I was thinking the same thing. As you say he knows this is the last roll of the dice. He sounded completely sincere when he said in the short interview at Perth airport before flying into Melbourne that he would give anything to play AFL football again.

I have agoo feeling about this. A redemption story. The headline might be:

Bennell exorcises his demons at the Demons

Not into exorcisms, nor am I into miracles. He's played 2 games in five seasons. It sounds like you also believe in the Resurrection?????

This post reminds me of that apocryphal story about Peter Hudson., as per this quote from Sport Australia Hall of fame website:

' Peter Hudson's impact on Australian football is perhaps summed up by this well known story. The question on the board outside a church not far from Glenferrie oval had been aimed at provoking some kind of contemplation. "What would you do if Jesus Christ came to Hawthorn today?" Underneath it some graffiti wit had scrawled, "Move Peter Hudson to centre half forward."'

Having a kid makes most people reassess life. He also has Jetta to go do programs with. Bennell would be great with kids and struggling teenagers. He would be worth his money on that alone.
I do expect a norm smith out of him thou.

he is saying all the right things to get a contract but he lacks the passion to play footy.

“I just think I’ve still got a lot more in the tank. I’ve come this far and I’m not going to give up, just because of my latest injury. I’m not a person who will just chuck the towel in and give up.

“I love training and I love football. Without football, who knows where I’ll be?

“Getting a third opportunity at the highest level would be life-changing for myself and my partner and my family – it would be the luckiest thing. It would mean a lot to me and my family.”

I’m pretty convinced he means all of that. He’s got very different, very real priorities now. And I’d say a much healthier perspective.

Life changing is the key comment.

Thanks Webber.

A couple of questions.

I didn't follow Bennll's' effort to get back playing, but my sense is he was training ok but when he ramped it up to get game day ready he inevitably broke down. Am i right in thinking that if that is the case he might have a reasonable fitness base?

And i know it is not you area of experise as such but if his calf issue is sorted is there any impediment related to the issues he has had to reaching optimal fitness?

I have only heard binman what Norm Smith’s Curse also reported, about the neural release. Don’t know anything about subsequent training progress.

My mail is Bennell wants to come pending some further investigation into his injuries.  The ops he has had and rehab required means he won’t be available until mid way through the season.

Sounds like it will be down to who has the best to offer when it comes to medical and conditioning. How do we compare to Saints in that department?

For the record, I wish Harvey Benell all the very best and if it came pass that he ends up at MFC I'd keep my fingers crossed for him. We all need as many cracks at it as we can get because in the end, life ain't that very fair.To be cursed by so much injury is in itself not fair.

You've had plenty of mail over the last few months.  I'd love to go back and see how much of it was right.

Neither really.  I just noted that you've mentioned that you've had inside mail a bit this trade period and was interested in your strike rate.  If it's been good then you're someone to look out for, like Chook in Perth, in the future.

If your strike rate was poor then it's the opposite.  Not a dig at all.

I can't be bothered actually looking though.  Would take too much time.

I'm feeling pretty good about this! It's risky, but a potentially hugely rewarding thing for a (finally) forward thinking MFC to do!

This would be caviar on the cake.

I think you've spelled his name wrong. I believe the correct spelling is:

B-A-S-I-L

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full
