Smith is coming to Melbourne, just like Brown.

This sure is polarising given your dislike for "speculation".

My opinion is he's having a hard time officially telling the Hawks. they know, because they aren't stupid, but actually telling a club you've been at for a long period of time, and had a lot of success with is a big deal.

I don't think we officially confirmed Tomlinson until the start of free agency last year even though it was well known. That's the best way to do it. All these other free agents picking out clubs (some restricted) get a wave of publicity for the media but the club gets nothing.

Wait until the official start on Friday, put him in a club polo on the club website and get all the clicks for us and our sponsors.

I couldn't care less about his kicking when under pressure. Its his inexplicable shanks when no one is on him (even when he has a free) that grinds my gears.

Anyway, sorry, I've derailed this thread enough.

Back to Smith. Good kick!

Smith isnt a good kick. his right leg collapses when he kicks on the run and he kicks a kot of helicopters. he can kick it a decent distance but doesn't have much finesse. i understand why we're chasing Smith because we're slow but with Goodwin coaching we're not in the premiership window. So getting Smith is wasted, even though i dont rate him anyway. Higgins is twice the player.

The way I see it is we tend to keep free agency information on the down low, instead waiting until the period has begun to simply sign the free agents over and announce that the player has joined the club. I don't remember in recent memory of any player announcing they were going to sign with us via free agency before the signing period began.

The only time where a player has announced their intention to join us beforehand has been when we've had to facilitate a trade.

This may be why nothing has been announced yet and may not be announced until Friday.

Over 200 games, 3 flags in a golden era for the Hawks and you don’t rate him?

You may prefer Higgins but he is not twice the player.

I can understand that Higgins has more long term value due to age and games played but is he what we need in 2021?

My main concern is that Smith is at the end of his career and is playing for his pay cheque rather than his future. He has nothing to prove and already has 3 flags under his belt. Hard to imagine him retaining the hunger to maintain form and fitness. He may play a role but will it be enough to make a significant difference?

Another lifestyle move?  Don’t these guys know that it’s only a 10 minute drive to the Collingwood children’s farm from AAMI park?

or a 5 min drive to an actually working farm at Casey Fields.

the only difference between smith and phillips/polec is flags, and that doesn't say anything really about the player coz realistically and i know its not completely the case but they could carry anyone to a flag during those years such was the dominance so why would we not target someone younger and hungrier than just the paycheck signing.

From memory, Smith performed well in their flag wins but your last comment is the issue. All things being equal, a younger player with more to prove makes more sense..

Then it makes less sense for Geelong, and no sense for anyone else.  Suspect we are looking for a role player to assist the team, rather than unearthing the next Dusty or Trac with this pick.  He has plenty to prove - that he is up to AFL Standard and worth more than hawks were valuing him at.

Polec has the most upside but he''ll cost either a decent draft pick or a lot of cash, plus he might not fit the culture. Where if Smith is the right player for us he could enhance the culture - we need to assess his leadership credentials thoroughly and not just assume it of course.

Phillips is another where draft pick and pay cheque come in to play. That might not matter if we're planning on getting 5 years out of him but I have a sneaky suspicion the AFL might've seen the best of Tom Phillips. There's also the matter of whether the Pies want to actually give him up. Phillips only has 1 more year on his expensive contract, if they push out Treloar they could look to keep him on a better deal after 2021.

There's certainly pros and cons and I can talk myself in to any of them but the most important thing is getting someone that can do the role and does what they are bought in to do. If Smith is bought in to do the job for 2 years whilst we draft or develop a long term replacement then that's job done.

Agree on Smith's kicking, but our defensive system held up for most of the year and Smith providing run to get back to support and options on the way out that should only get stronger.

It will be up to Yze to get some class around the midfield and find targets going inside 50 more often. If Smith sticks to what he's good at - running 30 and bombing it 60 - he won't have to nail too many hit up kicks.

I assume you mean Shaun Higgins? He'd be great and we should absolute be investigating him. What would it cost to get him when Geelong want him though?

As long as we get one winger I’ll be happy.

Smith , Polec, or Phillips.

Would make sense why all is quiet from Smiths end. You would think if he had made his mind up it would be announced.

Could also be that he is double checking which deal suits him better and comparing us to the cats.

Yep, reckon he's bound for kardinia Park.

Gut feel and nothing else, yes.

Issac Smith will be a demon in 2021.

I don't know 100% what the delay is about, but the dees do tend to wait for the window to make things public.

I suspect before Sunday Issac will be rolled out in a red and blue polo.

Smith is getting on and we should not be a retirement fund for geriatrics. I also think he is on the way down.

There are others out there. Philips comes to mind.

Gee whizz Evil, not doubting you or your intel, but don't you want to perhaps cut yourself some slack in the chance that perhaps he may have changed his mind, or been swayed elsewhere? I admire and respect your willingness to stay the course, but maybe, just maybe things have changed?

Hahaha i'm confident mate, i trust my sources for the information i post on here and the only thing that has changed is the way a couple of journo's are reading the delay. it's their job to appear ahead of the news and provide content, i get it.

I am 100% confident Issac Smith is coming to the demons and the delay in announcing has nothing to do with the cats. it's not even really a delay. but lets call it that haha.

Yes, I almost bumped the Tom Philips thread earlier to see if anyones heard any whispers.

Would be a great pickup, and wouldn't cost much.

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
