Hey Gonzo. I actually really appreciate your game-sense. I expect that you are frustrated but where did we lose this one?

Couldn’t get our hands on the ball in the Centre despite Gawn’s dominance in the second and third. Missed like 6 super easy shots on goal. Bennell missed one on the run from like 1.5m out. Weideman fluffed 3 easy set shots. Pickett missed another gimme. Also we made some poor choices with the ball and turned it over and got smothered a lot.
But otherwise it was great. Love watching a game ruined by bad choices and bad umpiring.

Gees Harmes was poor tonight, especially late. fumbles and poor decisions.  expected a lot better from him

Harmes has been hopeless most of the year. Stupid free kicks, fumbling, missing easy shots...

Time to give Sparrow a look.

We were slaughtered out of the middle.

We kicked poorly.

We made some silly decisions especially late in the game.

Umpiring was disgraceful.

Yes we still panic to much. Umpiring may have been poor but we received more frees than Lions

Love the comment about missing shots at goal, Brisbane weren't exactly brilliant either, we lost by less than a goal

A horrible score review, a silly 50, Brisbane 'just' better at the little things

Move on

Season probably over now. Did it ever really start for us?

Time to see if Weid can take us anywhere.

Some decent signs but so many teams have passed us by.

How is season over ...we beat Port in 4 days were 4 and 4 but really 5 and 4 Bombers won’t get close to us and still then 8 games to go against very beatable oppo for us

I'm so angry at losing that game.... it was there for us to win, but also there has to be a please explain about that umpiring! 10m kicks getting paid for Brisbane, holding the ball calls when there was absolutely zero opportunity.... AARRRRGGGGGGHHHHH

Oh and Gerard Healy should never commentate Melbourne games again. He hates us so much. His worst was when Nev was taken high with a bump to the head, he had a go at Nev and failed to mention the Brisbane guy tucking his elbow in and going for the bump

I was at the ground and we seemed to panic to many times and returned to all in and no one on outside. On a few occasions even Kossie was sucked into the contest even in pack marking in lieu of staying on outside and getting a loose ball. Many times the ball spilled out and only Brisbane players were there. Must correct this if we are to have a run at the finals. And whilst I think Bennell can be a good player for us his efforts out there tonight were shocking. Watched him closely a few times and never pushed hard to assist his mates. Just a lack of effort. Harmes and Brayshaw need to find some good form soon also.

Probably still not 100% match fit. Played 6 games in 5 years. Needs more kms in the legs and let's hope the legs hold up!

Maybe the definition of an effective disposal should be more clearly defined !!!

Its actually very clearly definined:

- A handball to a teammate that hits the intended target;

- A kick of more than 40 metres to a 50/50 contest or better for the team; or

- A kick of less than 40 metres that results in the intended target retaining possession.

So to 75% of his disposals met that criteria. 7 didn't. This doesn't tell whether his long kicks were to advantage, or not but it does imply he kicked long. He was 4th in our "meters gained" stat despite only 12 kicks, indicating he kicked longer rather than shorter.

He’s a bit soft. I really like what he brings to the table with skills but gees he hates going hard for a ground ball.

They beat us around the stoppages & centre bounces.

We've got a good crew in there but we still don't consistently work well together.

Last week we got it together but this week it was 4 individuals versus a team unit.

We make the game hard for ourselves, harder than it needs to be...

Unfortunately I think that loss has cost us this year. We still need at least 6-7 wins and yet i just cannot see that happening.

This has 2017 written all over again.

If Geelong win tomorrow we’ve lost to 3 of the top 5 plus Richmond. We’re a chance against any team from here on in with all the bottom four to come. Don’t give up just yet.

There’s; no point being dual sided if you cant hit the side of a barn with either. Spends more energy running on and off the ground than anything else. Would much prefer to see Jordon or Sparrow brought in to the mix than continue to see his fumbles and turnovers.

What is wrong with him, why has he gone backwards? You are actually not an AFL player if you can't handball and kick, Being slow just makes it even worse.

This guy came 3rd in a Brownlow, what has gone wrong?

He definitely needs a spell, isn’t offering anything right now. Wing is definitely not his position either. Their has to be someone else to play that role. Can’t imagine that Tomlinson, or even TMac would offer less roaming a wing right now.

