Freo played with good system. We played with none. They made zero changes we made 7.

We are spent. The season is a joke. Living in hubs, 4 days breaks, Dees travelling every game and playing on tier 2 grounds. The boys have had enough. They will look forward to getting back to their own beds.

Be interesting to see our off field moves heading into 2021. List needs some tinkering and just wonder if we will trade out someone unexpected. We need to change our mix. I am going to back Goody in.

@AmDamDemon. Beer soon. Borders have been a little bit bit more important than footy this year. Not much though.

It's 15h and I can't believe I haven't started drinking. Hope you're well mate, and the tinder prospects know how to run and tackle

Champion. You would have been shouted to multiple drinks by now if I was in residence.

I laughed at it in the GameDay thread but that is a diabolical stat. Truly diabolical. They showed the pressure ratings across the comp on On The Couch and we are 3rd last for the year. So we're not winning uncontested footy and we're not bringing the pressure what are we doing? Win the scrum hack it forward rinse repeat.

Guarding grass or ambling along 25m behind play. Was a lot of that tonight. Lazy as

Awww diddums.

This is up there with the quote after round 1 that the players played poorly because they might have been "worried about how they were going to get home." That was truly posted.

FFS these are professional footballers

Preuss and Gawn in those conditions? Baker? Smith? Man. We carry way too many NQR players for a team that thinks they're in finals contention. How is it that Rivers in his first handful of games has more poise than our leaders? I'll tell you why it is because he hasn't been at this club long enough for it to zap any natural talent out of him.

We look so directionless with the ball in our possession. Coach has completely lost the players. So gutted as a supporter

Yep, I believe I will do this as well

I just sent them an email telling them to take me off auto-renew and explaining why. Hopefully the message gets through, I've never been compelled to do that before but the last 2 games is the last straw. I want them to know what the financial risk is of keeping Goodwin, Mahoney et al if they are worried about the financial risk of sacking them.

Also done. Enough is enough.

Can we just default the two final games and be done with it?

Looking at the way we've gone about our last two games, it actually looks like Goodwin has lost the players.

I dont think he has had them since the prelim. it looked like they lost faith in the gameplan after that, but he doubled down on it, last year and this year. you reap what you sew i suppose. all other changes "have" been made, only the game plan remains

Not with this line-up.

And it's not just me "underselling" the players, look at Garry Lyon's comments tonight re "ordinary players".

Perhaps the whole team can break out of the quarantine hub, live it up at Surfer's for one last hurrah and be sent back to Melbourne in disgrace. Save us a lot of heartburn.

We've been turning the list over for 7 years now. If it's an ordinary list whose fault is that? Yeah we have a bunch of ordinary players on the list between the 30th-40th player, a lot of clubs do. That doesn't mean that we shouldn't expect to be in the top half of the competition 7 years into a rebuild and 4 years into Goodwin's coaching career. I don't care about skill I care about structure, gameplan and effort and the last 2 games there has been little of any of that. That is purely on the coaches.

Ffs Goodwin was outcoached tonight by a rookie. Freo played to a plan and held their structure. We just kept going down the line to packs, playing the boundary line etc, it was Neeld footy

I think it's pretty clear he changed the game plan from an 18 man aggressive press to a different style, but whatever. I think the players have brought a horrible inconsistency to this year, but I have to admit, the system is completely out of whack, when you can have 6 or 7 players regularly not registering a tackle and that's even if we're winning.

It's not throw the baby out with the bath water time IMO, but we need to sort out some areas.

FORWARDLINE

We need to really look at our forwardline over the off season. We need to get genuine goal kickers in there. It's not going to do, to simply have pace, or have pressure. We actually need goal kickers to keep the scoreboard ticking. Weideman is a tick for this year, but has faded in the last two games when there hasn't been an adequate foil for him. So Jackson or Petty needs to play.

MIDFIELD

We need to examine the dynamics in midfield. I've said it before, I wouldn't be against letting Viney walk as a FA, but we won't. So get him forward or get him playing differently in midfield. We need to get Harmes in there too, it's ridiculous. And I think Angus needs to be in there as well. I don't know what to do with Max. He's clearly carrying something, but he's been terrible since he's been back. I'd even consider trading him (I'll wait for the backlash on that one). Need to work hard on those stoppage set ups and the way we move the ball from midfield to attack.

BACKLINE

The backline needs to shed Oscar McDonald and Joel Smith, but otherwise I think we've got a really solid group to work with back there. It's the one area of the ground I'm comfortable with. May, Lever, Salem, Rivers, Hibberd, Lockhart, Petty and Tomlinson. I'd have all those guys in my team.

And by the way the only players who played against the Hawks and Eagles in 2018 finals no longer on the list are Jordan Lewis, Sam Frost and Dom Tyson. You're telling me they're the difference between prelim finalists and 10th-12th? Absolute rubbish.

It's nice to know that in a compromised season that is affecting every single team it's the Melbourne Footy Club that gets to throw in the towel first because it's all too much. I wouldn't have expected it any other way to be frank. Makes perfect sense and shows just why we're in the shape we're in. When the pressure is on, we go to water. Been happening for years and won't change. Only the strongest survive.

I've had it with this team. Just a bunch of pathetic dumb footballers who have no idea how to perform the basic fundamentals of the game. I want to see sackings after this. Mahoney has done his dash and a lot of questions need to be asked. And no I don't want to hear about some fool's fishing trip, you are on a Melbourne forum show some sensitivity.

I said when the season was first compromised due to COVID that the teams with the strongest character and resilience will do well and they were traits we lacked.

Not out there tonight, and players who were a big part of our 2018 success: Tom Mac, Jetta, Jones. Also, don't underestimate the loss of Lewis. That's a lot of experience/talent that has not been replaced.

“You look at (Joel) Smith and (Braydon) Preuss and (Toby) Bedford and (Alex) Neal-Bullen and (Oskar) Baker – they’re just average players in, what now has to be seen to be, an average footy club. And the ladder suggests that.”

Spot on

Lists better now then it was in 18’, even considering T Macs downfall

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
