I posted something similar last week, and it's still true after a win - not getting enough out of the smaller forwards. Spargo, Hannan, VDB and Pickett, not a goal between them and only 1 goal assist. Not many possessions either.

And barely a stuck tackle between them

Jakey Lever and Ed Langdon not getting enough love. Both won some huge critical one on ones.

Lingers is a beauty!

And a big thanks to fox footy or whoever was responsible for the lack of cameras to deem Tracs last goal a point.

That was so clearly a goal. The goal umpire saw it and I saw it from my lounge room ?It was only the field umpire wanting to get his face on TV. Perhaps his family was watching. Had to prove he wasn't entirely useless.

Someone mentioned it earlier, but how did the umpire justify calling play on for the Brown kick that clearly went at least 25 metres in those last 30 seconds?

I've seen kicks go 8 metres and get paid.

Sorry but l see we just barely beat stkilda. Not a team that l would call a serious threat. Yes they are in the top eight but this is a year where when and who you play really matters. The saints still have to face some top teams, we don’t. The saints out scored us over the final three quarters, their poor shooting for goal was the difference. We need to do a lot better if we are going to play finals football.

We just can't win, can we.

FWIW, I don't agree.

It made me nervous though.

Just thinking out loud...will we have to win the next 3 given easy games coming up 4 pies...dogs and giants?

Nice spoil from Omac

Best strategic use of the shoulder spoil I've seen all year.

No way that wasnt a goal to Trac.......Ratten alluding it was touched

Langdon keeps us in games as much as May.. his pressure and ground coverage is exceptional

This is the Viney footage (apparently he's not visible in the team song either):

I similarly ran into the bathroom straight after that win..... I’m sure for the same reason.

It was touched.. past the goal line.

His work rate is through the roof. His efforts to help out our defender but to thrn be an extra option up field is phenomenal work rate.

.....you could tell by the crowd reaction i reckon..

Big shout out to Wagner. Thought he did a very serviceable job, given it was first game in a while. Plaued hos role very well. Keeps his spot for sure. Harmes has his work cut out to get back in!

I've read a lot of posts now saying how good the backline was, and yes, they were brilliant, but we play 18 man defence FFS. It was a team effort. We had stand out performances in May, Petracca and arguably Langdon too, but the team defended the ground and prevented constant slingshot most of the night.

I dunno what everybody is going on about Viney for...

I couldn't even make it to the end of the game without having to go ?

I think we can give Richardson a fair amount of that credit!

It was totally all Richo. Goodwin was trying to be seen doing something on the bench. But every shot on tv he was doing nothing. Compare that with Ratten. Miles apart. Miles..

I reckon there’s a better performer than May and Trac tonight. Check out Stafford belting out the song in the background, classic stuff.

Maybe he ate Viney in the “buffet room” and was doubly pumped?

Re Viney you could see when they were heading off that he was pretty keen to get back to the rooms and just before they formed the circle he ducked though the door behind them.

Obvious [censored] break

vandenBerg, Hannan, Jones and Pickett laid 3 tackles between them.

I love vandenBerg's intent but if he's not tackling, I'm just not sure why he's playing.

I'd like to see the pressure act stat (does anyone know if it's available anywhere), as I'm sure the FD look at it, and it might be what keeps Pickett in the side.

I thought his selection was a strange one, but happy to eat a little humble pie.  Did his job very well tonight.  Certainly holds his spot for the short term.

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
