Instead of talking about Weiderman coming in for Jackson, let's talk about Weiderman in for TMac.

As I have said elsewhere.. package both Mc Donalds of to GCS for pick late round 4, both not up to it!

Interesting that I just saw a stat that Carlton were older and more experienced then us tonight.

Dazzle, it was a very young side tonight. I don't think it's doom and gloom but I now see Goodwin as akin to the little man the Blues had as coach. Will get us to a certain point but we will need to look elsewhere eventually.

Messiah complex.

When the players perform like stars for a quarter then take their foot off the gas once the pressure comes on, that's nothing to do with the coach. If you want to judge Goodwin, judge him on the first quarter - when everyone on-field was doing what they were supposed to do.

I don't disagree at all, that performance is totally on the players for me. I'm just wondering how others who seem to be gunning for Goodwin think we should be fixing this situation. Changing coaches hasn't helped us in the past not sure why it would change now.

I had no idea that you weren't big on the McDonald brothers Picket.

Problem is, unless you poach a star coach from another club, it's always a case of hire and hope.

And I honestly think we have deep seated cultural problems in our club. How many other clubs can give such depressing wins? I've been watching the Dees do this for decades. Smash a team early then sit back and get rolled. We don't often put the foot down, and that is what good clubs do.

Sometimes I wonder if this club would be too much for even the best coaches. Why are we so hopeless at maintaining 4 qtr effort?  Is it the list? Is it the coach? I honestly don't know, although I lean towards coaching/culture.

Logic says it can’t be the coach or the players because it has been going on for so long. I don’t have an answer but it seems to be part of our culture, a tendency to be arrogant and to coast along when we have a half decent side. Oh for the days of Norm Smith and Ronald Dale! Tough and hard, never give an inch stuff!

Surprised there hasn't been more of a mention of our inability to keep the ball inside our forward half.  Who can remember us having repeat inside 50s after the first qtr and a bit?

Yet in the the first qtr and until half way through the 2nd we looked good and organised and really played good pressure in the forward line. The thing was that we were not "bombing" (however that returned.

I think our defence was disjointed to say the least  We were genuinely down one tall ( because Lever does not play as a Tall and has no accountability)  I think he has taken over Jack Watts role as the side's pointer) . There seems to be no thinking in defence . on two occasions at least we had 2or 3 up none down (including some smal trying to get into the air.

Rivers overcame a nervous start to be really effective. His disposal and thinking with the ball in his hand is very good for someone so young. Harmes is a mid , Salem does not play opponents but must admit he does have good disposal skills. We need a Tom Stewart who lets opponents know he is in the area by his attack on the footy, maybe Tomlinson could fill that role.

We either bring OMac back as a lockdown 1 on 1 or shift TMac back there . We did not miss Hibberd's bombs into the fwd line one bit.

I'm one baffling coaching performance away from being on board

Has to be both body and mind with T Mc.

It's clear he has no agility or strength in the legs. Struggles to turn or jump.

But his mind seems awful as well. When he was shifted forward he got a new lease on life and confidence in a team that could really move the ball and give him a chance to clunk a few.

Now the team is struggling and he's not touching it much and it's clearly in his head. Something needs to change and fast.

I would have thought Goodwin should have Reset the attitude at Halftime

We all knew what was unfolding. Have seen it for years

Rinse and Repeat...

Better than losing, but a huge week coming up

Exactly you could sense trouble with about 5 minutes to go in second quarter, we started to lairise and Captain Max was number 1 culprit, then we had May trying for a specy off the back of the pack that led to their first goal. Added to that we stopped running and dropped tacking pressure. In short we dropped back a gear then found ourselves besieged and had no idea how to regain control. Worrying signs for me. Their is a lot of potential talent there but big questions on player selection, game plan and leadership.

They seriously need a psychologist at the club if they don't have one already. The Tigers players have Emma someone or other helping them with mindfulness and it has done them a world of good since 2016.

Our players need to learn to focus on winning the next contest regardless of the scoreboard - always the next contest. They can't keep up their intensity and get too pleased with themselves whether consciously or not. Every Melbourne supporter was excited with the first quarter and as soon as the quarter time siren went knew exactly what was on the cards.

This is completely on the players for me, and the leadership and cultural changes have to come from within. I had hoped that having Roos come in would teach them that and help foster it but doesn't seem like anything's changed. Where was the leadership from Gawn, Viney, Lever, May, TMac, Brayshaw, Salem, Oliver, Jones? These are the guys who need to be leading by example but they're some of the biggest culprits of dropping their intensity, lairising and trying dinky little kicks, sitting back and not helping out their teammates. Petracca seemed to exhibit some signs a couple of times today but it can't be one guy it needs to be across the ground. Players have to have the mentality of going for the jugular!

Think They had several out of their best 22.
We fielded ours.
Lost Newman, and one other During the game.

Did you see Tomlinsons' attempts at overhead marks today? He's inept in that area for his size.

Rivers, Harmes and Joel Smith give us 3 mobile defenders with height who can hit the contests, they just need up field pressure and confidence to attack the ball or man.

The first quarter showed what the backline can do when the pressure is on. The backline's bigger problem was knowing their roles and finding the right balance.

The forward and mid accountability was - as usual - horrendous.

Melbourne FFS!

FFS he gave the team aan absolute serve, hence why there was little interest in singing the song IMO

Gee whiz, I’m mean I get the 2nd half was highly disconcerting but I just spent 15 minutes going through multiple threads... I mean we did win.

That 1st quarter was exceptional. Petracca. We haven’t played in months and this round had the chance to throw up anything.

Lots to work on. But we have a win, and I’m going to hang my hat on to the first q until at least next week.

Didn't see the game tonight,  [censored] that is mega disappointing, actually I would go one step further and say disgraceful if that's the case.

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?
