So from reports this is our new List Manager following Todd Viney moving in to other roles then vacating.

We know about his police background as a detective as well as his footy background, having joined as a recruiter in 2012.

Quote

Lamb, who joined Melbourne as a national recruiting officer earlier this year, had previously been an assistant coach to former Demon, Bulldog and Saint and now Hawthorn assistant coach Luke Beveridge at St Bedes/Mentone.

There, he helped St Bedes/Mentone win consecutive premierships from C grade to B grade, and then A grade.

After that, Lamb moved to TAC Cup side Sandringham Dragons with Dale Tapping, now Collingwood’s VFL coach.

Lamb was also involved in the Vic Metro pathway, working with the futures program, which included Melbourne forward line coach Leigh Brown. He was also a line coach with the Vic Metro under 18s team, coached by former Carlton player Rohan Welsh, which he said was invaluable for his current position.

Have we skilled him in useful tools for the position:
1. Contracts
2. Negotiation
3. Analytics

Clubs are hiring former player managers (see Collingwood with Ned Guy) as they understand the contract and negotiation. St Kilda hired a former Investment banker because he knows contracts, knows how to negotiate outcomes and knows how to interpret data.

Josh Mahoney gets a lot of credit/blame at this time of the year because he's the public face of the club during the trade period but he's not necessarily the main decision maker.

Anyone else got any information or opinions?

  • Demonland changed the title to New List Manager - Tim Lamb?

Don’t trust a Detective, they’re all bloody dodgy.

That aside, he was our national recruiting officer for some time and you’re saying he’s now our list manager? Running on little sleep and trying to make sense of the OP.

I believe Lamb's role is "contract manager" which could be the same as list manager just re-badged, but it also could be that he's not heading up the whole list management team and it's been reshuffled a bit. From what I remember reading, Goodwin and Mahoney were keen to give more responsibility to Lamb as they rated him highly, so would make sense with Viney gone that they've done just that.

Would assume he's been skilled in at least contracts given the title they've given him.

Old news but this is the first time without Todd and this clip from Graham Wright caught my ears when he said 'as has Tim Lamb at Melbourne'.

Have we signed him up to Harvard Business School. Is he reading 'the Art of the Deal'. At a minimum I hope we've got him a copy of Footballistics and an AFL Prospectus. I'd also buy him a ticket to the Sloan Sports Conference and make sure he comes back with a couple of nerds to work with.

Bedford and schache were not from 2023 trade period but yes I agree. It's upsetting to see bedford leave for opportunities whilst sparrow is being gifted games

That was the year before which was also poor.

INS: Schache, Hunter, Grundy

OUTS: Hunt, Bedford, Wiedeman

Lloyd Meek, who was unwanted at Freo that year, would have worked much better for us as a backup to Max than Grundy.  And he would have been good for 6-8 years.

Since ‘21 is the issue. Bedford is thriving,  like the rest

It’s possible Meek didn’t want to play at Casey you know - neither did Grundy after both he and Max failed as KPFs

I’m not a Lamb fan but see nothing wrong with offloading Grundy, Harmes and Jordon. Grundy was an expensive VFL player at the time, Jordon not getting a regular position in the side, and Harmes was down on form.

His job is to improve the list.( our list not Sydney’s )Giving the ins and outs last year he failed badly. We got a lot less for Grundy than we paid to move up 3 places in the draft. And take the kolt instead of Billy Wilson who went at our original pick.
Our trading since 21 has been really poor. This will be the 3rd year we will attempt to get a second ruck in to can give Max a chop out. Not good enough even worse when we were right in the prem window.

He didn’t want to play at Casey( when they were a top VFL side) but was happy to play for Box Hill? We were able to sell the idea to Grundy I’m sure we could have sold it to him.
Blake Acres also left Freo for a packet of chips and would have been a much better get than Hunter.

No arguments from me on Hunter who is now likely not to play AFL again imo

Some of our list decisions have been very questionable with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight

I watch McAdam often at Casey and struggle to see how he is ever going to play AFL regularly - he is the epitome of a talented footballer who only wants to play on “his” terms

I believe the footy department in general needs a refresh. Tim Lamb has been at the club for twelve years and has had a poor record over the past four years in particular as the List Manager. Other FD staff that have been around for a while including Stafford who joined the club in 2013 and Troy Chaplin who joined in 2016 who has done a great job with our backline.

A fresh set of eyes and some new ideas can really benefit a potentially stale playing group. Melbourne needs to make some tough calls and shake things up, starting with looking for a new List Manager.

McAdam for a future second round draft pick, probably in the late 20's, is now looking like an atrocious trade by Lamb. Credit to some posters on DL who at the time who thought we paid too much.

There's a whiff of rebuild about our club at the moment, and not having a second rounder heading into the trade and draft period is disappointing.

Not fussed about the Billings trade as we gave up nothing for him and he played some good games in March.

Fullarton was a big fail considering he was supposed to be out back up ruck when we needed him the most, but yeah whatever.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
