Hearing Clarkson get upset about the draft being compromised this year is absolutely music to my ears. As many have said our recruiting and subsequent development did us no favours but the compromise GC/GWS drafts set teams like us back. So I hope the Hawks have years down the bottom for their arrogance at nabbing players that had broken bodies and past it in the hopes of maintaining their top 8 status. 

I hate the cats but they at least have the intelligence to invest in some good draftees. (They can be next on the drop off though!)

Oh mate they're in strife, i think a few guys like Gunstan, Bruest, Smith etc might all get sharked by teams in the mix 

would absolutely love to get Jack Gunstan into the side, they can have their second pick back for him

nah, one of our future third's for gunston - i believe we might have two in the 2021 draft?

he's turning 30 next year and while he's still a good player he ain't worth a high second round pick i don't think

that's probably a fair call! i think he'd be a good get! Weideman would i think really benefit from his guidance in terms of his forward craft as well as the role he could play on field which would be a pretty significant upgrade on what we've gotten this year from TMAC and Brown. i think he's still good for a 30-40 goal season next year

he basically replaces fritsch for mine, but whether we could make that work is another matter

does it mean fritsch plays further up the field, challenging melksham for his role, if we were to bring in gunston?

i'm not opposed to it, but not sure how it necessarily adds something to our side, just an upgrade for an older player

I think you could play both, Fritsch and Melksham, but this would rely on Picketts pressure going to the next level and those two really putting a clear focus on their tackle games. they would make for incredibly hard match ups if they could do it though. 

especially with petracca also floating forward

i think we've proved if anything this season that fritsch melksham and hannan dont fit into the same team and instead we need a third genuine small pressure player beside kozzie and spargs. hannan id say is 30:70 for a contract next season and melkshams form has been down. so gunston could fit in the side next to fritsch probably instead of melky as i see it

He hasn't struggled at all, he has been one of the best players.  But he is a victim of one coach bringing him in then another coach taking over and doesn't like the fact he is a offensive player.

He is horrible defensively, I think we should go for him, but people need to be aware if we do he is purely an offensive player.

Goody doesnt like that so won't happen.  Salary another issue

I was loving the first part of this post mate and then you mentioned throw Tom McDonald down back. I double-took, I must admit. He's a turn over merchant. I don't think we can afford to even have him rucking in the defensive 50, let alone playing there permanently. That crumble against the Bulldogs at the stoppage was almost laughable, Jack Fitzpatrick-like.

Would love Saad though.

I know you're well connected mate, so I'm sure you're onto something here, but I wouldn't have thought a player that isn't a true KPF, another third tall if you like, would be in our sights.

I don't see him leaving Geelong but I'd love to get Tom Hawkins in a similar deal that we offered Daniel Cross as a transition into coaching. Our young key forwards dont have anyone good and senior to learn off. Hawkins comes across as pretty intelligent in interviews. Also a very good shot for goal so a position of forward/goal kicking coach would fill a position that needs attention.

I would have thought that Gunston could play the same role as Mitch Brown did on the weekend. i think the way footy is going your second big forward can be a more mobile type. 

I think we'll be looking to address our forward line, i think the club probably thinks we're going okay down back, inside the contest and Sammy is a good deep target but the outside mids, a bit of class, small forwards and some experience are probably still lacking

The way both have been going this year, he could take either spot depending on form.

Demonland is often very accepting of poor form with Jake Melksham being the prime example. I got shut down for saying Shaun Higgins was a better footballer than Jones and the same will happen here, Gunston is an upgrade on Melksham and Fritsch. 
 

We need people that can perform for the majority of game time over continuous seasons. Melksham and Fritta don’t and haven’t done that as yet. They need competition for their spots too and Gunston is a smart operator, he’s had days out against us on a lot of occasions.

What's the fascination with older players? You need to be bringing in talented 18-23 year olds not funding the retirement plans of those past their peak.

The balance is important, we are most likely only going to take 3 picks in the draft and any 18-23yo at other clubs of any ability will cost us overs.  Are we in a premiership window? Using the old premiership clock I reckon we are at 8.30PM, we are still 2-3 players away from being a premiership contender.  Our priority is strengthening our mid field and our forward line really need another high pressure exciting forward, plus another developing Key Forward.

We have 16 senior players and 6 rookies OOC that we need to accommodate in the reduced sal cap or let go. 

With player contracts expiring at the end of Oct and Trade Week starting almost immediately after the GF (Oct 24) the club needs to get a move on to re-contract those of the 22 OOC it wants to keep.

It seems the lower sal cap will be phased in but clubs like Brisbane/GCS etc who have only a handful of uncontracted senior players are better placed to keep those they want.

I fear some or our OOC rising talent:  Petty, Jordan, Sparrow, Spargo, Lockhart (still a rookie), Fritsch etc might be cherry picked out.

 

As a semi related note, I read that Jeremy Cameron wants to recoup this year's lost covid income in the next contract.  There could be many players in clubs with the same idea.  Lots of pressures on clubs to balance the lower sal cap with player expectations.

Absolutely, this will be quite a bargaining tool and I'd expect a fair few to be using it.

Yeah, that occurred to me too.  They are clearing the decks of older, highly paid players so lots of sal cap space to help them poach. 

We would have close to the most senior players to re-contract.  Throw in the likes of Viney, Hibberd, Hannan, OMac and others we may want to keep makes contract renewals are challenging. 

Its a shame we weren't able to lock in those I've mentioned above that we really wanted before covid struck. 

At least we locked in Petracca in time!  Hooray!!
