I have no confidence at all.

That worries me slightly, titan.  You always strike me as someone who can find the positives in there somewhere, no matter how bad we're tracking!

There's a moment in the film "When we were Kings" during the fight where Ali has thrown a series of unexpected punches at Foreman, hoping to knock him out in the first round. But instead it just enrages Foreman who proceeds to pound Ali, and Ali realises all his fears were well founded and that any victory that nigh will require a high physical price that he's not sure he will be able to pay... Its a great moment in the fight and movie.

I think MFC supporters come into seasons hoping we've a great and dominant team, and then realise (often several times) over the season that victory will require a great price emotionally. Last week we paid, we may again tonight.

But one day, if we persist, we will experience the victories we seek, like Ali did.

Go Demons.

In theory, we can win this. That theory is that our midfield gets on top, our forwards make the most of St Kilda's relatively poor backline, and our zone returns to what it was prior to last week.

If we can get the game played in our forward half and we ramp up the brutality around the contest, we can win.

But reality suggests we'll either lose in the middle, or turn it over in our forward line, and watch them burst away from our turnovers with pace that we cannot match, with an open forward line (because we'll be pushing up the ground) and goals out the back left right and centre.

I think that's what gets me the most. Not necessarily the sinking feeling that we'll lose, but the feeling that I can predict precisely how this game is going to play out.

PS: our season doesn't end with a loss (unless we shed too much percentage). A final four of Sydney, Fremantle, GWS and Essendon presents us with a solid chance to go 3-1 and get us to 9 wins at worst. IMO, our season is set up beautifully with a win, but we're not done with a loss.

There's no G'tee we'll beat GWS or the Bombers if they get a bit of a roll going now that Joe's back.

Personally i think any chance of a finals appearance hangs on tonight's result.

Yeah I have MFCITIS HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS NO KNOWN CURE!

There absolutely is a cure, and its called a premiership.  So yeah you're screwed basically as are many of us.

We could play Trac fwd 80% and Gus in the middle.

We will win this in style!  We will then proceed to lose the next two matches in a very ugly fashion!  Praying for a 4 quarter effort from EVERY player.  The distance between our best and our worst football is staggering, who knows what to expect!?

Go you erratic Demons! Wagner to surprise today and kick 2 or 3 goals and set up others.

I wonder if theres any truth to the rumour Wagner will play forward?  He kicked a couple of nice ones here....  who doesn't love a left footer loading up from around 50.

Hope Trac is switched on today.

All of them for that matter. We will know if we will be watching Dees play footy again this year by the end of the day.

The Dogs showed how we struggle against genuine legspeed, and our team today is even slower than last week.

Our ins are genuinely eyebrow-raising.

Im confounded as to the thinking behind selection and I think we'll get pumped tbh.

???

Get pumped? Oh boy love the optimism!!!

changes are clear - we’ve gone for players who can support the recent change in strategy that until LW looked great.. so players whom CAN hit  a target and have the skills to help slow tempo and keep the footy ala vs Pies but with more pressure being applied.. it’s no secret just look at the ins!!!

not to mention Max being back I think it’s intriguing INS and if it works it could be landmark moment for our mix.. Brown deserves his shot, and finishes well but fwd pressure game MUST be better, that’s the key for us.

Ive seen it all.

Shane Warne cologne. Who would buy this?

So swarve,sophisticated and special.

I bet it smells like a mix of stale cigarette smoke, ham and pineapple pizza, vic bitter and a dash of brut 33.

Hope I dont get any for father's day this year.

Got on the Saints at $8 for 40+

We do not win games like this. Goody will be writing his resume by half time.

I am fighting my anxiety with positive thoughts. In other words, I’m begging for a win.

One of the best pieces of sporting commentary ever. Ali has thrown big right hands as a lead, knock out punch which he had never done. The analogy with a footy tea, Melbourne is spot on. Who is gonna dig deep. So far no one has appropriately for many many years. Jones and Viney do but misdirect it all at the ball and spol with their disposal.

Id prefer Oliver having spells up forward like dusty. More reliable kick.

Could get ugly tonight. Been mentioned plenty of times how the Saints have us clearly outgunned for run and carry, but it's gone a bit under the radar how much they can actually match us in the contest this year too.

Hearing Gibbo talk about how we may go long inside 50 to try and take the Saints intercept markers out of the game was an extremely sobering thing as well.

We're a bit of a mess at the moment and I don't think we have the leadership to pull it together tonight. Hoping for either a miraculous win or a loss that is bad enough to trigger genuine change and not just more corporate speak.

Why has Barlett kept mom all week?

A clearly elite case of MFCSS that all other MFCSS cases can be judged on.

OK, nicely posited, it must be true, alas. Thank you for the straight-forward diagnostic advice, FND; this aberration can summarily be dismissed within. I  do sense a disappointment is looming very soon this late afternoon. However, to be a benchmark in your eyes is a pleasing acknowledgment -  and to be considered an  'elite' state of misery may just be nudging that unreal world in which no-one can hear you scream. Carna Dees, play with contempt for the hangman.

Only so many times it's helpful to whack your coach and players in public.

Doesn't mean things haven't been said that aren't in the papers tho.

It’s the best of both worlds isn’t it.

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
