May is quick enough for mihocek, but you're right Smith would be a good match up if told his job is to stick with all game. No zoning off.

vandenBerg goes before Hannan IMO. Hannan doesn't turn it over every single kick.

Again with the Tomlinson attack. I'm happy to drop him, but not for Joel Smith, who is no better a defender than Tomlinson. He showed that earlier this year. Some physical attributes doesn't change that.

May will stick in his deep spot, probably on Reid. Unless we go Oscar in on the talls and May on a Stephenson or Ruscoe. Hibberd’s got the job on Stephenson before if he’s deep, Joel wasn’t smart enough. 
 

I think with Rivers in providing skill and Lockhart hopefully run and skill the mix of the backline is favouring more another defensive player like Smith or Oscar. Tomlinson was a nice change to look at more composure and skill but I just can’t see it working against legitimate teams.

I see many calling for Jones to be dropped next week. I am interested to know what it is people aren’t liking about him at the moment. 
 

I understand that he doesn’t get a lot of the ball these days, but I thought that, at times, he composed himself when the other mids turned too helter skelter and set up some nice link play. 
 

I am unsure why so many are critical of him. He seems to play his role.

Given Collingwood's likey forward setup, Lockhart to replace Tomlinson in defence. Tomlinson to a wing. Harmes out (or AVB if you insist)

Smith’s biggest mistakes were flying for contests he didn’t need to, defensively he gave McKay and Rohan a bath and kept Riewoldt relatively quiet given the chances Richmond had

Hannan fumbles or turns it over on about 50% of touches, he’s far from clean. I want him in the side but chasing and tackling at full fitness. 

Vanders stays until we look at Harmes, Rivers (Or Bennell, Baker, Sparrow, JJ etc) on a wing and find a proper solution (non Jones, non Gus). His importance to the defensive structure overcomes most of his mistakes - outside of gifting goals from free kicks but that shouldn’t be a consistent thing.

I was against thecselection of tmac. He played ok actually and all credit to him worked hard. 

My knock on him is not his ability but his condition. And but his lack of mobility was evident.

However I got it wrong, I'm happy to admit.

Not wrong in terms of the tmac maximising our chances of winning that game. But we need tmac up and about. If for no other reason than to cover the loss of any of jackson, Weed or gawn.

With no vfl how else do you get proper match conditiong into the big fella? They should have been confident about coming into that match. The roos looked depleted. 

Great chance to give tmac a really good run alternating between ruck and forward.

I wonder if the same applies to Tomlinson? Give him a couple of games down back against average opposition and get some match practice into him.

Fritsch and Melk are the other forwards that Tom can cover. Can’t play 3 talls and 2 mediums that don’t defend well. If one of those medium guys went out we could try the 3 talls again, especially if we lowered all their minutes and Gawn’s so only 2 were forward at any time.

I watched tmac closely tonight and although he ended up having an impact he looks so slow now, a number of times his direct opponent just ran past him even though he had position. Against better teams his direct opponent would end up tearing us a new one on the rebound, Melk can at least halve the contest and create a stoppage of nothing else. Fritsch other than kicking more points than goals is in great form right now I wouldn’t be swapping him for anyone

I’m not saying Tom is ahead of them just if either of those two medium guys came out we could think about 3 talls. Tom would play lead up CHF/cover Weid if he needs a rest and Jackson would play smaller in a flank role and ruck more than he has been with Gawn in.

Tom has to clunk a lot of marks and do a power of running to really be useful as a forward given his limited mobility but credit where it’s due for his effort tonight. Gave it his best.

Our consistent weakpoint all season has been tackling and especially tackling inside forward 50.

This game, six players laid one tackle inside 50 each, and Tom McDonald laid three, on the way to also being our leading tackler for the day with seven. He stays for at least another week to see how this evolves.  He may have found a new role. New, and possibly unique, the game's only 196cm pressure forward.  And if he is capable of being the humble hard worker he was tonight then he becomes a great support for the confidence-driven Weideman and the kid Jackson.

I also can't agree with dropping Jones as I felt he was an effective contributor and he just looked so damn happy.  Plus, I'm still on the fantasy ride to him playing his 300th in a winning grand final!

For me, the outs for Gawn (if played) and Viney are -

Melksham - consistently underwhelming.

VanDenBerg - currently not enough upside to justify the brain farts.

Sure, it looks like a tall team, but that's okay if one of your tall forwards is running around laying tackles and the other is just whatever exactly it is that Luke Jackson is!

Yes I did, twice, and yes I know you commented about  Spargo in the quote above... but

This comment needs challenging. 

So I say; Tmac has been asked to put on extra bulk to play KF but tonight showed he is still a better big winger than Tomlinson. I think Tomlinson will be looking for a third club if the current forward setup continues to show the improvement it has to date and TMac will take the wing position  Tomlinson was brought in for.

McDonald’s always been a terrible forward pressure player and he has 3 tackles and is suddenly the answer? I don’t think so. 

One of those tackles was when McKay landed on the ball after a marking contest and Tom landed on top of him. Not sure what the other 2 were. 

It was nice to see Tom give defensive effort his best shot. But the effective forward pressure was mainly from 2 things:

1. Fresh Pickett, Spargo and Hannan in

2. North’s defenders being headless chooks

This game will make or break us. It was very telling in the last quarter, with the  commentators riffing hard about how we haven’t beaten anybody who’s much chop, how we don’t have a serious forward line and how we struggle for accuracy. And all this while holding a fifty-point lead, mind you. Say what you will about commentators’ opinions, but the points they made were all valid and I think reflect the general attitude of the footy community - that we’re still not a side to be taken seriously this year. Should we be taken seriously? Next week’s result is your answer.

I like Sparrow but he is taking up precious minutes in the midfield that we need to give to Gus and Viney.

Harmes moves up field to the wing or forward line... take your pick with Jones and Tomlinson out. 

Lockhart takes Harmes spot in defence, allowing Rivers to retain his spot.

People saying we can't have 3 tall forwards is bollocks... We can keep one of them on the bench leaving our 2 key forwards in play or rotating in the Ruck while Gawn is off for a spell.

You've got to play tight and physical on Stephenson.

He will do you on the outside if given space but with no space he just doesn't go...

I think he would be too smart for Smith.

Need to think of a strategy for Darcy Moore, I'd love to see him follow his old man's footsteps & come over to us. With Howe out, if you can limit Moore's impact & negate Maynard, the 'Pies much-vaunted defence can be opened right up.
