Hopefully Sam is getting some help from the football department and family and friends to get through this awful situation.🙏💕

Watching MitchLewis v Pies yesterday, couldn’t happen but think about how important desire and a positive attitude are.  His intensity and drive to win the footy was great to see.  Unfortunately polls apart to Sam. Sam is a great young man.  I’ve met Sam on several occasions. He’s friendly and well educated well spoken.  Love to see your daughter bring him home as her partner. But he lacks a true competitor warrior type attitude.   Watching him in the VFL on the weekend and couldn’t help but think he’s not going to make it.  His aggression and intensity isn’t natural.

I think Goodwin's presser was very pointed - Sam is being asked to put his "big boy pants" on or there isn't a spot for him in the team

Talent alone just doesn't get results at AFL level - earlier in the year Goodwin gave Sam credit for his performances (which at the time I thought was overly generous) however my sense is Goodwin now feels that he has been let down by Sam's lack of physicality - we have said it many times before but unfortunately time may have run out for Sam to make it

I don't know about bringing in Weid he's had too many chances. Should we go smaller.

HF: Neal-Bullen, Jackson, Pickett

F: Spargo, M.Brown, Fritsch

Bedford on the pine.

Sam will NEVER get a better opportunity, he has to work for it but he should be now seeing this as his chance to not only force his way in but become our focal point.

Its been nearly four years and 3 seasons since the 2018 finals series Pates.

How many chances has he had since then i wonder?

The Weed will be ok, plenty of big guys develop late, we need to back him in, give Sam a block of 6 games, don’t just cut him adrift after one average showing.

I totally agree he has been given chance after chance, but this opportunity may come as a result of another player being out for the rest of the season, much in the same way Petty got his sustained go following Tomlinson going down. I think part of the issue for him has been that he feels so under pressure to perform immediately because he knows someone else will be ready soon enough that he gets down on himself at the first hint of something going wrong.

Yes the the Essendon game was against a relatively poor defence but he still had to perform and kick the goals, and he did! So the ability is bloody well there. I think for this coming week we will stick with the Brown/Brown combo, but this is Sam's genuine chance to force his way in and stay in.

Can't argue with much of that Pates.  My only POD would be that Benny should feel super fortunate if he gets a game this week after his last four results!  The invisible man!

I have nothing against any of them and hope they all succeed.  I just want ONE of our KTFs to stand up and get a riggle on (not including Macca in any of this of course).

I don't really know if there's a point trading him for a 3rd or 4th rounder at this point. Try to turn him into a defender at VFL level for depth if nothing else.

Another block of games ... no thanks ... he plays when in form or he gets dropped ...he's been in the system long enough. Goodies comments at the presser is pure frustration that he doesn't will himself into contests and have any physical presence ... the smalls rely on aerial contests ... wouldnt surprise me to see majak play this week

If that happens I am glad I am in QLD and can basically ignore AFL .

The only hope for me would be to play him at CHB which l think he could do and perhaps release Petty to play up forward

Your grasping at straws D1858.

Matt Taberner is an interesting comparison. Is 28 and is averaging 2.3 goals this season, much better than any of his previous years.

He also showed glimpses of quality at times and similarly frustrated Freo supports by his lack of consistency.

Another theory I have regarding his form is what is being asked of him? Is he being asked to play like TMac or Brown? Is he being given different sets of instructions? Are the coaches trying to simplify it to “affect X amount of contests and aim for a getting 2-3 looks at goals for one a game”. Maybe I’m grasping at straws but I just wonder if there’s a way we can get through to him that we aren’t trying.

  • REPORT: Brisbane

“Max Gawn has been the heart and soul of the Dees for years now, but this recent recovery from a terrible start has been driven by him. He was everywhere again, and with the game in the balance, he took several key marks to keep the ball in the Dees forward half.” - The Monday Knee Jerk Reaction: Round Ten Of course, it wasn’t the efforts of one man that caused this monumental upset, but rather the work of the coach and his assistants and the other 22 players who took the ground, notably the likes of Jake Melksham, Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver and Kozzie Pickett but Max has been magnificent in taking ownership of his team and its welfare under the fire of a calamitous 0-5 start to the season. On Sunday, he provided the leadership that was needed to face up to the reigning premier and top of the ladder Brisbane Lions on their home turf and to prevail after a slow start, during which the hosts led by as much as 24 points in the second quarter. Titus O’Reily is normally comedic in his descriptions of the football but this time, he was being deadly serious. The Demons have come from a long way back and, although they still sit in the bottom third of the AFL pack, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel as they look to drive home the momentum inspired in the past four or five weeks by Max the Magnificent who was under such great pressure in those dark, early days of the season.

  • CASEY: Southport

The Southport Sharks came to Casey. They saw and they conquered a team with 16 AFL-listed players who, for the most part, wasted their time on the ground and failed to earn their keep. For the first half, the Sharks were kept in the game by the Demons’ poor use of the football, it’s disposal getting worse the closer the team got to its own goal and moreover, it got worse as the game progressed. Make no mistake, Casey was far and away the better team in the first half, it was winning the ruck duels through Tom Campbell’s solid performance but it was the scoreboard that told the story.

  • PREGAME: Sydney

Just a game and percentage outside the Top 8, the Demons return to Melbourne to face the Sydney Swans at the MCG, with a golden opportunity to build on the momentum from toppling the reigning premiers on their own turf. Who comes in, and who makes way?
