Lloyd put their “same paced” midfield under the microscope and suggested trading one of Clayton Oliver or Angus Brayshaw at the end of the season to add a different dynamic in the middle.

“This is a same paced midfield,” Lloyd said on AFL Media's Access All Areas.

“Oliver is the same as (Jack) Viney who is the same as Brayshaw who is the same as (James) Harmes, (Ed) Langdon comes in who is tough but can’t kick the footy.

“(Adam) Tomlinson can’t get a game, (Nathan) Jones is a similar player, (Aaron) vandenBerg has a crack, (Tom) Sparrow has a crack and Harley Bennell is past his best.

“You look at them and think (about) who (should) leave at the end of the year, they need to make some hard decisions. It’s a Brayshaw or Oliver that needs to leave that club to bring a point of difference to that midfield.

“I do think they need to make some hard decisions; you can’t give up nothing to get something so an elite player needs to go.”

So if we're trading one of them, it's Brayshaw.  No offence to Gus, but he's not even in the same field as Oliver.  I'm not even so sure the club would look to trade Gus and, even if they did, I'm not sure we'll get what we want.  It's easy to say trade one, but it's harder to get the player we need.  They have to be out there and available.

Also, harsh assessment on Bennell.  His best was excellent, and even if he is a little past it due to his injury history, we've seen that he has the capability to contribute at a good level to our side.

It really depends what you can get in return, no point doing it for a second rounder.

No way for Oliver... Brayshaw as you say will get you around pick 25 or as a trade an 8-16 ranked player in another team. The latter is more likely if another team has a need. There is also the problem of his salary. Performance wise he's overpaid.

Although I would hate to see it Viney might get us more

I'm not suggesting they would, but having a Freo pick 22 + 46 and pick 24 (Hawks) would give us more potential to move up in the draft.  Freos 2nd and Matt Taberner would be a worth thinking about. They might also be wanting to trade Cerra, it was discussed on here last year, however I have not seen him play this year. Thoughts?

Oliver? Nah. Teams that need inside mids can't offer much.

How about this topic...

Could we get Tom Papley with a Brayshaw + something trade?

Lloyd definitely deserves to have his name spelt incorrectly in this thread title. He's irrelevant.

No unless the something were a low first round... (wait a minute we had one of those ??)

Cerra doesn't impress me, seems very vanilla and doesn't have a point of difference. There is no way you are getting Taberner for Brayshaw (let alone Freo throwing in a second rounder)

Brayshaw would possibly land us a late second rounder. I'd do it too. Absolute liability. Turnover merchant and game day jogger. No desperation. Doesn't want it enough. Might be ok in a better coached side.

Its a blanket no to trading Oliver. Brayshaw would need to be for overs of value To get something we directly need not for anything speculative., Otherwise we should be backing ourselves assuming a normal length game time in 2021 that we can develop him to the player he looked like he could be when we will need longer midfield depth.

Playing Gus in the middle might actually help him too.

Given Tomlinson's inclusion, I'd expect Gus to play more midfield minutes against Adelaide.

But with Trac, Viney, Oliver playing as well whose minutes do you think he will take? I am conscious Sparrow was in there as well but he needs to find another role that works to rotate through. It certainly isn’t the wing.

Goody won't even drop Gus, hard to see him trading him unfortunately.

(Unless it's all a ploy to keep his value up......)

Anyways, Gus and probs a 3rd rounder for Saad if we're making wishes.

Yeah no worries Mitty, we’ll trade one of them for Zach Merrett. [censored]

You're right. I'm getting caught up in what I'd do. :P

Lloyd should go and grow his flat top and sprinkle blades of grass.

MASSIVE NO to trade Oliver, he is only going to get better and along with Trac will be top 10 in the league in a couple years, while I think Gus can also, id probably trade him for a gun half back with speed and good disposal or a 1st round pick, nothing less.

He was an AA midfielder 2 years back and he's only going to get better.

Has plateaued a bit at the mo but will finish his career as one of the best of his generation.

Bet Lllloyd would love Oliver at EFC...guess what, you can't have him.

Exactly that Smug Lloyd can get stuffed, I'd say Gus for Saad, and a pick or Nik off

I like Lloyd but he has NFI half the time. Bit like when Essendon get over a bottom 4 team and he rates them as premiership contenders, just too reactionary a person.

There are so many ex players and other football “journalists “ in the media that they all try to squeak more loudly or “ logically “ than the other.

They are mostly hacks and [censored] up at that.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
