Brisbane have officially entered the race for Elliot as just reported by Mitch Cleary.

Do we have any further information as to why the Hawks pulled out.

Possible reasons:

  • Told by Elliott & Co. that they are not in the running (Between Pies & Dees)
  • Know he will re-sign with Pies
  • No longer want him for <insert reason here>
  • Can't afford him with <insert player names here> potentially coming into the team

I believe this is the reason. I also believe it may be due to the money they will be paying Frost. They're confident of getting him, and I believe they couldn't pay both Frost and Elliott what they want. There could also be a higher priority on their list, like Collingwood, they have an abundance of Elliott type players.

This is a huge risk with Elliott. Just been too injury prone. I can smell a disaster

I feel like Mahoney's comments involve things that he wouldn't have said if he wasn't confident about Elliott

"We've got a 3-year deal in front of him", "we think we're a chance"

Just a hunch

He sounded guarded or even cagey about that answer almost like he was going to say "We're not going to discuss potential contracts on the air" and then just muttered the answer out anyway.

My gut feel re: the 3 year deal is that it is 3 years plus option for 4th.

I still think we're the pawn in trying to get a longer contract at the Pies, which I'm fine with as that's what I would do in his situation. If Collingwood can't or don't blink he might take the Demons up on the offer but it's certainly not his preference.

If true and our offer and theirs are similar then we are no chance.

Pfffffft. He may not want to move to Brisbane. Also, MFCSS.

Don't agree with you there, been said several times that he ideally would like to stay in VIC

Brisbane must have heard he is on the move, and decided to try their luck.

Disagree we are no chance against the Lions. We have been chasing him for quite a while and wouldn't be no chance.

Born and Bred. :P

Wikipedia - Early life[edit]

Elliott lived in Dongara, Western Australia before his family moved to Queensland. His father died when he was a teenager and his family moved to Euroa, Victoriawhere he played for the Murray Bushrangers in the TAC Cup. In 2011, he was invited to play two games for Collingwood in the Victorian Football League (VFL).[2]

99% will be in red and blue next year.

Pies salary cap is at the limit, and they have an abundance fo medium and small forwards. He's the exact type of player they can afford to lose. They're just positioning themselves to look like they tried their best to keep him. If they just rushed him out the door their fans wouldn't be happy, as he's a fan favorite and a good footballer. It's smart for them to cash in while they can and get a first round pick as compo.

Elliott came out of the meeting with Pies yesterday and he didn't say 'it was great, I'll be a Pie next year etc'. He walked out and said 'I've got a few days now to explore my options, still hopeful' etc. It was the talk of someone that is 100% gone and couldn't say anything yet as he's still negotiating and didn't want to burn a bridge or commit publicly to his new club until negotiations are done.

Born and bred was in relation to my veil of negativity that shrouds my Demon supporting life.

I can’t see any alternative but to become a Demon.

Im not sure what he is on at the pies, but say it’s 480k a year and pies have offered him another 2 years and maybe a rise to 550k

Dees offer could be 600k a year over 3 so he is 700k better off overall.

Pies can’t match as they still have to retain Grundy and Moore for this year on bigger dollars and players like DeGoey next year.

Should be a no brainer to the MFC

Or after some reflection he could stay at the Pies cause we are a basket case club..

I don’t think we are a basket case club at all.

Crikey, I hope that is a guess...?

FA comp pick assessment made based on all AFL players aged over 25.

"First-round picks are awarded to players who rank in the top 5 per cent, based on the points, while end-of-first-round picks are given for free agents in the 5-15 per cent bracket. Second-round picks ...are for free agents in the 15-30 band. End of second round is for those ranked in the 30-50 per cent group" .afl-s-secret-formula-for-free-agency-compensation

We are offering a 3 year deal for a 27 year old so it must be a huge $ base contract to generate a first round comp pick ie #17.  If the pies get that or end of first round (#20) they are laughing all the way to the bank and won't try to keep him.

I wonder if he is landed whether some folks views of Mahoney will change?

I guess the big question for me now that' it been publicly stated that small forwards are an area of interest is who is plan B on the get a small forward list? would knock down the door of Sam Gray.

I feel like we will miss out on Elliott.

It is a guess. If Ellis is going to GC at 600k and Tigers get an end of first round pick as comp, I'd imagine Elliott contract is roughly the same as that, and therefore end of first round compo. My thoughts above are based on that assumption, but in reality the AFL just makes up rubbish as it sees fit.

Pies will definitely let him go if they get end of first round compo and free up some cap space to retain Grundy, Degoey and Moore (who are all out of contract within 12 months).

Dees offered 750k from what I heard.

Why? Landing a player by offering decent coin and terms does not a good get make. Proof will be in the pudding. If he plays the majority of games next year and beyond and maintains the same or similar output then we can talk.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
