The Northern Blues or to give them their historic name Preston were along with Port Melbourne the absolute power houses of the VFA. A sensible approach is for players to be paid on a percentage of generated club revenue, percentage to be agreed on. That would be fair assuming complete transparency is adhered to.  Further I would like to see all players be paid equally until certainty to the finances of the competition is restored.

NHL has a salary cap but the players also pay escrow:

The NHL and NHLPA withhold a percentage of player salaries, or escrow, during the season as a mechanism to ensure teams and players achieve a 50-50 split of hockey related revenue, per the rules set in the CBA. ... The amount of the escrow is simply a function of how high the cap is. Higher the cap, higher the escrow.”

Players hate it as usually they have to pay 5% to escrow to balance out the salary paid vs hockey revenue on top of state taxes (some states have zero tax, some as high as 50%.)

This talk of merging is totally gross. And especially with Carlton who as far as I am concerned can merge with the filth.

Horrific thought but one that needs to be played out in the boardroom as DJ has mentioned I think this is a real possibility for the 3 bottom tier clubs in Melb, us being one of them.

Merging with Carlscum should never ever be considered or spoken about.
i would rather the MFC ceased to exist than to join forces with those bastards

Agree totally, as if the world isn’t depressing enough at the moment you have people suggesting this.

It's important to note that since October the players have been paid their salary up until now ... 5 monthly payments at a guess.

But the club was expecting money from gate receipts,  corporate,  ongoing sponsorship money,  NT money,  MCC money,  Pokies income and most importantly,  the end of year dividend from the AFL (which is often $12Million plus)  The membershio sales will have helped enormously but that money has slowed dramatically as well.

To state that we have a cash-flow issue would be understating things.  The flow would be slowing to a trickle so if there's no money,  there's no money.  Normally we'd have a credit line or overdraft with the promise of incoming money but again,  what money?

The AFL has cash reserves to hopefully bail out the clubs but that could be eaten up quite quickly as well.

And are there enough cash reserves?

You'd think not with the AFL asking the players to take a 79% pay cut.

And will the AFL help out the clubs equally?

Some of the clubs were in a precarious position before the Pandemic.  Others are cashed-up.  Our club would probably be in the lower tier of the middle ground.  And that's not a strong position by any means.

another option - by far my preferred one - is that the afl finally embraces it's quasi-socialism and instead of clubs making revenue on gate takings, finals, merchandise etc., the afl takes it ALL and splits all revenues such as those, as well as broadcast rights etc., evenly between the 18 clubs

no more haves and have-nots, but instead everyone is on an equal footing

The AFL told the Clubs there is no games.
i expect The AFL to keep all Clubs viable.
That doesn’t mean pay all wages for now, people have to go. But the Clubs must be kept alive...

The AFL should die before the Clubs, if it comes to that point.

No one barracks for the AFL

Would anyone on here on a fixed contract take 79% pay cut? Contracts are there for a reason. To provide job security especially in a career that on average lasts 4 years. The PA are there to represent the best interests of the playing group and that is what they are doing.
extreme circumstances for sure but I’m trying to see things from the player’s perspective

Why.?

Why not look at it from all our perspectives,  and the good of the community,  to maintain our code of footy far into our futures,  and that of our kids futures.

This should have happened 20 years ago once they began compromising the fixture for tv dollars.

If at the end of all this Melbourne ends up merging or dying I'll be lost to the AFL. I don't think that would've been the case in the past but the game on its own is not enough to keep me interested anymore. Without the tribalism of supporting the club I have since I was born, that my family support, footy as it is played in the AFL would hold little interest.

I think you'll find that the AFL (perhaps when it was the VFL) tried that and found that the clubs became lazy. There was no incentive for individual clubs to do anything for their members and supporters as there was no additional financial benefit from doing so. The current model (pre-coronavirus), with all its flaws, might be the best because it encourges all clubs to maximise their revenue while still supporting those which need more support.

I’m in London. I almost certainly have a mild case of the virus. For me it’s not been dramatic, I’m 40 and in solid health. They currently only test here if you’re admitted.

The first week was like a light flu. But the past three days it’s like someone standing on my chest (a very light person). I notice the work to breathe. I can fully appreciate the need for ventilators and the seriousness it could cause in others.

I’m completely fine and confident I’ll recover without any need for a hospital visit.

Regarding AFL!

I was firmly of the belief they’d play a few rounds and then be halted by a surge of cases.

Then infections would peak over a couple of months. At some stage, games could resume as Australia moved past the mass infection-at-once threat.

But it seems Australia is trying for full containment.

That appears different to the northern hemisphere, (which might be sensible, I’m not a doctor)

I wonder what this will mean for the rest of the season? I had optimism, but not so sure now.

Note- I know many people have far more concerning issues than if we’ll see football again in 2020. For those, I wish you the best and hope for the best.

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k
