I’ve read this and that is what started the rumour of Cripps returning to WA. Someone on BF posted that they‘d heard a rumour about a player from a big Victorian club wanting to return to WA. Someone then posted that article and someone else then stated that the player must be Cripps due to that article. It’s where the rumour originated.

The Fremantle board then caught wind of the rumour then they started joking about having Fyfe and Cripps and how they’re going to win next years Grand Final. Come on here a day later and Cripps is going to Fremantle and Oliver is going to Carlton to replace him.

Thanks Pickett!! You’ve put us all at ease putting that to bed.

He’s our best player period and would be the last player on our list to trade.

So if he’s not happy the club needs to make him happy

Oliver unhappy etc is a total silly season beat-up. Move on.

It's the silly season.  There are rumours about most players these days, most of which turn out to be garbage.

I have no doubt players think about their future on a regular basis - Viney even said in an article today that he did seriously consider the Geelong offer, and even got his blessing from his old man if he chose to have a fresh start - but ultimately turned it down.

I have no doubt clubs enquire regularly about a variety of players, but it doesn't mean clubs will trade them or that the players are interested in moving on.

Unless I've missed something, it seems Oliver wants out based on his B&F finish, some problem with the medicos (which seems laughable considering how fit the players seemed and that we got through the season with the smallest amount of injurie sin years) and some throwaway comment on Footy Classified.

It doesn't make much sense to me, and I while I can understand frustrations about how the season finished, we aren't a bottom four side.  I just can't really take it seriously at this point.

I am with you there wiseblood, too many people just believe every bit of garbage that is thrown around. No wonder con artists and scammers do so well.

FWIW, based on that article that's been syndicated across a number of other mast heads the Cripps rumour might have legs (though whether it happens this year or next, if at all is yet to be seen) - although with Carlton making a play for De Goey, it seems they seem to have a large amount of room in their TPP to accomodate Williams, Saad and an even bigger fish.

I also accept according to some reputable posters that Oliver might not be happy ATM, but I agree with you 100% the two aren't linked.   There's no way anyone at the club would even entertain a conversation about trading Clarrie.-

I get the worry from supporters when stuff like this comes up - their own frustration with the club is almost manifested through one of our better players, and the worry begins.

We have people here packing themselves over players potentially moving on at the end of their contracts, but the club has been good at having players re-sign over the past 5 years or so, and we aren't really hearing concrete, believable reasons for players wanting to move on at this stage.

Agree.

I think some on here are getting confused with the Oliver talk. No one is saying that we will trade Oliver. That's not what concerns me at all, because let's be realistic, he's contracted and even if he actually requested a trade, I'm sorry but that club can cough up 2 first rounders as a starting point.

I think the concern is that Oliver is unhappy at the club and fair to say that if we are in this position this time next year then yes he'll have every right to demand a trade. We as a club need to do everything in their power in getting it right next year to show guys like Petracca and Oliver that we are moving in the right direction.

Right at this stage, the direction of the club is up in the air.

If this is the case, and I'm not necessarily denying that it is, then I'd love to know why.

He is played in his preferred position week in, week out.

He is on good money which will only get better, you would imagine, when his next contract comes up.

He's said before that he doesn't like change and, from what we can gather, he enjoys playing under Goodwin.

So what is it?  Okay, we missed finals for the second year in a row, but we're not a bottom four club going nowhere.  And he isn't 28-29 and looking for that elusive premiership before his time is up.

I'll fully accept that he might be frustrated at present, as we all know how competitive he is, but I can't accept that he would be unhappy and pushing for the chance to be traded.

I don't think anyone is saying that Oliver will leave this year ET. He's contracted for another year.

But, he's clearly disgruntled and not happy within the club. What that reason be, who knows? I'm not in the belief that its over a stupid BnF placing ( though its an utter joke Viney finished higher then him). I just think he's not happy due to the lack of success of the club and he's getting impatient.

What's even more concerning is that @Chook in Perth has confirmed that this is clearly the case right now that we have one of the best players this club has seen come through our doors, is not happy.

If we have another year of missing finals then I would not be surprised if he requests a trade.

By that last paragraph, either the present coach gets us well into  finals next year, or Clarry and the coach goes. I find that rather self defeating. Some people need to pull their finger out maybe sooner.

