Young Blood 2,642 Posted September 20, 2019 Posted September 20, 2019 (edited) I really don't understand all this moaning about Preuss. He's a 24 yr old developing ruckman who started footy at a late age. He's got a huge frame and comes from a rugby background. It might take a bit of time for him to work out the body and whats required of him. From all accounts he played an above average season for Casey. It was always going to be difficult fitting him into the side considering we have the best ruckman in the comp and he's not a natural forward by any means so that along with matchups and his injuries meant he wasn't able to play much AFL. Thats fine. Like most big men especially ruckman it takes longer to develop. I hate to be mean but if you've heard him talk and watched him at training you'll find he's not very intelligent and learning would be a bit slower for him. Thats OK! I'd say all thats been asked of him this season is to continue improving his ruck craft which he has and when he came in to the senior side to mostly bring the ball to ground. His next phase is improving his marking and leading I would assume which this harmless puff piece highlights. Still better then having Dom Tyson floating around. Fork 'em 7,052 Posted September 20, 2019 Posted September 20, 2019 (edited) Pruess isn't the only one who needs to work on his forward craft. I'd like the forwards to work on their forward craft and the mids and backs to work on their delivery. I'd also like the coaching dept to work on a game plan that actually aids them all rather than the mindless bombs inside 50. I feel the players and coaches know they can't hit up targets to save themselves which is why the panic bombs intro the F50 are so regular. Edited September 20, 2019 by Fork 'em 1 Quote
Jaded No More 68,976 Posted September 20, 2019 Posted September 20, 2019 He’s a good “just in case Gawn gets injured” but he’s no second ruck/ resting forward. 2 Quote
DeeSpencer 26,667 Posted September 20, 2019 Posted September 20, 2019 Yeah he had 1 game as the number 1 ruck and did the job, but otherwise was ordinary. I look at Darcy Cameron being available and apparently off the Pies this year and think he would've been a smarter get. But at least we have a back up. The most important quotes were about Preuss working on his professionalism and training standards and not as a forward. If he gets fit and gets his skills up he'll be a better than handy back up who can come in for a stretch of games if Max is out. 1 Quote

Not at this stage but given hard work, time and some decent forward mentoring, who knows. Early to make a final call, IMVHO. 1 Quote

Has potential, needs consistency. Major chip on him as a forward is that he gets run off on the rebound too much. Wondering if that's something good team defense could address? Quote

BAMF 4,479 Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 He is good as a number 1 ruck. Problem is we have an amazing one in his prime already. He has no tank and can't play forward. It was a strange choice for him to want to come to us. We should trade him for a second round pick, use that pick on a young developing ruck and pick up a backup for Max on the rookie list. Or he can ruck at Casey all year unless Max goes down. Quote

He's not ready to take over as a number 1 ruck, teams know that. Hence he's not worth a second round pick. Preuss is the young developing ruck, he's just 24 and monsters the VFL rather than being 21. Interesting.. reported in the Age that Richmond may limit their reserve players TOG in tomorrow's VFL grand final in order to keep them fresh for the AFL final. Puts the VFL comp in perspective. dees189227 12,509 Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 Preuss needs to work on his marking for starters then learn how to play forward and crash packs apart. Quote

It would be a matter of consistency week to week that is unproven IMO. At 24 years old I don't view him as the young developing ruck. I'm also ok with him playing at Casey as insurance. 1 Quote
Pates 9,697 Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 I think he's got potential, Gawn was a fairly late bloomer as well and who better to teach him ruck craft? As for whether he fits into the team as a second ruck on a regular basis, obviously his forward work (marking in particular) needs to improve. Quote

It was good but I wouldn't trust him to back it up week after week. No team chased him hard to be the number 1 because they knew he didn't have the professionalism and consistency to take that leap. He might get it in the next 12-24 months. He's not that young but is still developing. He'll stay as insurance or just maybe he might turn it on as a forward, we can only dream. Quote
Cards13 9,117 Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 Does it matter? Is ruckman the least effective position on the ground? Today was one of the biggest hidings a ruckman has given in an AFL game and his team still lost. Grundy who is at a level of Gawn was so dominant at ruck contests it was embarrassing for “Snorter” Mumford. 73 hit outs to 14...... the game was lost (and almost won again) at the fall of the ball, not the ruckmans skill. Mumford was dragged out of a drug scandaled retirement to be GWS ruck, we’re lucky to have Gawn, Pruess is fine if needed as long as we have the on ballers to compete at the contest. Quote

You could be right. I thought there was another game but can't think of it off the top of my head. I'm Happy to disagree. He's better than a backup and not good enough to be our number 1. He has currency imo and will be wasted at Casey. I have zero faith that he will improve enough as a forward to be much use there. It's ruck or bust. Quote

Draft 2 rucks. 1 18year old, 1 mature backup. Doesnt matter what picks. I'm well aware that this won't happen and that we will go with Pruess. I just think he is good enough as a 1 ruck to get more game time at another club. It was a weird choice to come to us imo. It's also not an opinion that I really feel that strong about. Just my quick thoughts. Quote

Pretty sure the AFL page was "AFL flights and big hits" This trick usually works on Herald sun subscriber articles 1 Quote
dworship 3,343 Posted November 13, 2019 Posted November 13, 2019 Can vouch for this working, the most informative bit of the story wasn't about Pruess though. " Weideman will have a delayed start to the summer after a hip cleanout. " 1 Quote
