Well done Bartlett to get on the front foot so quickly to support Harley.

He also said:  “I am already in discussions and intend to follow up key Federal and Victorian Government Ministers to explore what can be done to strengthen laws to make people accountable and stamp out this abhorrent behaviour".

Shocked that the AFL hasn't already done this on behalf of all clubs and really all sports.

If that account is an incognito member or supporter they can [censored] right off back to the garbage bin they crawled out of. Vile POS.

Harley getting back to Senior AFL is a great football story and here’s some slime taking the moment away from him. We need these kind of good news stories right now.

Bit too rude.

I'm pretty sure they have been mate. Seem to remember Gil pushing the issue with Government and social media companies and the AFL integrity unity is involved in these cases now.

It's a growing issue being felt in social media, you may have noticed twitter have started to take action (albeit minimal) and facebook as a company have a massive internal cultural issue with how they moderate content and have had staff protests, high profile staff quit and more all over this very issue.

If so, why would Bartlett do his own thing, as his comment suggests?

If this pandemic has taught me one thing for sure is that people are selfish ignorant trash. Exhibit A.

Extra voices creates extra pressure. It's a VERY slow train with this issue, you may have seen the controversy growing with facebook already, and there's no question it's only going to get bigger.

The AFL integrity unit has been involved with all these kind of cases from what I've seen too.

i think a lot of these sm attacks are more about trolling than racism

it's all about maximising outrage and attention seeking by some sad individuals

It's still racism, even if it's just trolling.

Sadly I have to agree with you Jaded. I  have always thought that there were a lot of self centre ignorant idiots in society this pandemic has proved me correct beyond my expectations. A friend of mine calls them “ covidiots”.

sort of, but i think the more emphasis on anti-racism encourages these sick trolling types

there will always be a certain number of anti-social individuals seeking attention and delighting in creating a furore, and social media is a godsend to them

i just hope he gets outed and shamed for being a pos more than anything else

Even if they don't believe it and they are just trying to get a reaction, by using that language they contribute to the systemic oppression and vilification of the target group.

They signal to others that it is ok to speak or act that way or believe those things, even just in secret.

They signal to that group that they need to be on the look out for attacks.

That makes it racism. It makes them racist. It needs to be called out for what it is.

to clarify that the subject of my post was the "troll" and not DC

Time for social media companies to take some accountability for this mess (pardon the pun).

These gutless faceless (sorry more pun) trolls don't just appear from nowhere.  I'm no IT guru, but surely any new accounts and logins could require an IP address before allowing users to proceed.  IP addresses that get warned for unacceptable behavior get banned for escalating periods.

These platforms take billions of legitimate dollars in advertising, it's way past time that they took responsibility for conduct on their platforms.  I've heard enough of this 'no censorship of the internet rubish.  These companies are managing 'social media' platforms and profiting from the presence of the comunity, not just vanilia data access for a fee.  They have sophisticated automated artificial intelligence algorithms that screen every users data to maximise advertising revenue, fixing this problem isn't beyond them by a long shot.

We'll never completely get rid of [censored] like that but we can reach a point where everyone else knows that that kind of behaviour puts the people who do it on the outside.

Noting the 'trolling' comments - yep, there's a fair chance this same person makes fat girl jokes at parties and thinks mussie-wuzzie is a hilarious way to refer to a colleague.  I'm looking forward to the day where nobody in society is left with any doubt about it being 'Just that troll guy over there who is a jerk who nobody likes', and there are no lingering worries about your HR manager or football coach or doctor.

We're going to get there because every year more and more people are sick of it.  Just look at Demonland compared to ten or even five years ago. Even when people are irritated by the regular bursts of 'political correctness going mad' that happen, the same people are also much, much more accepting of the changing line of what is decent and acceptable.

Harley had a good game, his skills made a difference to the result, and he finished the game surrounded by teammates thrilled to share his personal moment of joy.

The drip-stain champion on the internet defines the moment only as much as society lets him, and that amount is becoming less every day.

Makes you wonder what sort of inadequate personality feels the need to perpetrate this crap. Some people just never learn. I’m sure the club will give Harley great support. I hope they identify the idiot responsible and come down hard.

Harley, you are loved by all demon members and suppoters.

So sorry this has happened to you.

The only way it hurts the perpetrator is in the hip pocket. $50,000 fine (and yes, i'm being serious. If they can't pay then off to prison you go).

Was thinking exactly the same thing.

I pitty the mental state of these socially undeveloped and ignorant humans.

Chook, while there is no place for racism, which I abhor, already sent a message of support.

Your question could be answered on here where I have been called in the last week, idiot, pig and delusional

I myself got dragged into it unfortunately through frustration at the lack of action by the mods

Social media and forums like this provide people the opportunity unrestrained to put what they like, behind a cloak of anonymity.

Until there are real consequences it will continue

Somebody in a thread called for supporter insurrection, may be the incorrect use of a word, but if somebody took it as verbatim

Don't your dare equate the unacceptable and abhorrent racial abuse leveled at indigenous people & people of colour to the names that you have been called. Many times you have baited posters on here and you have been given a lot more protection than others.

I have discussed this with you privately and yet you continually take a swipes at me and the mods.

Please don't let this thread get derailed by inserting yourself into a serious issue which has nothing to do with you.

Demonland.com strongly condemns racism in all its forms.

Comments like the one on the AFL's Twitter would have been dealt with promptly and the poster immediately banned.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Collingwood

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
