as a matter of interest, did chandler, c wagner, lockhart, dunkley re-sign as rookies? how does it work with the likes of dunkley, who was signed mid-year? does bradtke remain on the cat b rookie list?

presuming so, i think that means we currently have 3 vacancies on our senior list (lewis, maynard, garlett) and three on rookie list (tim smith, kielty, walker)

if we are able to pull off elliott and tomlinson as free agents, and swap what is likely to be pick 22 (after pointy end priority pick and points matching for green from gw$) for landgon, would we have no spots left on senior list?

who remains out of contract? stretch and jkh don't get new contracts, frost for north's second rounder (what will likely be pick 27)?

that'd leave us with three picks in the draft (say 3, 27, 40); do you have to use three, or is it just mandatory three changes to the list?

and either two or three (2, 20, possibly 38) in the rookie draft?

Don't forget we started the season with 39 on senior list so at this stage with have one extra pick that is 4 picks.

Hi I'm new here, Been 16 year member of the Dees, does anyone know why we are not trying to get Zac Jones, has the pace and skills we require and obvious link through his bother can't believe I'm hearing his off to Saints

I'm confident we will sign Frost. We will only need a 3rd draft pick if Elliot doesn't sign, I expect Tomlinson and Langdon to sign.

Apparently we must take 3 from draft, or have you named a rookie upgrade?

Yep, 3 from the draft (though they don't need to be open selections)

Jones has good pace, and has the ability to burst away from packs well, but I agree that too often his skills leave a little to be desired.

Wouldn't have been against recruiting him, but I'd say the Saints are offering much more in the way of cash than we would be able to.

I'd go Gaff again. Trade out anyone other than Oliver from our midfield and get what we need to deal with the Eagles. Need better ball users surrounding Oliver and whilst I like the move for Langdon for what he brings aerobically, he's not going improve our ball skills.

I'd keep Harmes as well. A hard running, goal kicking midfielder who is only going to get better. A real success story for our rookie list too.

Petracca needs to step up next year and cement his spot in the midfield. He has the capacity to emulate Martin IMO, but only if he improves his tank.

That leaves Viney and Gus as players that are tradeable for the right price. Both are potentially really good players, but our midfield is too samey and if we want to improve our midfield, we need to trade out one or two.

Cue Demonland flaming. ;)

Oh and I'd trade pick 3 for Ben King. Thanks very much. ?

I'd do pick 3 for king in a heartbeat.

We can bounce back quickly with a simpler game style built on hard running and cleaner structures, but on a solid defensive 6 and a predictable but dangerous forward line built around two key marking talls, some zippy smalls and Melksham/Fritsch.

King would immediately improve our forwardline. The guy is a beast and his height makes him very hard to defend against. Will explode next year.

I am huge wrap for him also mate. Shares the same traits as Tom Lynch. Add him and Elliot up forward with Fritta and Melk and already its a potent forward line.

We also snag a 12 year key forward.

Make it happen Jason Taylor!

That's not true. You must delist 3 players. If we take all of Elliott, Langdon and Tomlinson it will only leave us with 2 picks in the draft depending on Frost signing.

Today makes me more determined than ever to delist Spargo and Oscar McDonald.  They would be absolute liabilities.

To win the big one, you need pace, toughness and skill. They would not stand up.

Add JKH to that list as well, sadly he is a VFL player at best. should of traded him off to carlton a few years back.

Agree. Jkh is unlikely to be retained and has not taken his chances.  Hard to see how he would add value in the GF.   Already on my list.

Though Spargo and Oscar Mcd would be on Goodys protected species list.

Varcoe and McIntosh are the two I would go after. I’m sure our salary cap is tight. Both would come cheaply and be best 22.

I This is for Werridee

We should have started off loading them two years ago, maybe one by one each year?

WERRIDEE and norm.  What a meeting of minds.

In terms of the trade period, what will be will be.

Langdon and Elliott would be my priorities. Two big fixers for our system.

Pick 2 should be retained for someone like Anderson.

Tomlinson not so sure. Only really looked out for him in his last two games, and that’s probably unfair sample for me to judge.

What would excite me though would be if we are able to get AVB and Joel Smith fit and firing. They would be like 2 best 22 recruits in my view. AVB adds so much to our side and I think Joel will perfectly compliment Langdon on the other wing.

If we were able to get KK fit and firing would be an absolute bonus, but not hopeful there.

Top 8 for sure next year.

I think Petracca needs to step up and hence he should play midfield . If we cannot get Anderson then I would get Kemp. I would trade both Viney and Brayshaw for Gaff plus a third rounder.

Travis Varcoe?

Hell no. His best was 5-10 years ago. We don't need more inconsistent forwards who float in and out of games.

McIntosh I'd be interested in, though. Might free up Salem off half-back.

You wouldn't trade either? I would.

Not both for Gaff, but I'd trade them both for different prices.

The suggestion of both for Gaff was crazy IMO

If we look at the premiers and their player mix I can see some glaring gaps in our list and team. Roos wanted big bodied mids but IMO the game has changed and 1 or 2 at most and the need is for speed.

Consider these 6 players from yesterday and their height" Prestia 175 cm, Short 178 cm, Rioli 179 cm, lambert 178 cm, Bolton 175 cm and Baker 173 cm. They are all quick and mobile and kick well. That is 6 players under 180 cm and they win the flag in fact 2 out of 3 and a near miss last year. Also note they play 2 ruckman. MFC have Viney, Spargo, JKH & Bedford under 180

The target is pace, pace and more pace whoever they may be

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
