guys ive had a brainwave - if jones gets to 300 games before the mid season rookie draft (is this even happening who knows) he can retire, he gets an MCG farewell game and we applaud him and live him. but we also get to turnover the spot on a list and get an extra half a season of development into someone we like who sneaks through due to the circumstances of this years draft.

only problem i see with it is he wont want to quit mid project he'l be determined to get us to finals. but we all know if he goes around again next year (likely) its for that milestone and that alone.

am i right or am i right

If Jones gets to 300 games next season the match committee is not selecting the best 22 every week.

You've just exited Viney to FA with that insulting 2 year contract offer.  Why not just say "let him go to FA".  Or maybe you don't realise that would be the undeniable outcome of that offer?

We just gave 2 years to the other 3 - so where's the problem?

What if any of the 1 year contact players get offered 2 elsewhere - will you match any or let them go?

Every team needs some mature depth - we used 36 players this season.  I think a mature depth player definitely earns his keep at around 6+ games per season.  It will be interesting to see if any of those you've delisting achieve that at MFC or another club.

Finally on past decisions - VDB would be playing for Sydney now if we didn't give him 3 years, Melky had a bad year but he's been a very good player and has a good chance to redeem himself - I'm not writing him off.

ANB, Jetta - 1 year or 2 - it's not the sky falling. It's not a great year to have list vacancies anyway.  I think if we're not making errors like KK then we're being too conservative - there will be mistakes if you take a sufficiently aggressive list management position.

TMac was dominating in 2018 when he got the extension - 2020 Harry Hindsight - please link me to your post at the time that was against this.

i definitely give Viney his big pay day 4-5 for the sake of the exercise i left him to as in multiple years.

i'd happily give Bedford, Hore, Spargo, Jordon, Lockhart two years if there was a rival asking. i think they all have big parts to play in our near future. less sure on lockhart than i was two months ago and they have to be trusted by the coaches with consecutive games (how did bedford fall so out of favour so quickly)

i wanted vdB to go to Sydney its a position we've always been loaded in and at the end of 2018 when he signed, we drafted two mids (sparrow+jordon) plus Jones was still good to go and Trac hadnt moved in yet. + Lewis and Vince were still on the list so he has really not been required his entire time, we've been stocked.

Melky had a bad year yes, but i think we've got him going on a year two many at this stage, we arent going to win a flag with him in the team and we didnt have anyone good enough to take his spot by mid season when he shoulda lost it. and i cant see his form turning around as he gets even older (ik hes only 29 now)

and i was wrapped with the KK pick up at the time, perfect gamble, when he was on he was really damaging and young enough to make an impact but i dont think he's going to recover and its best for both parties to end that relationship. happy with the risk for sure tho

i could see nibbler was hit and miss and not like your rohan types when he got that deal he was just another stretch and i guess if we can flip him this year thats a win but he hasnt done anything to justify. thats why i can see the club making the same mistake on a hannan, hunt type who cant get a regular

i wasnt on DL at the time of TMacs deal but he has to play defence, we need a CHB and thats where he made his name, the adamancy of the coaches to not make these changes is detrimental to our side. because tomlinson is makeshift (and possibly better as a third tall forward -played that role at gws pre himmelberg), smith is also unreliable, petty has been injured but i really like him and Omac is out the door (yay) hore and lever too undersized unless u play them both and May becomes lockdown and doesn't intercept i guess

Mitch Hannan ? Did he resign or remains out of contract? He went backwards after an excellent 2018 like a few others.

Seems to be inconsistent and wants to fly for marks against taller teammates and opponents rather than crumb the pack. He could be a very good half forward with skills and pace but seems let down by his footy IQ.

I’d like to see him retained at least for another year but his 2020 form didn’t make his new contract a no-brainer.

A frustrating player.

Goes missing frequently. Doesn't push into up the wing enough like Kent could.

