs the ball fed out to him. Oliver is the player to do that. You can have all the outside skills in the world, but games, and finals, are won in contests. And nobody is a better ball getter in the contest than Oliver. Especially his ability to extract a lightening quick handball out of a scrum. Way too underappreciated Edited April 6, 2021 by layzie 4 Quote

He put a block so his teammate can have a clear run at the ball while he was being heavily tagged? I thought that except for losing his cool once, he took it on the chin and actually played really well up forward, except for his goal conversion. If he kicks 3 goals is anyone even talking about his game? 7 Quote
Pates 9,695 Posted April 6, 2021 Posted April 6, 2021 Here’s the thing for both Trac and Clarry, some clubs over the last 10-20 year have managed to create history and dynasties by keep the list together because the players have bought into something that means more than money. I guarantee you that there are players from the past that have taken a contract that yielded them say an extra $300k but sacrificed the chance of playing in a premiership. They might say differently but I bet you they’d trade that extra $$$ and more to have a premiership medal. This doesn’t mean that Trac and Clarry should undervalue themselves, but should we keep playing well and give ourselves a genuine shot at the big one, these two may well need to make the choice: money or legacy. I think if we keep playing well and winning then these two (and other important players) won’t be going anywhere. Quote
DubDee 26,667 Posted April 6, 2021 Posted April 6, 2021 I reckon Trac would be valued and rated higher outside the club than Clarry. The coin Trac would get thrown at him next year would be ridiculous. Would be fantastic to lock him in. Should hopefully help getting Clarry's signature also. in the meantime - win games MFC!! 1 Quote

He's going to get tagged, and if he lets it's work as well as De Bore's job on him did, he'll be seeing it every week. Cats will target him in a big way. Needs to keep his head cool. Even if he doesn’t play super well, losing his cool will invite more. 1 Quote
