Don't expect too many more changes to the list:ย

โ€œApart from Isaac, we are not targeting outside run specifically during this period...Weโ€™ll back in a number of players we have on our list currently, and give more opportunities to the likes of Oskar Baker, James Harmes, Jayden Hunt and Adam Tomlinson who can all play a similar type of role.โ€

โ€œWe see our greatest improvement coming from our current list of players, as they continue to develop their own games and roles by playing and training together.โ€

Josh may be joshing but he sounds fair dinkum.

But, who knows what will come out of the woodwork but I'm not betting on any more 'big' or even 'medium' fish.

ย

I don't buy any of it.

They're not 'specifically' going after a winger, but a winger is among our wants, I would say....

Edited by adonski

If were not trying to bring in a Phillips orย a Higgins type then we will be treading water for a third year in a row.

ย

ย

I'm hopingย he's trying to downplayย everything to try and keep the clubs off seasons business ''hush hush''ย  so he can have meetings with players without getting too much attention.

On the other hand if he thinks that just adding Brown to the club is enough for this off season, then I won't be very impressed. Another winger and an upgrade to one of our small forwards is a must.

I wonder whichย other ruck/forwards apart from McKernan they are looking at. Sam Hayes at Port?

Otherwise I hope we look very hard at cheap key defensive depth, a half backย and a half forward just to turn over the list.

But preserving draft capital has to be a factor too. Even if itโ€™s just 2nd and 3rd round picks we need to give JT a chance rather than spending on NQR types.

I'm tending to accept him at face value.ย

In part because he usually plays with a straight bat and in part all the recent re-signings of players (that many on here would happily delist) suggests not many existing players will be exited, unless it is contracted players ala Preuss, TMac.ย  Even then that only leaves a few list spots to add draftees or promote rookies eg Lockhart.

I hope Mahoney's not phoning it in for his last trade period with the club.ย

If we can't bring in outside pace because of poor list management then that is on him.

Yea mate heโ€™s just sitting back with his feet up on the desk whistling Dixie, throwing paper airplanes into the rubbish bin across the office.ย

ย

I'm more inclined to think we've landed our main target in Brown, we expected Smith, but he pulled the rug out from under us, so now we have to wait on other deals.

We have to rely on Preuss, the McDonalds, Vandenberg, ANB and maybe Nev finding new homes, and depending on what comes from those trades, we'll then have plan b, c and d in mind to move from there.

I think we'd like Phillips, I think we'd like a small forward and anything else that falls out from other teams this trade period we'll be open to at the right price.

It could be a really interesting trade period for us or a really uneventful one outside of Brown. It's the McDonalds andย Preuss will go too at a minimum.

So the club identified a need for outside run targeted Smith to fill that need, missed out and now think our current list will cover it?

We have to sort out TMac before anything else can be done.ย
we are also backing Darren Burgess to make our current list betterย

It all starts Tomorrow...

Blind faith.

Miss out on Smith, and then not even having a plan B because he chose not to come to us, even though he was a specific target with his outside run..ย

Cheers Mahns

We donโ€™t have the draft picks or the cash to be big players. Brown was cheap and a great get. After that weโ€™d have to offer players and our list is virtually untradeable, either needed or not worth anything

Baffling isn't it. We identified an issue, didn't land the player we targeted, so we'll bury our head in the sand and pretend the issue has disappeared. Brilliant stuff!

We will have Hannan, Preuss and probably Tmc to give us extra picks and should have bargaining power to get a Phillips and or Narkle into the club.ย
ย

Mahoney must have watched a different team in 2020. No more runners needed? ย Ffs ย

We fixed the wing on one side through getting Ed Langdon. ย โœ…
ย

We need another midfield runner for the other wing. You canโ€™t rely on Baker or Hunt. Phillips is going to be available and is a perfect fit.ย
ย

Maybe Mahoney already has one foot out the door.ย

I'm wondering if this means we have no serious takers for TMac or if we do it doesn't get us enough currency in Sal cap space or picks to do much with.

I'm guessing if we have a taker for him we will take the deal to reset our list and sal cap balance going fwd (to next year).

