The more I hear about this kid, the more I want to keep 3, take him and hopefully have a good player for the next 10 years. Splitting picks is great except the chances of getting a really good player decrease.

If we nail it with 3 and 8, that is 2 players who should be added, very soon to our best 22. With Langdon and Tomlinson that is 4.

4 best 22 in one year is a fantastic haul and well over the odds.

We need to get it right with these 2 picks.

With 2nd year players in Sparrow, Jordon and Nieta also chances to make it, we are in a good position.

We can then cherry pick another draftee and maybe a DFA or 2 plus some rookies.

"Dandenong Stingrays talent manager Darren Flanigan has identified one player who he feels will be a "bulletproof" choice at this year's AFL draft.

According to Flanigan, the 2019 Stingrays captain will be an extremely clever choice for whichever AFL club opts to select him."

It's very 2004 Hawks drafting too. Let's hope we really smash this draft.

It is a yes for me at 3. 

I think pick 8 will be an odd one. Have a feeling there is someone in draft that may have gone before 22 but not before 10, so they grabbed pick 8. Will be interesting.

Young will be taken with our first pick.

Source: recruiter at another Victorian club. It’s apparently already widely known amongst AFL circles that we’ll be taking Young with our first pick.
 

Unknown yet if we bid for Green, but Sydney will definitely bid for Green if we don’t. 
 

Cant wait to see Young in red and blue commanding the half back line for the next 10 years!

I've had similar thoughts but if Young works out he's going to get 15-20 kicks per game - which is what designated kicking half backs and only a select number of midfielders can do. Salem was at 16.70 last year. The attacking benefits of an elite kick getting more kicks than any other player on the field have to be worth a lot, maybe up to a couple of goals a game if he's lasering it in to the corridor. Then Young's got the size and ability to contribute defensively and composed ball use stops turnovers.

A gun key forward is probably still the most valuable recruit, challenged only by the Dusty/Dangerfield style mid/forward bull and maybe the absolute silkiest 30+ disposal goal kicking mids. Rowell is the gun accumulator/goal kicker, Anderson is the mid/forward star and there's not a highly rated key forward. After that does it matter if you draft an in an under on baller, a wing, a half back, a ruck, a key defender? Isn't a good player a good player?

I can get excited about drafting any player, in any position, who is a potential elite-disposer of the ball. And the footage I’ve seen of Hayden Young tells me he is exactly that.

Young is as worthy as anyone else to go at pick 3.

What is clear is that the top 2 are clear of the pack (at this stage), but Young is indeed a worthy #3. I just hope that Kemp is available at pick 8 (if we hold on to the pick).

Not saying you are wrong, but I am not sure we have decided 100% yet, nor told anyone.

To be widely known among other clubs seems very strange, unless, they all agree Young is the next best player in the draft and they are assuming because they would take him, we will too.

That was a poor pick ahead of Taranto and McCLugage. 

I agree with the concept that pick 3 is probably to high to for a specialist half back flanker, but from watching his highlights on the NAB League app he actually seemed to do quite well in at the clearances when on the ball and up forward.

Highlights as always should be taken with a grain of salt, however the guy looks like he's an elite kick, an above average mark & can win his own ball if presented with a contest & tackle, I think people are obsessing over the half-back tag, he appears like he could play numerous positions.

3 and 8 get the best Dees .. next generation chance which only happens now and again..

3: has to be Young (b/c we are crying out for penetrating attack from the back,  even in Serong highlights no.  17 looked better than no. 2, let Salem loose in mid or forward)

8. Has to be a midfield bull = Kemp (no crumbed at 8 Martin or Gray in PSD)

and both seem versatile.. unlike many current Dees

Stewart: pick 40 (mature age)

Mills: drafted as a midfielder at pick 3

Geary (really?): pick pick 58

Sicily: pick 56

Hurn: pick 13

McGrath: pick 1

Williams: pick 54 in the rookie draft.

 

So I’m not exactly sure what point you’re making in response to concerns about drafting a half back distributor at 3.

Young has always been a midfielder until he went to the Rays.  It was a part of trying to teach him other roles and responsibilities as often happens with really talented kids.  Having seen the boy play since he was 10, coaching against him and knowing him through junior rep cricket as well as footy, I can guarantee that he is a genuinely multifaceted footballer.  His pace is good (not express), he is courageous - going back into packs is not a problem, he's a great mark for his size (can play a bit taller than his 188 cm) and his kicking is elite.  He can find his own ball and is also great on the outside.  He may play some defence, but I think ultimately he'll work between half back and the midfield, like Whitfield.  If we don't take him at 3 then whoever we do take had better be bloody good because they'll be hard pressed to carve out a better career than this bloke will.
