Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

In 2009 we have pick 1 & 2 but don’t interview Dustin Martin because of his dad’s links to bikies and the neck tattoos didn’t help.

Sydney Stack was overlooked by everyone until Dimma asked him to live with their family and ends up selecting him. He knocks out Viney in one of his first games and nearly wins the rising star.

Marlion Pickett is one of the best footballers in the country but gets over looked by everyone because he has been to jail.

Richmond will be the best team of the decade. Perhaps we should look at the best player, back our culture and not worry so much about their background.

Imagine a poor young bloke living with Goodwin.

Yay, another thread turns into Goodwin bashing.  Pity the No D!ckheads rule doesn't apply to this site.

It's all in a bit of jest mate, would recommend taking most of what gets said on here with a grain of salt

Martin didn't get the neck tattoos until after he was drafted.

My mistake, it doesn’t change the fact we were worried about the problems associated with him rather than his footballing ability which is the point of the thread.

I get where you're coming from Wrecker and it's a valid topic, but I'm not sure if that info about Martin is fact, opinion or myth.

Also, there must come a point where a person's character would wreck a club and its culture, regardless of their footballing ability.  In the end, I guess it's a balancing act and an inexact science like all aspects of recruiting and drafting.

Interesting topic

Neil Balme on 3AW this morning spoke about support and the notion of 'team' - they have set their culture in such a way that everyone knows their role and will be supported to do it properly

Let's not forget that Dusty shopped himself around a bit and that Mark Williams was shadowing him everywhere

Anyhoo, it's a balancing act - I don't like robotic players....I prefer flair and fun

Petracca is a classic example of someone who prefers relationships over structure

Yep. Balme was like that at Melbourne until Gutnick booted him out on Radio ?

Balme will never come near this Club again, even though he still has strong relationships with “his” players.

Liam was from a quite unique background  and it was only when he was unfortunately injured and returned to his dysfunctional community that he “went astray”.

One can only speculate what he could have achieved without that happening - interestingly Sean Charles suffered a very similar problem when he had a wrist injury, though not as serious of course as criminal proceedings and jail.

(And of course $cully and Trengove are far more upstanding fine gentlemanly chaps than Mr ?. )

His football ability was rated below that of Trengove and Scully.  I would be surprised if you could find any source from 2009 that rated Martin as the best player in that draft pool.

Scully and Trengove were the consensus picks to that same extent as Rowell and Anderson are this year.

No they weren’t. Scully was always highly rated, Trengove came shooting up after a final in the SANFL.

Yep and we got both of them and the rest is history

Exactly; no point rewriting it.

Richmond were filthy that they were missing out on Scully (a Richmond fan) due to Melbourne’s perceived tanking.  If the Tigers had pick one, they were 100% not taking Dustin Martin.

AFL/VFL history is full of high draft picks who crashed, low draft picks which turned into million dollar footballers. There is no magic formula. Some dudes on this site seem to thrive on featuring Melbourne's draft pick mistakes: as though other teams don't make the same mistakes, as though other teams are not at the mercy of lady luck.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
