What a ridiculous notion. Based on that logic, we should drop Stephen May because he is 29 and bring in Harry Petty immediately because he is younger and out of contract. Regardless of form.

 No we obviously shouldn't drop May hes a superstar.    T Mac isn't, hes easily replaceable.

Now ask yourself why every team in the comp would want Weid?   It would be so Melbourne to lose our young KPF while going into 2022 with two almost 30 year old injury prone tall forwards.

You don't flirt with your form. You pick the side that gets it done for you. If T-Mac's form drops away, you drop him. What message does it say to our players when they are getting dropped because of their birth certificate?

I think you're giving Weid far too little credit. He won't sook up because he's not getting a run at the moment. His time will come. It's a great position for the club to be in.

It's just unfortunate that he had the preseason injury or he'd be firmly in our best 22. He just has to keep performing in the VFL and his time will come and when it does I'm confident he'll grab the opportunity. Still early days, a long season ahead of us.

Not sure Gerard Healy is any more an expert on such things than you or I, either way I wouldn’t be putting any faith that Wied is the future down fwd for us. He is a nearly 24 year old in his 5th year of AFL football played under 50 games and only averaging just over a goal a game. Those aren’t the number of someone who is going to be a star. Hogan in the same time with the club played 71 games and kicked over 150 goals all despite battling multiple injuries and off field issues and he is considered a failure. I think people need some perspective on Wieds career he is a middle of the road player at best.

I think Sam is all class when he gets the ball in hand... I look at him and wonder about his urgency at the same time though.

If he is not a pressure forward, then what would be the metrics he needs to be hitting?

Last time I spoke to his dad (very late last year) this and his attack on contents were two areas his dad and the coaches were encouraging him to work on.

I don't think you can blame McDonald solely for his form in 2019 / 2020.  He had injuries, was clearly asked to bulk up to play a key position forward role he wasn't suited to and was asked to carry the forward line when the team was playing poorly.  I don't think Weid / Brown would have necessarily done much better.

TMac has always performed better when there are other tall targets in the forwardline and given his running capacity, I think having a mix of Brown / Weid / Jackson in the team will allow us to get the best out of him.

Was there a distinction made between his technique and tactical awareness on his attacks vs his desire for body contact (or lack thereof), which is more of a  default setting....

I like the lad, but against a deplorable team last night (without BBB) he should have kicked at least 8 goals and owned that forward 50. Frankly im not sure he will ever become the player we all had hoped for.

I just dont know how you can fit BBB, LJ, TMac and Weid into the one forward line. i like Kozzy, Spargs and Fritsch in there to mix it up so you'd have to leave them as-is.

Firstly, young players improve, particularly key forwards. I would argue that Weideman has delivered a similar output to Josh Kennedy (WCE) and Tom Hawkins at the same number of games.

Secondly, in 2020 he was 17th in the league for goals per game at 1.5. He is already much better than a middle of the road player.

I get your point SWYL however he's not playing as the deep forward to really do this.  He jagged 7 two weeks back then played high last week and a mixture of high and deep last night.  He took two grabs in close within range and gave them off and still kicked 4.4 under the roof which was a good result.

The challenge will remain for him playing in the gale forced winds at some of the VFL grounds, primarily at home.

Not sure if he will be a deep key forward back in the ones (if/when he gets back) as surely that will go to BBB.

I think a lot of people forget that he as a scrawny, weak 18 year kid with bung ankles (I think) when we picked him against Hogan who was a man child finishing a year in the VFL.  Comparing the two is irrelevant.

He showed a lot during the middle of last year but struggled again towards the end when our matches become scrums rather than the open footy that's going on this season.

I don't think he'll ever be a star but believe he is an above average forward and believe he will be a very good role player - similar to TMac with a similar ceiling.  Fortunately for us (and unfortunately for Sam) 2018 TMac has returned.

I'm not sure of the answer if we remain injury free but I do worry about losing a key forward who has another 8 years left at the top level who would get a game for 17 other teams right now if he remains in the twos.

Especially when in my thoughts, he had more of an impact on the first two VFL games of BBB.

We’re going to have injuries, form slumps, the need to rest players throughout the season. Weideman will get his chance and maybe with the added pressure he’ll become the player we all want to see.

Right now Tmac and LJ are set in concrete. BB and the Weid need to prove they can cut it at senior level. Brown gets his chance this weekend , the Weid will have to wait for someone to drop form or get injured.

There’ve been some silly comments on here, but that’s gotta be right up there. So it doesn’t matter if TMac has a dominant game and is in close to career best form, you drop him just because you think it’s inevitable that he falls apart soon. 

What if this year is some of the best footy he’s playing but dropping him kills his confidence?

TMac plays until he loses form (over two week period minimum) or gets injured, simple as that. I would look at “managing” Tom at some point, which will give Weid his chance to shine and should Sam perform well it becomes his spot to lose.

 Not really, was more a case of using his size to be confident in attacking the ball then following up that effort if the ball comes to ground