When he gets the ball he usually looks great but the problem is that he doesn't get it enough. Have watched him at live games working really hard to create chances for himself.

He is sort of a combination of Fritsch, Spargo and Melksham and I can't see a spot for him in the best 22. Do we hold onto him for depth when we have so many other similar players?

I would prefer to bring someone who can push into the midfield for extra run.

we need a polls option @Demonlandxx

i'd say pick one of hunt and hannan to get a new gig assuming ANB leaves, if he stays id prefer spargo and bedford got contracts.

But Melky, Nibbler, Hunt, Hannan and Spargo are 5 players who are thereabouts and when we lost this 6&7th forward spot gets rotated.

Melky has a contract, supposedly offers leadership and is proven at AFL level despite down year so he stays.

Spargo is young enough that if he starts in the team next year i see at his defining year

the other 3 i'm not sold on and i'd prefer a year out of a potential target like narkle, langdon/daniel(gws - OOC), aarts/rioli (OOC), lonie, ronke to see if they click because its fair to say the others have had chances and ultimately its been one acceptable game in 4 and theyve been given extended stints to show their worth

Hannan is a very frustrating player, I'd rather we free up a list spot. Not sold on AVB, like Hunt as a forward/wing.

A Doggies mate of mine said they were going to take Hannan back from us.  Anyone else heard similar?

While he's not always been in our best 22, he seems to play well in big games when we play well.  Would hope he stays but I guess if we're looking to bring in a key forward our forwardline line up has to change.

the dogs have so many of his types same as us, i'd be surprised he hasn't exactly shown anything to suggest he's an upgrade.

ANB, Omac, Hannan all linked to exits, finally someones making decisions based on what theyre seeing on the field rather than untapped potential and good trainer

I remember when we drafted him. A few doggies fans were annoyed we got in before them. Haven’t heard any rumours re Hannan to dogs.

Does anyone know what the actual hold up is? Its crazy that we are less than 3 weeks out from the trade period and the clubs still don't know what the list size and salary cap is.

The hold up is because the AFL wants TPP cut by 30%.   AFLPA wants 0% cut.

iirc the AFLPA got their mammoth TPP increases in the last CBA on the back of much fought '% of AFL Revenue' as a base.  Now that the base has evaporated they want to change the goal posts.

I saw an article a few weeks ago that the FA and trade times could be put back a few weeks because of the sal cap delay.

Edit: cba-negotiations

Jeez that's dumb and tone deaf of the AFLPA.

People are losing their jobs, on JS going to $40/day next year, what is it - 106 unemployed for every job - the real world is in a mess and these clowns want to shift the goal posts from a % to an absolute. Can't have it both ways.

Hope the AFL plays hardball here.

I know the clubs are expecting all expecting a 30% cut across all pay for admin based roles - those that survive, one person in a management role (at another club) told me it was like moving back to where they were 10 years ago, with people doing extra work that in the last few years they would have just gone and got a few extra staff in for. The whole industry ballooned out massively - as we've seen with the reports of how many staff are at headquarters. So there's a fair chance that if all admin staff are taking a massive hit and this has gone into the footy departments as well, then the players are going to be forced into a big cut as well. The AFLPA are fully entitled to try and maximise their returns for players, but there going to have to come back to reality a little.

I think on this occasion the AFL have the better hand to play. IMO if the union won't budge of salary levels or won't come down enough then the league simply reduces number of players on the list until the total dollars comes out where they want. Tell the union they can X players on y salary cap  or x-30% players on y salary cap.

how can every club already have more list changes than us FFS why do we struggle so much with moving on from players who dont perform over an extended period of time, soooo frustrating, we've genuinely got no clue what we're doing do we.

I actually meant all the other clubs as Turner stated every other club has delisted more players than the mfc which is incorrect, Tigers and Cats for starters haven't.

There is still plenty of time to go before it needs to be done.

Correct, but I hope we dont languish and dally for the sake of a few minor details!

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
