Was quite a boring interview and nothing new for anyone that has been following the news closely.

Was a bit delusional with his answers to the Frost question claiming Jetta didn't play this season and using him as an example of someone who fills the same position.

Note from AFL Trade Radio tweets:

  • "We expect May and lever to play the majority of next year. We also have Oscar McDonald and Harrison Petty. Sam has a great opportunity at Hawthorn and he has a better offer at Hawthorn, so well done to Sam" - Josh Mahoney on Frost
  • Mahoney: We can understand supporters asking us the question why we have let Sam go. We think we have a number of players who can play in our backline. There are a lot of players who can play that role
  • Mahoney: We were satisfied with the deal. We looked at the Frost and Langdon deals as a bit of a package
  • Mahoney on Langdon: The targets during this period were Tomlinson and Langdon. They both play important roles and bring a running power to our midfield
  • "Maybe not during the trade period. it's an area we want to address, There might be some players on our list that can fill that role. We think we have enough power to kick winning scores" - Josh Mahoney on targeting a small forward
  • Mahoney: We just didn't have any natural wingers on our list. It's such an important role. We tried over 15 guys in that positions this year and no one really nailed it. To be able to bring in two players who play that role will really add to the mix that we've got
  • Mahoney: We won't get in the Brad Hill discussion. Once a player has made his mind up and is invested in it, it's fraught with danger. And we don't have the ability to be able to pay Brad
  • Mahoney: The only question we've had for Angus Brayshaw was from Fremantle around the Langdon deal. But that was a very quick conversation. He'll be staying at the Dees
  • Mahoney on Braydon Preuss: He really improved this year....we see him as a really important player for us. We had some clubs ask, but we're committed to having him on our list next year

* Letting go of Sam Frost - does it leave us thin? - they don't think so, expect lever & may and oscar to have full pre-season and play all year

EVERY TIME I HEAR OSCAR’s NAME IN DEFENCE AND ONE ON ONE WORRIES THE HELL OUT OF ME GIVEN WHAT HE HAS DONE TO DATE

* May & Lever can play tall lockdown and mobile defender role

IMO LEVER CANNOT PLAY A LOCKDOWN ROLL AND WE WILL BE SHORT IN THE BACKLINE

* Won't explore small forward role in the trade period. believe our forward line in 2018 was good enough and hope it can do it again in 2020

WE “HOPE” it can do it again  THIS IS SOMETHING I WAS HOPING WE WOULD ADDRESS IN THIS TRADE. THIS IS DISAPPOINTING TO HEAR

Hogan was part of that forward line so the answer doesn't carry a lot of weight...

Maybe we have another tall forward in mind.

Garlett too

I guess they're banking on full seasons from Melksham and Hannan but I don't think we have that natural small forward. None of our forwards really have "goal sense" ie the ability to find the goals when snapping out of a pack or from a pocket. That's something we desperately lack.

He didn’t actually say he plays the same position.  He said they have options Lever, May, OMac, Petty, Hore, JETTA and Hibberd.   It makes perfect sense.

Frost is not a great loss at all.

What I found interesting is he seemed to be saying no to a small forward in the trade period, but yes they would try in the draft. This makes me think we want to split the pick & draft Weightman.

Spot on rjay and while he did not play finals he was a major factor during  the year that got us into a finals position.

both grand finalists This year had multiple good KPF's who kicked multiple goals. We have one average KPF.

Interesting that Preuss was mentioned. Wonder what was on offer.

Also no mention of Hannan .... cannot recall who floated some interest in him.

For completion no mention of Stretch or JKH. Hope they both find a home.

To be fair, Hogan didn't play at all in the final few games and then in any of our finals.  We showed that we could function quite well without him.

Its all quite bizarre, can't believe how much we forgot to football this year...

Or Serong, but he’s not as much of a specialist, goal kicking forward. If we keep 3, I think we take Serong though. Better player.

You have forgotten all the games that he made a major contrabition us wining with multiple goals during the season.

Without him in 2018 there would have been no finals appearance.

We have not replace the best KPF we had, kicking a winning score was a major problem in 2019 and will again be a problem in 2020.

The feeling I got from Mahoney was that we are done with the trade period and will now focus on the Draft.

Hogan kick 3 or more goals in 9 games in 2018.

7 of those we won comfortably against Suns, Bulldogs, Bulldogs, Crows, Suns, Saints, Lions. The average winning margin in those games was over 40 points and only the Lions game where we had a huge lead, hit a wall then pulled away was remotely close.

The only times  he kicked 3 or more in close games or losses were against the Cats in round 1 where he kicked 3 straight and had 3 marks and against the Saints in that awful loss.

There's not a single game in 2018 that we won that we would've lost if he was missing - apart from if it meant Tom McDonald and one of Smith/Weideman were also missing.

Our biggest issue with key forwards for 2020 is getting Tom McDonald right and making sure we have the depth to cover the 2nd tall forward spot. If Tom McDonald gets back to 2018 form/fitness and we have 22 solid 'do your job' games from Weideman/Petty/other competent key forward then we'll be fine.

Poking my eyes out with a fork. I hate this stuff. Seems to be Mahoney 101 every trade period. I don't think either deal is bad and I get that they've gained and lost a future 2nd round pick but treat each deal in isolation and get the best possible deal.

The object of the trade period should be to make the best possible improvements to the list not to do deals that are packaged up nicely.

At least we didn't get the 'we wanted to finalise deals early to work on other priorities' this year, usually get that one every trade period before nothing further gets done.

He was taking the best defenders and still kicking goals. You are kidding yourself if you think he was not a major contributor in 2018. Lots of If's there DS, 22 good games from Weideman will will be a big first for a guy who struggles to put together 5 reasonable games . I know there is no alternative, it is the Weid or bust for a KPF other than TMac but we look thin in the forward department to me.

I don't know why anyone has any issues.

We have gained Langdon, Tomlinson, and still have a pick in each of the first three rounds for this year and 2020

For Frost

T Mc took the best defenders and was clunking marks, splitting packs and kicking his set shots. Melksham was also vital as the set up man. Weideman doesn't have to have 22 good games, half a dozen good games, not too many shockers and if he's injured we need reasonable cover. Richmond and West Coast and arguably GWS are still the only teams with 2 gun key forwards and Riewoldt missed or was underdone for most of the year and Josh Kennedy never plays a full season in good health.

Tommy should bounce back and give us a dangerous tall, if not then we'll have to look for that player and it won't matter that we didn't add a Bruce or a Jenkins. No point having a stack of 2nd best guys if you don't have a stud. The lack of dangerous smalls is probably the bigger issue that we haven't attempted to solve so far, hopefully the draft is the solution.

Spot on.

Plus we have the option of splitting pick three if the right offer is tabled. That can potentially strengthen our hand even further.

I have completely the opposite view. Our team doesn’t play better because we ‘won’ 2 different trades, we play better because we improved our team overall over the period. The deals are not isolated, they are part of a bigger picture.

For instance, everyone was filthy that we paid 25 for Melksham early, and the quickly got 29, 50 and Kennedy for Howe and Toumpas. This place was an absolute nightmare during that time because we were always pushovers etc.

Then we used that pick 29 to help us go from pick 6 into pick 3 and 10, before using one of the picks we got back to turn pick 10 into pick 7. And then everyone thought we were geniuses. But we needed the extra second round pick to make those other deals happen, plus time to do the deals, so we took the hit on that trade to do it quickly and cam out as big winners overall.

The point is, the trades don’t exist in a vacuum, so it’s short sighted to look at the in isolation.

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
