Farewell Josh Mahoney

I don't really like digging up old posts/threads (heaven knows I have posted some shockers over the years on this site!). But I really think Josh Mahoney deserves a bit more credit for the tireless work he did behind the scenes in getting guys like Lever, May, Langdon, Hibberd, etc. to the Club. These guys have been huge acquisitions for us and we really need to appreciate the part Mahoney played in those trade deals. Especially when the Norm Smith medal is hanging around Lever's neck at the end of September. Go Dees!

Agree - although with that particular poster he has form.  Wouldn't bother with anything be puts down

Some fair points, there.

I'm probably going to be on my own here, but I think the game has passed  Mark Williams by and I'm not sure he's the man to develop our young guys.

I'm really surprised by the overwhelmingly positive response both here and on social media to his appointment.

I'm no expert and would be stoked to be proven wrong but how many times have we seen older coaches move out of the elite level, come back and struggle to grasp what they need to be successful?

I think you have been proven wrong Cheesy D

Proven wrong and stoked is a better place to be than proven right and unhappy -Cheesy D ?

Absolutely. I don’t think Cheesey will mind too much!!

I think credit for getting players wanting to come to the mfc goes mainly to Simon Goodwin. Then Tim Lamb, and Kelly O'Donell in that order. When players arrive they invariably say it was the conversation with goody that got them most interested plus the fact we usually offer an extra year than most other clubs ... there are quotes out there from the players themselves if anyone wants to Google. l give Mahoney alot of the credit for the draft pick swaps that have been first rate

Mahoney always got too much credit and too much blame for decisions made by the people who’s job was talent evaluation. He was the spokesperson for trade week not the primary decision maker.

He didn’t get enough credit for his primary job which was to get contracts signed, keep the cap organised, support the coach, go out and hire people like Burgo.

Essendon look like they have a clear plan to rebuild and are supporting their coach with the right assistants and messaging. Mahoney’s influence is stability and organisation that Essendon haven’t had in a long time.

Yep. He's been a good acquisition, by all reports. Cheers for the bump?

Still with a shot for the AFL GM Football role, so potential a short stay at the bombers.

Josh’s role during the Roos era should never be underestimated in the success we’re currently having.

Good luck to him with the shot at the AFL GM role.

Even if he doesn't get the AFL job it may be a short stay at the Bombers...

Mahoney would be best qualified for the AFL job by a long way.

...but is he one of the boys?

Good luck Josh...

Unfortunately i agree completely, i'm sure Brad Scott is a very capable man, but Josh is an incredibly talented, and young administrator, with the potential to be a future CEO of the AFL, i think giving him this opportunity and investing in him would be very wise, because i think if you don't, talented people like that tend to start looking outside the sport for career advancement.

Would be great to have Josh as the AFL GM. Will at least have some sort of connection with the MFC. Does anybody know if was pushed out to have Richo take over his role or whether his exit was self-initiated?

Go on...

I have been quietly thankful to Josh Mahoney during the course of this wonderful season. He did a lot of hard yards in bygone years from which we are now reaping the benefits. Hope he gets the AFL gig. Seriously capable fella.

Just some rumours that another club is having a look at him. Emphasis on 'rumour' at this stage.

Having a look at him as head of footy or as CEO?

And I presume it's Carlton.

People have under played his role in all of this, he was super especially once PJ took him under his wing.

Unlucky Josh.

I thought that Josh pulled out because the job was watered down?

He made the right call whatever the reason.

AFL house is a jobs for the boys organisation.

Casting the net far and wide for the best possible candidate is a cliche well worn.

'@Mach5' what's the bet that Dillon is being set up to take over from Gill when he moves on...

...another casting of the net far and wide and somehow having the right guy in house.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The winds finally returned to Casey Fields for the Demons’ third home game of the VFL season, and its impact was immediate. After two opening rounds played in uncharacteristically fine conditions, the Anzac Day clash brought back the familiar gusty conditions that have been a feature of the region at this time of the year.
Forced to kick into the breeze first, the slow-starting Demons faced a tricky opening against an enthusiastic young Tigers outfit. Casey responded by turning the contest into a scramble, pressuring Richmond into errors and missed targets. The tactic proved crucial, keeping the game tight for three and a half quarters before the Demons pulled away with the autumn wind at their backs.

It seemed as if the whole purpose of the Anzac Eve clash at the MCG between the Demons and the Tigers was building toward that single, unforgettable moment when Kozzie Pickett soared above Campbell Gray and all but fittingly etched his name onto the face of the 2026 Frank ‘Checker’ Hughes Medal.
