Is that the first time weve won after a bye in a while??

TMAc deserves credit for winning us that match, but boy did he have some stinking moments out there today. His best and worst are so far apart and today both were on full display. Dr Jeykell and Mr Hyde sorta stuff. He kills me at times.

He persisted today and to his credit, came good when it mattered.

Yes Tommy had a fair few possessions in the first 3 quarters but had stuffed up just about every possession and then at the start of the fourth he stuffed a kick forward again and I noticed him yelling a response to some fans on the northern stand Punt Rd flank. I thought that’s about it he is mentally shot. However from that point on he put on a clinic of contested marking, goal kicking and competitive ruck work. Just like we thought he could do. One difference today I think was Tom spent a lot of time on the wing and ruck that he was able to get into the game and finally it clicked.

Thats interesting. Sometimes i think we just need to be more angry as a team. Forget all this laughing and team jokes before the game starts.

Does 2017 count?

We came out looking the goods post-bye before being ravaged by injuries and a horrible schedule.

Seems a long time ago now Sku. I do vaguely remember us winning one. So good to get a win today, hope you saw it.

Yep more “Angry” Pills ? i agree, without being violent. No point getting suspended or giving away free kicks. But Anger at being “almost good enough”, rather than the winners.

Yep, I saw it. I was sitting on the members balcony and it was directed at fans in what would have been the old ‘red seats’ where our old player race was. I presume a fan gave him some feedback that he didn’t like. His disposals were all very poor and he is lucky that he somehow turned it on when it counted

I wasn’t a fan, but i have been rapt with his last 2 games for us. Happy to eat Humble....

We've embarrassingly lost games that we should have won with the opposition 2 rotations down so I'll take the win today.

Good win today! Behind at every change but showed real character to pull it off. I don’t care where you are on the ladder is there anything better than going to the g on a Saturday afternoon and getting a win!

Plenty of good performances. For the first time in ages we all had to leave good ones out of the DL voting. Viney was immense today and I thought Gawn was serviceable in the first half before really taking over in the second. Harmes sacrificed his game a bit to slow down Fyfe who was just rinsing us in the first half.

Jay Lockhart, I just love a kid that comes in and still has the head bobble. No complications just see ball, get it, kick it towards goal through the big sticks. Sam Frost is working his way into some rich form, seemed to go pretty hard at it today, but could also just be his haircut.

I definitely saw a turn in confidence and willingness to go with the first option more today. Ok we benefited from Freo losing man power but we did what we needed to do and transitioned the ball very well in that last quarter. Bravo Dees, let’s build on this!

Fyfe is ordinary in defensive transition and I was hoping Harmes would give him more to think about, but at least he got one goal on him.

Fyfe is see ball, get ball and a brilliant marker. I wouldn't have him in the top 10 players in the league, but some people love him.

In terms of switching, I was thinking more between the backs. Often a Melbourne back would intercept mark or receive a mark at half back. We'd have May, Hore or Salem set up for the initial switch, which would then release to a quick running player in space like you note Baker or a half forward. Problem was, we didn't have the confidence to hit it.

Frost's kicks are too loopy and only May can really kick low and flat to enact the switch. The kicking from Lever, Salem and even Fritsch will be handy in this respect if we set up for the switch. We're far too predictable otherwise.

Yep Fyfe is the weak defensive link in Freo’s midfield but usually a tagger sits on him so it’s irrelevant. Agree about Harmes, thought he looked flat all game, maybe a virus?? Took until the last to make Fyfe chase him.

Fyfe’s such a beast, but I think he’s close to 10th than 1st. He’s a freak in the air and at stoppages but otherwise like Oliver but without the younger legs and upside (hopefully).

The backs seem reluctant to switch because they don’t trust the mids and half forwards to win the spread race outside. Better spread and they’ll be more encourage.

May needs to pick up the tempo to then use the ball to his potential. He’s still dump kicking every now and then, which is understandable given he’s played in perennially crap teams. His ability to slide through traffic for a big man is wonderful and was on display in the last term especially.

Cant have it all ways! But I saw the Remnants of what we were like in the finals last year. GROWING BELIEF and playing with some Abandon.. but Strangely more belief in the way defense was set up..

May was enormous, so too Frosty, Now just get LEVER back and  Hnmmmmm

Still many deficiencies but with Sage recruiting, development of existings Et AL we might be Ok In 2020

take out the howlers ?? which century will that happen

4.2 v 4.1  well have to give that to you eh

only got in front once opposition vanished off the bench. You really going to argue otherwise ?

you're being over harsh methinks. there was quite a lot to like despite the usual melbourne errors

margin in game only ever got out to 3 kicks and that was for a short time. most of game was only one or two kicks in it. our endeavour, effort and hardness stood out all game.

Pretty happy with the game all things considered.  The tweaks to the gameplan are good.  I loved seeing us using the short pass to a leading player to advance the ball rather than just bombing it down the line for a stoppage.  It did cost us a few goals due to poor skills, but that will improve as the players get used to it.  I also loved seeing how quickly we switched the ball when we got it right.  One play in particular where we'd bombed into the 50 twice only to have the ball come straight back out, Jones used his head, hit a quick pass to CHB which then went out the other side and resulted in an uncontested mark in the f50.  We only got a point, but the play was beautifully executed.

I love the look of May.  He's a wrecking ball in the contest and has a beautiful kick.  His presence and leadership in the backline is already having an impact.  If we can get games into Lever as well I think we'll see some drastic improvement there.

Frost as well.  He's loving playing as the third tall.  He gets to use his pace and leap to intercept and run away from people.  His kicking is a bit of a problem at times, but he just set up so much play today.

I am still bothered by our i50s though.  We were better today, but still scored from less than 30% of our entries.  That lack of efficiency is still our biggest issue.  Hopefully Rawlings can figure it out.

What’s with peoples love affair with maxy he was Terrific again and is probably out most consistent player but he makes terrible mistakes like most the team yet nobody seems to notice.

viney was by far our best player today and the best on the ground

Yes of course he does make mistakes . You see if he didn't he would be perfect. You can play him at full forward and he wouldn't drop the mark or miss goals would he. Just kick it to him. However they all make mistakes and the ball gets turned over.

Gawny  makes less mistakes  and we give him the benefit of the doubt not like some who don't learn from their's they just keep making them.

Without Gawn we would struggle as a team he is  good at his craft and vital to our cause as we all noticed in 2017.He is the vital piece of the team.

Viney was hand fed well today. Watch the replay. He had a good game but made his fair share of mistakes but the good outweighed the bad today. Please be more constructive with your post.  I won't be answering any of your questions again.

It is a blend which I don't often have but enjoying it. Of course winning probably adds to the flavour.

Season average marks: 83.6

Versus the Dockers: 106

It was the most noticeable tweak.

Exactly what i thought. After the first we had he way more uncontested marks than them. Played much slower

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
