picket fence 18,181 Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 Joel Smith , Joel Smith Or Joel Smith. If Oscar plays it is an indictment on the FD Because Sam Frost was outsatnding in very very ordinary company and in spite of faults he is light years ahead of Oscar!! 3 Quote

CBDees 3,167 Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 And Petty is better for us in the forward half so shouldn’t be an option. Happy to try O’Mac (assuming May is FF). I like Joel Smith but again he may be a forward (at the risk of clogging the forward half). Hore on interchange or pocket. Quote
Lord Travis 10,819 Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 Smith not big enough for key position and can’t get on the park. Hore better on flank or back pocket also. Petty showed more up forward, but may be the right option at CHB. May at FB. Lever best as third tall. That leaves Oscar as the default option... 2 Quote
JV7 2,375 Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 Gees you know it's the off season... Surely we don't need individual threads on different positions... Just conversation in the best 22 thread would be enough ?♂️ Quote
ding 5,126 Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 The only position for Oscar is CHB. He doesnt have the agility to play and further forward than that, and any closer to (oppo) goal makes his mistakes more costly. Unless he can improve his manoeuvrability out of sight, its about the only place he can play. Having said that, he still looks like our best option in that role for the time being. Quote
Pulp Fritschon 774 Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 Looks as if Oscar will get first crack as the 2nd tall and I am ok with that. Hope he goes well and starts to play with some confidence. Just looked very timid last season and didn’t back his ability to intercept at all. Had chances to mark the ball but was always to worried about his opponent. I wouldn’t rule out Tomlinson playing as the 2nd tall in the 2nd half of the year if the wing position doesn’t work as planned. This would allow Hunt and Langdon to be our wingers. Pleased to hear someone on training thread mention Hunt was training with the midfield. I think wing or back is where he will do best. 1 Quote
Ollie fan 3,671 Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 Giving Frost away was sooooo dumb. Lever is not good one on one and Oscar is a trier but is not up to the top opponents he would have to face. 2 Quote
Kent 2,920 Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 Oscar by default. Cannot belivee what we did to Frost. Anyhows? Quote

Bring-Back-Powell 15,547 Posted January 17, 2020 Posted January 17, 2020 In 2018, we went 8-2 between rounds 16 and the semi final and O Mac played in all those games and played his role quite well. He'll play round 1 along with May and Lever in trying to stop JK, Darling and Oscar Allen. I don't mind Joel Smith but I don't see him as a key defender able to take a Darling or Kennedy. Perhaps he and Hore will be fighting one another for a spot in defence, independent of O Mac. 1 1 Quote

Demon Dude 430 Posted January 17, 2020 Posted January 17, 2020 I would prefer a combo of May and Lever, with Smith replacing Frost. I reckon that could handle most forward lines each week. Also with options like Tomlinson and Petty in the team it gives us cover back there if we need another tall defender option in game. I think that's the sort of flexibility the team needs and you can't get by playing Oscar. also if the plan really is to play 3 tall defenders each week in May, Lever and Oscar, then who is the reserve tall defender if one of them gets injured? Besides Petty, who's been training with the forwards, i dont see one. it just doesn't seem feasable that that is the long term plan to me. 1 Quote

He has played 11 afl games has had his injury concerns. l don't know what you see in him to even talk about him let alone making it in the 22 . He would have to improve and impress immensely and take his chances if given an opportunity. Good luck he will need it. They are my thoughts. Edited January 18, 2020 by nosoupforme Quote

I think with another season under his belt, Petty may be the best option. We need to configure a running backline again - moreso than a more static muscle band - in which the ball movement is paramount. This realisation is what made Frosty to transform himself and may also work for Petty who is young enough, fit enough and can reach good tapping heights (and kick to position) to spoil opposition forward drives. May can excel - and ably supported by other movers this year - in the moving ball carriage and Lever can chip to the clearance spots by both hand and foot - and as a clearing punch in a pack - and again, ably supported by the mobiles and smalls working together. We have some forward line talent for 2020 who could blitzkrieg with practice and game time effort/patience. Petty could be better utiliised down back, I'd reckon, not playing a static prop forward role in the Weed ilk. We may see JSmith begin to cement his various ball-getting methods down forward as a consequence, as well, and we all know that he can 'kick em'. Quote
