The New Home Base & Training Ground Thread

I posted that staying could be the best leverage to get Caulfield done.

I didn't know that the CRRT had an MOU with us yet. If they have that is great.

If the State Government role is only some funding and they are asking us to not make any announcements at this point, for obvious reasons, that is also good, if we have an airtight commitment for the funding from them, or any new Government.

If the AFL is now involved in pushing us to Waverley temporarily, that could well be as a result of an agreement, involving them with funding also.

A lot of unknowns here, but the public use of the words "interim for Waverley until Caulfield is done" is a great sign that it will happen.

We have met with the federal government as well, as to how that meeting went, I have no idea.

It’s laughable that a development of this scale, for this specific purpose, is now deemed unacceptable due to something so simple.

Yes and it is probably a good example of why you take your time and make sure everything is correct.

Just as a side issue, Hawks are upset that their new base is very windy and they are now looking at measures to reduce wind gusts over the area.

Figures of $500k have been mentioned for posts and protective sheeting to reduce, but not eliminate wind gusts.

Right on top of a hill.

The unpredicted predictable.

Someone posted on here the other day that staying out at AAMI Park until Caulfield is signed off is a legitimate leverage piece.

And the CRRT have extended the MOU with the club for Caulfield, so it is conceivable we're getting closer, but I do wonder what leverage the AFL are applying for us to move to Waverley.

Maybe the club needs to be more strategic in how they close this deal with the state government.

the state government is broke - not sure how much they'll be able to leverage considering they've pulled PSO's from train stations & are closing police stations earlier - there's not exactly ample funds to be handed out

I don't undetstand this notion that getting Caulfield was going to be quick and easy. You have many parties to deal with, public land under a trust, MRC land and you want to be seeking a substantial contribution to funding from 3 tiers of governnent (this notion that only the State Governnent is funding is simplistic). Lots of moving parts but I have never read anything that suggests it is off the table.

Is Waverley an improvement on Gosch's Paddock/AAMI with admin at the MCG, indeed it is.

Waverley was too small for the Hawks as there is only one oval. A decade ago that was ok, today it is not, given AFLW/VFLW and NGA Academy training. The Dees still have a decent and modern secondary facility at Casey (where VFL and some AFLW will be played). The Hawks were not in that position, they really had to move.

Maybe its best to get the keys to Waverley ASAP as the Hawks are finding Dingley Tip too windy and who knows they may try to sneak back to Waverley for some training sessions 🌬 🌪 😁

Any details emerging from that would be great to hear Mr God...if they are shareable.

The state government is not broke. It is guaranteed by the Commonwealth and the RBA owns most of the semis issued by the Vic gov.

Anyway, we're talking about a contribution of perhaps $20 million, which should be framed as a community initiative. Right now, public land is used by a select group of people and with our proposal, we'd be opening the space up to the public.

Frame it right and the proposal is a drop in the ocean.

Meanwhile, perhaps the state gov should bring back into public ownership some of the tollroads it helped build with federal funding and Kennett sold to foreign companies for 99 year leases.

I was told months ago that discussions had been had with the Feds. Lets just say that the Feds aint the holdup.

When did you start your 3-5 years? we are already into the four year of the Caulfield move. I see nothing to suggest we are any closer than we were 3 years ago.

Not quite sure about the first paragraph. No other state is quite in our position and if the commonwealth was underwriting Victoria Glasgow wouldn’t be hosted the Commonwealth Games.

Agree that $20 million should be a drop in the ocean for the state government and it absolutely should be framed as a community use project. It is obvious where the hold up is coming from.

