Just saw this. I’m suspect on that 3 year part.

Surely if there is 2 years remaining on his contract he can’t just leave without breaching his contract.

Interesting if there is a 3 year clause given that the money in Europe if someone offered him a deal would be much higher.

FWIW I suspect anyone if they wanted to could have walked away from an AFL contract in 2020 as the requirement to work in an interstate hub was outside the terms of the contract.

For 2021 it could be different. Of course contracts for personal services are rarely enforced other than toplace the departee on gardening leave. That might not be good for MFC as we could have to pay both him and his replacement.

Might be able to sue the Crows for inducing a breach of contract but who knows.

The recent situation with Messi and Barcelona is fascinating.

I'm also circumspect on the 3 years.

In the article on club website, by Ben Gibson it says:  "Melbourne has secured the services of Darren Burgess for season 2020" and he repeats it in the body of the article.  That looks like one year to me.

He has broken contracts before; he left Port early to join Arsenal.

Isn't Burgess originally from rom SA?  Could be just a fishing expedition by Adelaide; has there been any other report/confirmation of Crows' interest?

I believe he and his family think of SA as 'home'. It's where his family are heading now for the break, hopefully not any longer.

Kane cornes rates him less highly than others in the league. Andrew russell at the blues for example.

Not a wrist slashing event possibly?

Interesting. That said Cornes is not the most trustworthy commentator.

I’m not saying that.

OP mentions report that Adelaide are into him. Initial signing reports only mention 2020. Tom Morris report today mentions contacted to Dees for 3 years. Something isn’t adding up.

And why is this the first we've heard of it? Maybe someone from the club feeding Morris BS to make him look stupid? He doesn't have a good relationship with us from memory

Hopefully Rucci is just doing his usual muckraking for the Crows.

Here's a similar story from 2012 that didn't eventuate:

Adelaide Crows move to steal fitness coach Darren Burgess from under Port Adelaide's nose

His kids are in Adelaide with his ex wife so I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t go to Adelaide

He does go to Adelaide to see his kids when he can. Lockdown is not helping now.

However he certainly doesn't have any intentions to see his ex wife. That could be worse than Covid 19..

Love Burgo, but tbh he has seemed to flip flop a little bit. We nearly lost him to a European soccer team after signing him, and as recent as 6-8 weeks ago he seemed very very likely to stay but is now almost certainly gone.

In fairness, this time around it's not purely a financial decision apparently.

Big loss, but feels like the club has a new sense of how important this role is and will chase top quality.

Thanks.  Thought these comments were interesting:

"...Unless you can somehow get Melbourne to release him and Adelaide to pay him really good money I don’t think it would happen, but hey, stranger things have happened in sport...I did hear a whisper that he’s managed by Rob Snowdon who also manages one Crows coach… he’d be a good get".

And:

“Melbourne won a bidding war to get Alan Richardson and he was on very good coin, so when you take 30 per cent off the soft cap you wonder whether that might need to be massaged.”

Would much rather lose Richardson than Burgess.

I really hope the club makes decisions on who is the best person for a position rather than who is under contract that we need to 'find a job for'.

The AFL has given clubs the chance to pay out FD contracts with no impact on soft cap.  I hope the club takes that opportunity to create a top 4 FD team.

I am wondering if this is why there are rumpurs of Mahoney out, Richardson into GM Football. But concerned that Richardson might not actually be the right guy for that role.

Richardson would have a more broader knowledge of the roIe due to what he has seen and experienced with other clubs eg. Pies, Port, St.K and Dees.

I would like to see this come to fruition as it would rid us of the last piece of Administration that has lurked around the club for far too long.

There will probably be a thread about that.

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
