We gave up two 1st round draft picks for someone plays zero accountable football.

Needs to give more.

I rate Smith. But he was flat out terrible today.

Melk can be a good player. But more often than not isn't. Like today. And personally it is that type of player I hate the most. Talent but pick and choose when to use it, with a dose of infuriating arrogance thrown in, type of player.

Anb is exactly the opposite. Not the most talented but his level of effort and desire never drops. That is the sort of player I like.

Then you get a player like cripps who combine talent, consistency and work rate. The true stars. How many of these do we have? Realistically only gawn and tracc.

Petracca on the rise but for now, only Gawn.

No he was no where to be seen in round 1 as well. Some of his 2018 games were pretty ordinary. I'll cut him some slack for last year as he was coming back from a knee injury.

All I am asking is what exactly is role? A dude on a fat size contract, I expect better return of services.

Lever wasn’t great today, but he showed signs pre isolation of getting back to his intercepting best. Today was only one game.

If Joel Smith plays in the team he should be forward. You can't go for the big spekkie & allow your opponent an easy goal from off the back of the pack. Not smart enough as a backman at this stage.

I don't disagree with the points re Lever

but fook me, lets wiat a season before writing the bloke off

What the hell was going on in that game on the backline. We all saw it. One clean punch over the line by May. Three prime defenders going all for a mark or was it a punch, totally unclear to who was behind .......err no one.

Carlton were absolutely gobsmacked by the ball being where it should not have been that they bumbled, fumbled and stuffed up the opportunities that went begging........

Rivers a beauty. One game wrapped

More changes to be made. Gotta get this right.

For mine it is not just how he played today. Look at his career. Massively over rated, even with the Crows. He was nowhere near an established star when he played there.

Yes, only watched highlights, glad I have a dog which needs regular dog park frolics, because otherwise I'd have been on the roller coast ride from  heaven and back. The highlights of the second half show the same old bulldust of three Melbourne players flying for marks, no-one at the bottom to mop up. I ask myself, why does this keep happening????It's like checking your Tattslotto ticket every Saturday night and finding your numbers are bulldust. The same with our back line.

You may be correct,

But for mine I am prepared to wait for him to get some consistency and play some games before writing him off.

As supporters who watch on tv we don't know what he actually brings. Bit rough to write him off so early on

I am just really disappointed in the trade we made and what we got. He may go on to play a lot of games but he has gotta find or Goody must find a role. Otherwise he is just like the bloke Cloke who dominated for a year or so and then became a bit of a laughing stock playing fast and loose without locking anyone down

Lever is a good peel off defender in a side that can get decent forward and midfield pressure. But he’s not big or athletic enough to clunk intercepts over packs like McGovern, Moore or Andrews. Or even Howe or Sicily.

I think we persevere with him at CHB. He’ll get stronger at the contest and reads the play well.

Smith did some excellent defensive things. He mostly blanketed McKay who isn’t a great player but can be dangerous on a lead. He has great closing speed, a big tank and understands angles. He made 2 big mistakes - the attempted hanger and leaving Betts at a contest we had aerial covered. But Frost kept doing that for 4 years, let’s give Smith 4 games alongside Lever and May and if he’s not totally stupid and has half decent coaching he’ll settle.

Lever was terrible tonight, really unaccountable only lucky that Smith was worse. Let me say it Omac was better round one when he kept Darling in check. Smith had no idea in the end, went up with 2 others attempting a speccy and guess who stays down for a goal.

Tmac all out of sorts and I agree he looked heavy.

I'm amazed they abandoned the experiment of him up forward, which is were he was going to play last year. I mean he kicked a bag in that practice game he got injured in and looked good.

Defenders have to know the game more than he does. Forwards too of course but up forward he can use his leap t fly for marks and the defenders have to try and spoil him. If they succeed the ball hits the deck where kozzie can get it. He is trick match up with his athleticism and his average field kicking skills and decsion making are noy exposed as much

C’mon. They guy was one of the best intercept players in the game before injuries struck. Even before we went down in 2018 he was starting to his his straps. He won’t be able to play his role effectively until the mids and forwards apply pressure up the ground. After 1/4 we got killed in those areas. They smacked us in clearances, and at every marking contest going forward, it was a Carlton player first back to the contest to get the ground ball.

I feel a bit sorry for Goodwin on this, he sees Lever play intra club matches where he watches Lever look like a star. Only problem is Goodwin hasn’t worked out no other team in the competition is as dumb as us with there forward entries.

Lever is right up there with the most overrated over paid players in the comp.

Cant believe im going to say this, but McDonald looks finished. Lever has missed alot of football and it told today. Smith was shytehouse.

Yes, I would finish a guy who is coming off an unprecedented break???!!!Touch was always going to be a problem, and this has been common across the league. Dusty Martin looked out of touch and shape. The hyperbole on here is laughable

Stats dont back that up. Even in his two best years with the Cows averaged only 5-6 marks per game in a well run defence. Over rated.

Maybe but for nearly 60 years supporters have been seeing players weaknesses and areas to address way before the coaches and selectors. Clear to see TMac looks top heavy.

Haha. Clearly not going by this article.

Have a read and educate yourself. Remember this article was in 2017. His last year with the crows in which he played a pivotal role in them making it to the Grand Final and why we paid what we did.

No need to tell me to educte myself. As it happens the summary is by a non event journo and talks about a nine game period in one year.  Comparing him to Rance and McGovern is and was laughable. They were key defenders, Lever a third tall.  Fool journos like this one were exactly what pumped up his asking price. Makes you wonder.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