It also suggests we will keep our 2021 pics which is great as it is touted to be an excellent draft, unencumbered by too many Academy and F/S picks.

We identified a player who brings on and off field skills and had worked with our incoming midfield coach, thatโ€™s not the same as saying we desperately needed outside run.ย
ย

Improving coaching and team work will be the biggest improvements we can make. After that we need to add good players at the right price rather than paying up for short term additionsย

Why cant we rely on Baker? Showed a fair bit towards the end of this year. Hunt is a good option for the wing, so is Salem and Harmes. He did also say "specifically", i think if a good one comes up that fits with our strategies, we would grab that player. Treloar anyone?

ย

Okay, I'm going try and analyze everything Mahoney mentioned. And note, none of this is based on inside information, but rather what has been said here, on social media and by journalists.

Anyway, we targeted Isaac Smith as a free agent and Ben Brown (not a heavy price). We've managed to land Brown, but we failed in securing Smith.

This is where my analysis of the plan comes in. We want to move higher up the draft, this was/is hinging on only having to give up a small price for Brown and nothing for Smith. Because we failed in securing Smith, our chances of moving up in the draft are diminished if we have to give picks up for a player on the wing. We may have decided it was easier to get an early pick without giving up much, than use those picks on a player for the wing and have to use next years picks (which is considered a stronger draft than this one) on moving up in the draft this year.

It's just my thoughts, and I don't particularity agree with this approach if it is accurate, but I would prefer to get a winger than move up in the draft this year when we don't know how Covid has affected the talent pool.

Good post. The bolded bit feels pretty close to the mark.

The attraction of Smith was probably threefold: i) cheap ii) from a good culture iii) elite wingman. Now that he's slipped through the other options are not quite as good. Polec is arguably as good as Smith, but is expensive. Phillips is cheaper, but his kicking isn't as good as Polec or Smith.

Adding Phillips would still improve us, but the trade off has to be between holding our future first rounder and landing both Brown and Phillips with a second rounder, which seems fair for both. We might be able to get Phillips for a third rounder given the salary cap squeeze, but it depends whether a player goes back the other way.

I reckon they'll also have an eye on the long term as well, which means trying to get back into the first round this year if we like one or two players. Bringing in another young kid that is ready to go, but will grow with Jackson, Rivers and Pickett must be apart of our thinking. Certainly, it would be tempting to give Taylor another hit at a first rounder, otherwise our picks are speculative and will likely go on upgrades as @Lucifer's Heroย points out.

The other spectre is, as you say, the COVID-affected draft year.

I thought that we would spend the GWS trade pick in to acquire aย Tom Phillips. ie. Trade out surplus and look to immediately fix a known gap that improves the team for a push in 2021.

Maybe I have a view that we need to push ahead for the โ€œnowโ€ย or risk dropping down again as others like Bluesย and Freo push past us.ย

Why would we come out in the media and lay down our cards for getting players. Its doesnt make any sense. Trade period hasnt even started yet.

In saying that if we dont get anymore players (for wing etc) then JM is an [censored].

I'd rather giveย  current day Peter Matera a contract than go into 2021 relying on one of those four guys to be our other winger.

Could be another year of struggles on the MCG, which we absolutely cant afford.

The Demons return to Casey Fields (aka the Field of Dreams) this Saturday to host the Saints in Round 2. If youโ€™re feeling lucky, head down the Monash for some family-friendly footyโ€”you might even walk away a winner. The first 5,000 adults through the gate will receive an entry into the $10,000 helicopter ball drop. With Caseyโ€™s infamous wind, what could possibly go wrong? Closest ball to the pin wins. • PREVIEW: Collingwood

Way back in March we contemplated the possibility of a Demon resurgence after Simon Goodwinโ€™s summer of love.ย Manyย issues at the club had seemingly been addressed, key players were returning from injury and a brand new day was about to dawn. We imagined the coach pulling a rabbit out of a hat. The team would roar up the charts, push aside every opponent and make its way to a Grand Final ending in ultimate triumph with Goody and Max holding the premiership cup aloft under a shower of red and blue ticker tape.
