Interesting caveat on that...he said for 2 picks in the top 10.

...but happy to go with pick 3.

That's the most interesting point from the interview.

Who could offer us 2 top 10 picks?

No not quiet top 10 but have to be realistic. General option seems to be that after first 2 in draft there isn’t a lot between the next lot of prospects so why would any team other than GWS want to swap 2 top 10 picks for 1? Makes sense for GWS as they in effect get 2. So if we swapped with GWS for  11,15 and their compo pick and then used the later two to get into top 10 it would hopefully allow is pick up 2 players like Stephens and Weightman.

Our window is closed with these numpties running the MFC. Tomlinson was the worst player in the GF and has struggled to be in the best 22 all year. He is only OK at a few things but not great anything. Offering  Frost, our best defender, more money would have been better value. Elliot is fragile and overpriced we would get better value out of Butler. Langdon is OK but not top tier and won't make up the difference for the team to be successful. There are about ten players at Freo I would rather target. May is an overpriced spud that no other team was gullible enough to want, yet he is the most secure player on our list. MFC is stuffed. Everybody sees Melbourne coming.

Just listened to the podcast. Refreshingly open and transparent. Yes, individuals may have personal views about Frosty,  O-Mac, AVB, Nibbler and the like, but Mahoney presented clear and logical reasons for immediate short term planning. Proof of the merits of this thinking will obviously not be visible until the end of 2020. I really liked the interview and like others I do not understand the lack of love for Lyon.

The ting i found very intersting when Garry asked about Assistant and development coaches, JM said there will be no more coaches.. Just Richo and the Casey coach being a development coach... surely that cannot be correct.

Agreee.

Out Rawlings, Macca, Jennings.

In Richo. ??????

Reality check?  Membership and potentially sponsor revenue down significantly... pressures through board / admin on budget factors?  What happens when your year goes to pot.

Unless its promotion from within and if that is the case this needs to be communicated, i feel its pretty worrying that we lose 3 senior positions and we only replace 1 of them.

A bit of a worry really, thats 3 of the better ones gone.

The club is keeping plenty of room in the soft cap so they can sack Goodwin half way through next year. In all seriousness though it is a worry why we haven’t appointed any other assistants.

Yes or maybe another outside announcement to come D3?  A tad late one would have thought but then the Crows are still looking for their head coach.

Another possibility, they are more than happy with Richo who might be happy assisting outside of the Director role in terms of hands on assistance.  Lost a little control with message/cohesion  during this season?  Too many fingers in too many pies and / a bit of chinese whispers between line, assistant / development (Macca) and finally Goody.

Goody & Mahoney happy to tighten things up a little and take a bit more control with a tighter top down model vs spreading the load/delegating a bit more but losing the control / message / theme through the extra layers in communication channels.

Just putting it out there.

Maybe it was a case of too many cooks?  Rawlings is definitely a loss. Richo replaces Macca, Jennings - looked like that was not the best fit with Goody from some of the box footage during the year.  So maybe tightening all this up will give us better *connection*???

Yep all possibilities RN.. and i kind of agree that we have to many coaches as it is (all footy clubs)

Just missed that one....see above Trout.  One has to assume good reason/s and it's under control.  We know nothing of the inner workings.  Patience is a virtue.  What to do. Wait for the wash up at year's end and see what we're taking into 2020.

If you don't have enough money to  spend the full soft cap a club is in trouble.

For those who can remember the requirement to spend 90% of the salary cap was brought into pressure Fitzroy

Yeah im starting to think this is a real possibility.

I think that was a major problem this year.

Too many conflicting messages and teachings. The List was overloaded with structures, would explain some of this years confusion on Game Day.

Listening to Craig Jennings on the Radio was hard work  he is a smart guy, but his brain is wired differently!!

Strip it right back, everyone on the same page...

I'm not overly concerned as long as major roles are covered off come pre-season in full swing i reckon SF.  There's also the quality over quantity factor.  The Rawlings sit a bit of a worry though.  Think he finished as forward line coach so who covers that now?

Surely the $$ are there for 2020 after a record membership DJ?

This is why i'm thinking a bit of a trim i  prep for next year's drop off (2021) but also possibly a bit of a change up from a top down /comm / control of message perspective.

the soft cap IS the football department. Its success drives almost every other aspect of our revenue.

If you cut (which may be necessary) the last place is in the football department.

On the membership side a lot of those new members were increased contra from sponsorship deals. We could be in for a big hit in 2020 membership wise due to the decreased contribution from NT and who knows what from Jaguar.

Also we would have budgeted for big money from our home MCG games (the last three). Probably cost us a million bucks just there.

2019 has been such a bad year for this club on so many fronts.

Let's hope 2020 delivers.

You think Tomlinson, who had 17 possessions, including several marks, was worse than Finlayson with one possession, gained in the last few minutes of the game. You think May can’t play.

Enough said.

The way Mahoney is wrapping up Elliott, makes me now think he has committed to us.

I'll see your Tollinson and raise you one Finlayson who had one effective disposal.

The vibe I got was that we've made a significant offer to Elliot that he is considering hard. Still think he will stay eventually.

  • PREVIEW: Collingwood

Way back in March we contemplated the possibility of a Demon resurgence after Simon Goodwin’s summer of love. Many issues at the club had seemingly been addressed, key players were returning from injury and a brand new day was about to dawn. We imagined the coach pulling a rabbit out of a hat. The team would roar up the charts, push aside every opponent and make its way to a Grand Final ending in ultimate triumph with Goody and Max holding the premiership cup aloft under a shower of red and blue ticker tape.

We’re back! That was fun. The Mighty Dees’ Season 10 campaign is off toa flying start with a commanding 48-point winover the Western Bulldogs, retaining the Hampson-Hardeman Cup in style. After a hard-fought first half in slippery conditions, the Dees came out in the second half and showcased their trademark superior class, piling on four goals in the third termand never looked back.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
