With the consensus top 2 being best mates, and player retention an issue, it makes sense to gift the top 2 to GC. It has worked well at Brisbane. They desperately need it, and then some more off-field support to boot. The only case for giving them pick 2 is that they aren't a viable football club without it, in which case you have to ask if they are a viable football club with it? Would be making an absolute mockery of the competition given their list and results are both better than when Melbourne and Carlton were knocked back for a priority pick after 2 win seasons. If they really want pick 2 to get the best mates in together and fix player retention there's a very easy solution - they can trade Ben King (who sounds desperate to get out of their immediately) to us for pick 2. If we aren't interested in that straight up they can add Izak Rankine, Ben Ainsworth or Charlie Ballard for our future first. Or Bowes, or Martin, or Sexton, or Fiorini, or Powell, or Weller, or Lukosius in some deal. Compare those names to the list Roos took over at Melbourne, they are miles ahead. They have a stack of talent. Giving them even more in the hope they all stick is the exact reason PP's were taken out, teams can get it right and then they rocket to the top. Sliding them extra salary cap room in ambassador payments and having then nab a few handy free agents or good solid B grade players is the way to fairly turn them around with the young players they have already and pick 1. 5 1 Quote

Lord Travis 10,819 Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Lewis Taylor from Brisbane could be a good target, as he's out of favour this year at the Lions and would be cheap. He's no star, but he provides exactly what we ned - outside run and ability to hit the scoreboard. Could be had for a 3rd or 4th rounder and be an upgrade on depth at worst. We need to retain pick 2/3 in this draft and take a gun midfielder. I'd also be keen to see the club trade our future first rounder for one of two different options: One - trade it to Gold Coast for Ben King and play him as a KPF for the next 10 years. Two - trade it to one of the clubs with a pick between 5-10 in this draft. This would give us pick 2/3 this year (gun midfielder) and either another top 10 talent such as Serong/Ash/Flanders/Young or a tall forward in Ben King. So net result is a gun mid + either a highly rate tall (play him as KPF) or another top 10 talent (preferably Serong to add more juice to our forward half). We've seen this year at Port what bringing in multiple highly rated kids can do. Rozee, Duursma and Butters have added a lot to their club already and have long careers ahead of them. 4 1 Quote

Interesting... watch Sydney call for medical retirement for Buddy and general salary cap relief (the equivalent of the old COLA). For Joe D it could be a good thing to get out of the local fishbowl and ply his craft in relative obscurity. Quote

Ted Lasso 19,586 Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 the trades i'd be looking at would be Pick 3 & 21 to the Fremantle Dockers for Brad Hill, Ed Langdon, pick 9 Pick 9 to the GCS for Ben King if he indeed wants out. Future first rounder - appeal given the chance it's a pick 1-4 for a 2019 first rounder to use in the draft. even if we have to include something to get it over the line. 1 Quote

Yes, we have to use a 1st rounder this year or next. I like your suggestions, think we'd have to sweeten the King trade further. Do you know if a club can trade their current 2nd, 3rd or 4th round picks after trading their 1st rounder? I thought i remember reading this was not permitted. Not sure. Quote
Deespicable 2,886 Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Obviously we'd love a quality key forward but I suspect we will have to just hope we get lucky with one late in piece - especially given we have already used our past two early picks on talls - Lever and May. Petty's rise in past month has taken a bit of pressure off in this area as well. So it's outside run and a small forward that need addressing to me. Pick 3: Assuming the Suns get a priority pick and steal Noah Anderson from us, then the next best player for pick 3 is listed as Caleb Serong. He was sensational in the game I saw when he played Vic Metro and would waltz into our line up on a forward flank. He's a tad smaller than six feet, which worries me (see mid-year review) but he's got that bit of mongrel that tells me he'll end up at North if we don't take him. Pick: 21: Ed Langdon - He should solve our outside run problems and at 24 and 183cm, he'll come straight in on a wing. The only issue is whether Freo wants more than our second rounder and I can see this being a lengthy battle. We may have to give them our third rounder as well - I am reluctant for us to give them our 2020 second rounder as well, unless we get their second rounder back and that won't happen, unless they are very cocky about their chances for next season. Other picks 2x tall forwards - Obviously these will be highly speculative, but we have to take a risk on a couple 1x pacey forward - This becomes two if we end up with Anderson after all and don't take Serong. 1 x tough midfielder who has been unlucky at previous drafts. 1x tough, pacey medium defender - we have to start preparing for life without Jetta and Hibberd. 1x indigenous talent - with Garlett and maybe JKH gone and Jetta close to retiring, we have to start grooming a player who has a few tricks. Bedford has them but is just too small. All up I have 8 inclusions, which is why some big calls on fringe players will have to be made. 1 Quote

TheoX 1,222 Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 No trading pick 2 please. Annoying to see how good King looks at GC after we gifted them pick 6 for an injury prone unprofessional player that really should've been a free agent. 3 Quote

Sorry as much as this might make some kind of sense on a clinical purely logical list management perspective, it would absolutely rip the heart and soul out of the MFC culturally if it wasn't a move 100% instigated by Jack and even then I think it would still reek. It's quite different trading a party boy No.1 draft pick types in Jack Watts and Jesse Hogan who gave the impression of only being 60% committed at times, compared to your club captain, favorite father son who runs through brick walls bleeds red and blue for the club. 6 Quote

I see it the opposite, the MFC would have the opportunity to move on from sentiment and become the ruthless sporting organisation it needs to be, if a player isn't in the best side, best mix for the way we want to play, we move them on. look at the Hawks, they've had no problem moving on heart and soul players in the pursuit of improving their side. Jack is a good player, but i think we've seen the best he's going to be, and our side looks better without him in it, so i think we should take the emotion out of it and make the brave decision. instantly show the list that noone is safe, you have to perform or you're on the chopping block and start building the tough, ruthless professional sporting organisation this club has never been. Roosy did it moving on Grimes who was a heart and soul player. 1 Quote
Hunt29 297 Posted August 6, 2019 Posted August 6, 2019 I’d say if King was on the table saints would throw their first at GC to reunite the brothers. So we’d have to part with pick 2/3 which would rule out a downgrade. Quote

The centre line unit functions better without him in it - and I don't see a certain place for him elsewhere on the park if he isn't part of the centre team. Quote
