2020 Player Reviews: #13 Clayton Oliver

The classy midfielder’s top 10 finish in the Brownlow Medal count was testament to his ability and hard work ethic in a season in which he was challenged to go more by foot than to use his quick hands to dispose of the football. Finished top 5 in the club's Best and Fairest.

Date of Birth: 22 July, 1997

Height: 187 cm

Weight: 85 kg

Games MFC 2020: 17

Career Total: 99

Goals MFC 2020: 3

Career Total: 29

Votes 2020 Keith 'Bluey' Truscott Memorial Trophy: 291 (Dick Taylor Memorial Trophy - 5th)

Votes 2020 Brownlow Medal: 14 (Equal 9th)

What do you say A gun! Needs to really hurt the opposition with better disposal. Love watching him play.

Disposal by hand 2nd to none. Id like to know if his higher kicking average this year has meant he got tackled more.

where are all those people that say he needed to be dropped etc? Comes top 10 in the brownlow and AA squad. Geez some people have no idea about football.

Another cracking year from Clayton, If I were the FD I would be getting him signed up for the foreseeable future, we cannot afford to lose any of our 5 Amigo's. Let's hope that Yze can tweak our midfield so that we can maximize their net impact.

Stay with us Clarry.!!!!!!

In the past I've been critical because he doesn't impact the scoreboard enough.  So I had a look at some of his 'heat maps' and he spends nearly all his his time in the middle or d50.  It made me wonder whether he does not have licence to go inside our fwd50 too often.

So the answer to my criticism of lack of score board impact could be the role he is asked to play.  Will keep a closer eye on this next year.

Given the rumours around him at EOS he and his role will be interesting to watch next year.

Clayton Oliver is our best player IMO he is durable  and runs all day and l love the way he takes the game on.  I am not worried about his kicking  like many others are as long he can win the ball.  However his kicking has improved  and his disposals are cleaner.

Oliver has upside and watchout  he will  only get better.      I just hope he sticks it out with the Dees for the remainder of his career.

It would be a hard job to complain about Oliver so I definetly won't. Gun player who we have to keep. All this carlton talk is really depressing.

Very, very good player, who has the ability to be a superstar if he gets his kicking right.

Signing him up on a long term deal in the very near future is an absolute must.

Not sure about the classy tag but no doubt he's a gun. What I would like to see from him in 2021 is him trusting himself more, similar to what Petracca did to take his next step. It's all well and good to be a team player and bring others into the game, but sometimes I'd prefer he just back himself to break the line and deliver the ball.

He's our best full time midfielder, despite the (deserved) praise here I think he has higher levels to go to. Tidy up disposal by foot, stop handballing like it's a hot potato, back himself to do things that others can't (he could be that sort of player), and he could be one of the best to don the Red and Blue.

If there is an opportunity to sign him to a 4-5 year contract we should take it.

If he'd run hard both ways consistently, we'd be a much better team. Not alone, of course.

Would love it if he could use his pace more, kick straighter and run harder defensively. But he's doing pretty well the way he is

He did the first one this season...  used it to break away from packs and get clear for the kick.  Was a nice evolution in his game.

He needs to kick goals. He really should be kicking 15-25 goals a season and resting forward, alternating with Petracca.

Thats Goodwins fault though, not Olivers.

It is indeed.

Don't write off Collingwood either. It seems they're building a war chest to land someone like Oliver.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
