Garlett makes errors but he gets the effing pill. Which exactly no other player in our forward line does. Only natural forward down there.

If we are tanking, fine, drop him. If we want to win then play him.

And, IF you want to Win,  as you say,  in 2020,  2021... what do you do ?   Play him now,  or play younger ones,  to see if they are worth keeping,  or giving some others,  experiences for their futures ?

Maybe Garlett  (29-9mths),  will play this week..?  but IMO winning from here on,  means little,  when Its as obvious as the nose on peoples faces, that we need certain types of players,  to actually improve, and improve quickly.

We have  'May'  (27-4mths),   for around 3 or maybe 4 Yrs,  from this season.

So IMO,  we will have a window of time to do some magic,  from next season and on,  until 2022ish...  with this current List.   And our current crop of Key Mature players.

TMc  (26-8mths)

Gawn,  (27-5mths)

Jetta,  (29-3mths)

Hibbo,   (29-4mths)

So should we just keep eyes lowered ?   Or should we raise the sights,  for next year and on, in the know that we are lacking for certain types of players...?

Ins: Salem,  Hore , Lever & ANB (not totally convinced on Lever)

Outs: JKH & Sam W (both lucky to play lets be honest & not ready yet) Oscar M, Charlie Spargo (needs continuity & a good block of footy at Casey & injury free run)

Hannan (looked totally lost in first 1/2 but goodies love child so I expect him to stay)

May: Not ready & needs to play a couple more good games to put his hand up. Needs to find the fire in the belly.....

KK: see above

Lewis: make way for the future

Lockhart: Hasn't found the footy the last couple of games he's played & with injury interuptions a couple of weeks for Casey will do him the world of good. (a good find for the dees)

I'm not going for the reason above and as a protest against Goodwin and the insipid culture of the club and this playing group.

Also if suggest not risking lever and may now that there is nothing to play for. Why not ease them back over three or four weeks?

Just because you are lacking spirit don't deprive kry players a  chance of playing snd contributing to a possible win in a marquee match!

You do realize that tanking is pointless now that the automatic priority pick has been withdrawn. If you look at the history of picks 1 - 5 over the past ten years you will also see that it doesn't really matter if you finish eighteenth or thirteenth. Mostly they're all good players at the pointy end and it's just a raffle who turns out the best. Often pick 5 is better than pick 1 and so on.

You get nothing now if you tank for the wooden spoon.

I do realise

my point - poorly made - is it would be better to finish 14-17 than 9/10. Probably . With our luck we’d have a choice of future Hawkins or future flower and pick future Toumpas

finishing 13th and below is a slight advantage both in the draft choice and also in the draw for 2020. In theory the bottom 6 do not play the top six twice. Both Richmond and the Bulldogs won the GF from this position.

May did what Oscar cannot - straight swap.

Salem immediate in if his gastro has settled, as is Hore.

Would think there are a few who could go out, possibly Wagner, JKH, Spargo, Stretch.  They could all make a case for another week, too.

Weids stays in.  He did enough to warrant a recall.  TMac needs something (a rest, a foot rub, to be dropped??)

Corey Wagner did well at Casey, but has claims behind Salem and ANB I would think.

Hannan stays in. Didn’t do much, but hopefully will be better for the run.

Baffled by the rushing lever back argument. We have been very conservative and waited the full 12 months. 2 games at vfl and a week off.

You think there is less chance to re injure his knee at vfl level on dodgy grounds?

I'm always amused at number of posters who want a player's return from injury delayed another week based on no insight. It's like scans, GPS results and the player's conversation with the medical team are all valueless. How would we know whether any player's treatment and return date are either aggressive or conservative?

How is any match marquee when you sit 16th, can't make finals and have failed miserably on a season with so much expectation?

This QB game is no more important now than the following weeks if it means May and Lever can ease themselves back and gain more conditioning before the intensity of an AFL game. May moreso with his injury.

I suspected there would have to be at least one fool suggest Frost be dropped. If Frost were to be dropped, which won’t happen by the way, there would never have been a player dropped previously that has come off such a solid bank of games. Last night he soundly beat Tex Walker, a 400 career goal kicker, and you want him dropped. WTF.

Frost could be a real asset with Lever and May back. He's the perfect guy to play on second talls or, where required, mediums like DeGoey, Dustin Martin etc. who are too strong/explosive for anyone else in our backline. Despite his occasional brain fades he adds a totally different dimension to our backline and we always look more exposed when he's out of the side.

My views on his return are form based. He has not demonstrated the ability to run out a full match and play to the required standard. I fully anticipate that he will return to form so it boils down to a question of 70% game time at AFL level where he may struggle or the same or more at VFL level to see if he has touch.

As the season is done and dusted it's rather irrelevant but I don't envy him returning in a "big match" and being lambasted by supporters because he's not on the top of his game.

The best defences in the league all share the same thing in common: They've played together alot. We have the chance to play all of our first choice defence except 1 for the first time. We should be doing it. Sure we can't get Jetta back for a month or 2 but getting everyone else playing together is still important for building a solid foundation for next year and beyond.

There could be some teething problems getting this defence functioning smoothly and I'd rather we deal with that in this season rather than next.

Harmless exercise in mental flexibility, actually. It could never happen, anyway. Nevertheless, thanks for the expert advice.

Just as Roos would hope for, build the defence back up with reliability and a barrier mindset (Jetta is critical to this) and then move on to other field preparations for non-defenders. These two areas could be addressed simultaneously, in fact.

Oscar Baker is the best recruit we have had in a long time outside the high picks. Looks all the world like a 200 gamer.

Don't laugh but watching Oscar reminds me very much of a young Brendan Goddard. He is tall, balanced, quick and can kick the ball and hit a target. I remind the group that he was part of the Brisbane academy so they obviously saw something in him. His drop from there coincided with his mom's illness, so maybe it wasn't ability that saw a dip in his form. He may be the best pick up in recent times

100% agree. He's a smooth mover and the type of player we haven't had for a while. He is earning his position at the moment, but even if he has a slight drop off we just have to keep playing him to build his experience for next season.

I'd love to see him play on Brad Hill when we play the Dockers to learn a thing or two and see where he needs to get his tank to the level of.

Got to admit, his movement is quick but it is also cat-like smooth, stops and turns at will, moves on with increasing acceleration. Big hopes for this kid, and he is very like the early Goddard in this regard. He is not as tall, just lean and mean. He is the ideal flanking midfielder of the future, who would relish outside handball receives, moving the ball at will as even dear old Frosty can do from time to time. His pace, positioning and head-up penetration would suit feeds from the likes of Jetta and Salem. We may well be on a winner, here.

I thought of Isaac Smith. But whether I was just dreaming that I hoped he would becomes like Smith or whether I thought he actually reminds me of him is more difficult to discern.

When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