This is true, However, any other club would be putting time in to assess how big an offer it would take to lure him away! There would be clubs out there I'm sure that would offer him around $850 -$ 900 Grand or more per year for 5 years. Now if that is the case can you see MFC being able to match that??

Sentiment doesn't control Carlton, ask Silvagni

It could easily be a range of things we aren't privy too behind closed doors. Could be a personal matter that wasn't handle in the right matter, who knows. Its easy to speculate from what we see on the telly, but hub like has brought out the best and worst of clubs.

But its been confirmed by @Chook in Perththat he's not happy which to me says enough to know that its legit.

Also wise, while we are not a bottom 4 side, we have underperformed as a club with the talent on the list and we've been mediocre. The club had the aim at the start of the year to play finals and we failed... again. Can't sugar coat this anymore. Players and supporters are now getting incredibly restless.

What do you mean by any other club, or as that wallowing in MFCSS.

IMO we are not poorly managed and haven't been for a long time off field. Don't think for a minute with Viney is locked away the club aren't looking at renegotiating Olivers contract and probably have been for a while.

I'm not sure I would be paying Oliver $900 over 5 years on current output, I love him but for that coin you want greater impact on the scoreboard. The club need to sit him down and state that to him, because he's not yet reached his peak and needs to have a Trac like impact (which he has the potential to have) from next season onwards. Those figures won't be that high for a player who has the potential he has

Still can't see anywhere in the article where she says she wants to go back to Perth.

The article appears to be about highlighting her condition and how she's learnt to deal with the curveballs Covid and Cripps being in the Hub have thrown her way

How about 1 finals series in their careers to date? Guys like Petracca and Oliver are made for September and if they see MFC failing again and again you can understand the second guessing. They don't want to wind up like Jones who has given everything for the club, turned his back on potential money and success elsewhere, played in only 5 finals games and is now close to being turfed out by the club because they think he's done. That's not to say the club shouldn't move on from Jones but you could understand some players thinking "that's where loyalty gets you".

I would understand him being frustrated by missing finals, but let's be honest - it's not as if he is 28-29 years old and in the Nathan Jones category just yet.

I'm just not buying it, Doc.

If we don't make the finals in 2021 or 2022 then yes, you could understand the impatience and potential willingness to move on.  But not yet.

How did the information get out and circulated about that Oliver had been asked to increase his standing start from the contest pace? In my opinion that should be completely in house....

He doesn't have to wait until his 28 -29 Wise, this is where you're missing the point. I'd laugh at the rumour too if we had been playing finals since 2018 and showing that we are on the up each year,  but we're not. And his 5 years at the club he's played finals once. He'll be 24 year knowing he's wasted first half of his career with limited success.

There's enough smoke now to say that he's clearly not happy at the club. As i have already said, what that reason being is who knows? There could be other elements that perhaps we are not privy too.

100% this

and i absolutely guarantee he's not the only required player feeling this way. if we don't, not only make finals, but comfortably make finals and push hard in them in 2021. we could be in the same situation Essendon are right now.

What is there to surprise. players come in a draft lottery. Play for teams they did not support. Need to understand an sign contracts from a young age. meet a new set of mates at 18. A few years later the media calls those new mates, best mates as if they have bonded all their lives. A contract term runs out. You can stay with the Club that drafted you or choose to go to another Club that is wanting you. It is business. Many players who stay and are called loyal are just staying because the contract terms are better than they can get elsewhere. This is fact when you consider all Clubs pay basically the same player payments and yet the top clubs share the same pool as the poor performers.

Sorry mate, but with you and others, I'll agree to disagree. I'm just not buying it right now. None of the rumours stack up for me.

Again, if we fail to play finals over the next few seasons then we don't have a leg to stand on.

Cheers.

The next stage of our journey needs to be player driven. It felt like May took On the challenge to be a leader this year, and I think Gawn, Viney and Lever can continue to build here.

it is then up to the likes of Oliver, Petracca etc to take on the onus of leading this team as well. I think petracca took ownership of his own game this year and perhaps now can widen his focus to drive the team. Oliver took steps with his own game during the year (more run etc)

bottom line for me, is if these sorts of guys want to take the easy option to go somewhere else rather than take on the challenge to drive this group to a flag, and we can’t persuade them that they can get us to this level, we should be letting them go for the players and personalities who do have this commitment.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