I think we will eventually get there but more patience is required.

firstly i see the following: Caulfield > Waverley > Current

The club (and the press) also have said that they see a waverley move as an interim move

goschs paddock has suddenly become a bargaining asset with collingwood and tennis australia (incl vic gov) being strategically interested (possibly richmond too). Therefore, my concern is that if we give up aami without any caulfield guarantees we could be stranded at waverley. I say could be, because there may in fact be some guarantees re caulfield that are close to being announced, but we are just in the dark at this stage.

i don't see waverley as a long term solution for exactly the same reasons as hawthorn did, and these have been discussed many times here (expansion ability, 2 ovals, closed training, aflw, vfl, vflw etc)

step warily

DC my fear is if we move to Waverley it is a handy way of getting the subject off the agenda that the AFL has and remember the new Tassie team is going to suck up lots of AFL money. It is a quick way for the AFL / state government to get the MFC out of Goschs. With no agreement on Caulfield if we move to Waverley we will be stuck there forever. Caulfield will be in the same draw as the Airport train service. Then be bought out every election year then quickly returned to the draw. The other wild card is the next election is in November it is difficult to see Labor being returned so what is the Liberal party / the red head party attitude? A move to Waverley will see us there forever.

I just don’t get this thinking - we’ve never had a home base, we get some sort of one and now people are annoyed because Caulfield gets potentially gets pushed back? Who cares - it’s a HUGE upgrade over anything we’ve ever had? What’s difficult about this - it’s the right call, if it adds a few years to Caulfield it simply doesn’t matter - would you rather something now or still nothing in seven, eight, nine, 10 years etc? It’s a no brainer

I will be dead!

those are legitimate concerns, od. hence the discussion of potential leverage re aami's emerging strategic position

I wonder if our time was out at the MCG. Our offices and boardroom will be easily converted into dining or corporate boxes. Plus they want to redevelop the southern stand. Corporate dollars V rent, AFL own an empty facility they get a tenant we get a home base half way towards our second facility.

Caulfield is a mile off, Waverley will be our home for many years.

Are we moving out of the MCG totally? Will the Demon Shop be out there?

Moving the Demon Shop would be very unwise. Gameday is their busiest day by far. Yeah, folks can buy stuff online but many prefer to go to the shop to try stuff on or browse.

I worked down that way for over 20 years any resident will tell you it is a windy area. Evidently they didnt ask about the wind. It is also in the same rain band as Sandown, Waverley, Dingly and Dandenong. All you need do is ask the BOM for records. It appears they didnt!

To your edit - the AFL bought Waverley from the hawks for about $20 mil last year, could be that?

And the Hawks bought it for 1 dollar in 2004

So are we leasing Waverley and how much? A buck a year?

Currency users like the Victorian Government in theory have revenue constraints, but really, these are political constraints.

If you think for one moment the Commonwealth would let Victoria collapse in the liabilities (AUDs) it issues, I think you're mistaken.

I think the Commonwealth Games are not worth hosting. Political decision made.

Caulfield has community benefits and is worth funding.

That's a good point about being able to also use Casey if we go to Waverley - given Waverley's location, and the fact its fight on the freeway it would be a pretty quick drive to casey

Personally, from the perspective of accessibility, I'd prefer Waverley to Caufield anyway.

Does put us more in the population growth belt than Caufield as well at the same time as being a little more central east where alot of our younger supporters live.

Im not sure in what universe its more accessible. You know they never did build the rail to artic Park

Caulfield, well Glen Iris is actually the geocentre of Melbourne.

Waverley is and always has been the boonies where unfortunates freeze to death.

Will be interesting to see what effect in reality occurs.

Half an hour, according to Google Maps

There’s no way in hell that this project gets all the green lights and falls over for lack of funding. The money will be found, you can take that to the bank. The AFL generate untold millions for the State and Country, they know this needs to happen.

Imagine a Chief Marketing Officer trying to explain to a board that they want to spend millions on naming rights for a training facility that may or may not get built, has no location and no timeline for building.

Better chance getting a wealthy benefactor to put their name to it.

FYI @Redleg Stadium is taken…

Longwood Football Netball Club.

Forever, we might as well change our name to the Waverley Demons. We will be there forever.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
