I still think of 16 as Johnny Townsends number.

I wore that number 16 he was my favourite back in the 60s as a kid  proudly displaying the number on the back of my jumper wearing it to school. he was a fantastic rover and goal sneak. Won 2 Best and fairest   and one of them in 1964 our premiership year.

21 and 28 are open I wonder if anyone will move up? Bradtke? He's #46 now?

There's also a gap between Nev at 39, Lockhart at 41 and Smith at 44.

I wonder if there is a #50 locker for Ben Brown?

Terrific player was JT, but RDB collected the 1964 Bluey on his way out the door to the Brown Paper Baggers.

Is that the same Roy Park who played one test for Australia and was out for a golden duck?

Yes....from Demonwiki:  http://demonwiki.org/Roy+Park

"After his football career ended Park threw himself into a cricket career and earned a test call-up for Australia against England at the MCG during the 1920-21. He was dismissed for a golden duck in his first innings and urban legend has it that his wife dropped her knitting as he faced his first ball and therefore missed his entire test batting career. "

Hopefully BBB gets a big number and uses that as a minimum target for goals for him to kick in 2021.

I am becoming a sentimental old fool, but I like the numbers and think they are so much part of the history and culture of the game. Think Flower and Barassi and you think and visualise  number 2 & 31. They are mutually inclusive.

I think at one stage a few years ago there was a suggestion that the Commissariat was thinking of ditching the numbers and just use surnames ( no doubt also freeing up space for more advertising). If they ever did enact such an edict, it would really be time for a people’s revolution.

I think I am becoming less sentimental Ernest. Numbers have never been big for me. I would actually prefer names.

You have sold out OD. Very disappointed. Not like you. You have to keep some things sacred to stop the slow and invidious creep of commercialism and the second rate TV and media folk, advertisers and the AFL fat cats who will sell their mother down the road for a few dollars.  Increasingly, we have to choose our line in the sand to say no to the infidels. Those who are happy to trade away traditions for marketing reasons and money. OD, I know somewhere within your being is decency and your football soul. It’s there, just need to give it a shake and not lay down and be raped by the entertainers and money sharks.

In his era, a famous Melbourne boy, great cricketer, handy footballer, Doctor. Played sport in in the early part of last century. Attended Wesley College and Melb Uni. A renaissance man. Played test cricket (one test?) and VFL footballer (Uni?).

I think it was suggested names AND numbers, rather than instead of numbers.

I can imagine egocentric players like Dangerfield would looovvvve to see their names plastered all over the back of their jumpers. ?

Leave that to the Americans.

How much room does the AFL think there is on those jumpers?

Especially if your name is like a Kolodjashnij. It would be so small no one could see it properly from far away.

Just saw your post FD. Sorry, but those jumpers look a mess. I notice they show only short names.

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session.