Also appreciate your game-sense Jaded. Thanks for the run-down.

Overall I was happy with our second half and especially the last quarter. 3 goals to nil.
we showed we have grown a lot from last year. We are structured up a lot better behind the ball. A lot to like.
the second quarter was the difference when the lions got on top

He finished 3rd in the Brownlow when Viney was out injured most of the year and he was playing in the square. Petracca also was getting far less midfield minutes. At the moment he is really only depth for us which is a shame. He is trade bait but because of his performance he won't get us much.

Brisbane went to school on our kickouts (not hard, we do the same predictable thing nearly every time)

May is super overrated at the moment IMO.

Often gets outmarked too easily and usually kicks it to a contest or a howler turnover like the one that pinged straight back for Brisbane's first goal.

I reckon we need to be far more creative with his kicking and look to really gain territory.

Season is [censored]

I'm sick of this 'Oh we've played 5 of the top 8 teams' cr@p.

We should be a top 4 team and it's frustrating because I have to sit watching the game truly believing that I could coach this team to the top 4. (hand on heart).

Like why would goodwin start with Jetta on Cameron? Rankin destroyed Jetta 3 weeks earlier, so it was scary thinking what Cameron would do. Fortunately, the obvious move was made and Hibberd was put on Cameron. But it's stuff like this that Goodwin doesn't seem to understand.

Must bring in TMac to straighten us . There are sides that play 3 tall forwards and are doing quite well, we can at least  have 2 ourselves there. TMac has to play this week. We need his streghth and experience.

I suspect he'll get a call up, but I think he gets in the way of our forward set up and I wouldn't bring him in. That's just me though.

I hope we go unchanged next week.. love Jackson, he is close to ripping it apart!!

I love him too but I'm not expecting him to rip a game apart. I'm happy with his competing in the air, at ground level and his smarts. He doesn't need to rip a game apart to be doing a good job in our structure. I'd certainly welcome it, but it's unlikely at this early stage.

Close to it, he had a poor game and that cost us any chance we had of winning. Tempted to bring TMac in for him off that effort.

I thought Fritsch and Hannan were both terrible for the majority of the night. They brought a bit of pressure in the first quarter, but after that fumbled and slipped about. Even in that chain they were both involved in that ended with a Melksham goal, they both did their best to slip over or almost fall flat on their face's.

Hannan has been far too inconsistent throughout his career thus far. Fritsch's set shot kicking this year has gone off the boil in a big way. He used to be so assured, now he's more likely to miss.

We can't continue to carry two inconsistent performers in our forwardline every week, particularly when we're basically playing Bennell forward to increase the kms in his legs. That's half your forwardline that show the occasional thing or two, but then massively fade out of games. Bennell I get, the other two, not so much.

We should be a top 4 team

Delusional.

Had a bit of time to digest this and it’s not getting any better.

We were belted around the stoppages by clean, slick ball use from their mids. That’s got a lot to do with the conditions and Brisbane being more at home with the greasy ball and surface. It would be interesting to see/hear what our plans and setups at the stoppages are hoping to achieve? Having opposition roving off Max should not ever happen. He is hitting the ball exactly where he wants it to go 80%+ of the time and there isn’t a Dees mid in sight. The Lions mids had so much space in the middle. They work really hard for each other.

A lot of our forwards seem to play arrogant/showy early and they just need to do the basics right. Fritsch, Hannan, Melksham, Pickett all hope for 1/10 chances or even lower. It’s flashy looking stuff, but rarely comes off. Pickett could be a great player eventually, but if he keeps giving away free kicks for his best attribute (pressure) then he’s doing more damage than good. Jones had some typical blazing away at goal early and it showed why he had been out of the side. He’s always very rushed.

The debate around Jetta is really hard to swallow, he’s been a great player for us for a long time. Just super reliable and dogged. He’s just too slow and lacking athleticism now. He does lead with his head and it is hurting him physically but also not helping our game by being a man down. A courageous act that causes an injury is one thing, sticking your head in the firing line continually is a sign of the end.

You could tell this game was not going well from the first 2 minutes, we were off the pace from the gun.

Admirable losses on the back of a huge surge are incredibly frustrating and have covered up a lot of sub par efforts for 3-4 years. We just need to get better at controlling games, not scrap our way back into them.

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
