for anyone saying pick 3 for king... we need to use a first rounder this year. gahhhh

Which is why I think we’re looking to split.

If we can get pick 6 for instance, and another late first rounder, we could send 6 (and change if needed) to get whoever we may be targeting, but retain the late first rounder to satisfy our requirement.

Alternatively we could use 2 first rounders this year & give ourselves flexibility for the coming years if we wish to bundle current & future picks to facilitate trades.

We don't have to use a first round pick this year. We just have to use at least one in the next 2 years as it's a rolling 4 year period.

Apparently we don't have to use a first round pick this year as we used 2 first round picks in 2015.

So according to the rolling method we've used 2 first rounders in the last 4 seasons (2015 - 2018)

So we're in the new cycle of 4 years.  Google will point the way through the various links

It's too complicated to explain but the bottom line is that we do not have to go to the draft with a first round pick (this season) But we do have to use a first round pick next season (?)

Phone only here but there are links (via google) that can be posted up if anyone else has the time.

My gut feeling is that we can go either way ... i.e. we've got our eye on a prospect at pick 3 but we might use the pick in other ways if the right configuration came our way.

We need to get this one right, fingers crossed it's the start of our rise up the ladder?

Well you don't necessarily nail picks so we need to get lucky if we use pick 3 on a prospect.

And that's all.they really are - prospects.

The so-called experts say otherwise but they get it wrong a lot.  Not that they'd ever admit it ... too busy evaluating the next batch.

For the above reasonong I'd swap the pick for proven talent.  And Ben King looks to be more than just a prospect now.  Pick 3 probably wouldn't be enough and he may have no interest in coming to us anyway.  Who knows?

Essendon is in a similar scenario to Hawthorn and Melbourne under the new trade conditions.

All three clubs drafted two players in the first round in 2015, but the Hawks and Demons haven't used one since and neither has one this year.

They can do as they wish with their first-round pick in the 2019 NAB AFL Trade Period, including offloading a future one, because they have used at least two in the preceding four-year period.

However, like the Bombers, unless they trade in extra first-round selections this year or next, they will have to start using those picks in 2020 until they satisfy the four-year rolling requirement.

That trio of teams will have used just one first-round pick or fewer through the 2019 draft – assuming they don't acquire any extras – once their two from 2015 drop off.

The confusing thing is working out when the 4 year rolling period beings and ends. I would have thought that we had to use one this year as we haven't used any since 2015. Turns out that we don't and that the 2015 period counts within the four year period.

2015: 2 picks

2016: 0

2017: 0

2018: 0

Be great if we could get Ben King, hope we have at least asked?

All we need now is for gc to agree to trading King, and King wanting to come to us.

On sen Mathew Lloyd was saying he coached both the boys during their school side, he said both were mad saints supporters and he thinks Ben will only play for the saints if he comes back home.

I can't see how both can play in the same forward line together?

Max has also signed until 2022, no doubt on generous but not over the top money. But if Ben has a great season he'll get offers of huge money, hopefully not Tom Boyd level stupidity but it could be close to the 1M a season. Will the saints have the salary cap after their splurge this year? I doubt they'll want to pay him that to play CHB.

And if Max is the better footballer then all of a sudden you have to pay him 1M+ on 2023 on.

Essendon banking the draft picks and cash from selling Daniher then offering it up to the Suns seems likely to me. The romance of playing with your brother might not be worth another million or so in the contract.

ugh! i thought this was all confirmed prior to the trade period. so freaking confusing. ok whatever. what a messed up system. just keep it simple afl! way to alienate the fans.. surely the rule is to reduce the examples of clubs not having an up and coming players (like us currently), by insisting that clubs must utilise first round picks.. 2015 was a lifetime ago!

How do you bank draft picks?

They admit it, in a round about kind of way after the fact. Dustin Martin?

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k
