This messy trading of picks situation isn’t ideal. If we keep not using first round picks we would end up with a list that will one day drop off the proverbial cliff and never recover. We may not finish this low again for a decade (let’s hope), so if we don’t use pick 2 in the draft we better get an absolute guaranteed star with it.

I'm starting to doubt that we'll trade it. (For the record I think it will more likely be pick 4 or 5 depending on StK/Syd games).

I always thought they'd go hard for Hill and maybe trade back 4/5 to 9/10 for him but freo losing so much lowers that value, and it by all reports we don't seem to be going after Hill at all.

So outside him I don't know who else they would chase that is going demand more than pick 20.

I believe we need MEN not boys and EXPERIENCE in bucket loads and so with picks 2, 20, 38, 56 etc.....

Trade pick 2 (2517 points) to Lions for picks 16, 19 (2115 and either 44 worth 362 or Cutler, my preference)

16 For Jack Martin from Suns with something back in 3rd

19 for Zak Jones from Swans (or Papley) with something back in 3rd

20 for Ed Langdon  from Freo with something back in 3rd

Buy on the meat market..

Jamie Elliott from Pies $400k for 3 yrs

Thomlinson from Giants $600 k for 5 yrs ( or Patton from Giants for crumbs)

Dan Butler from Tigers for 38

Alex Keith from Crows for two 3rd rounders or Stretch and ANB

Go to draft with 48, 59, 77,

2020 round one..

Jetta May Lever

Frost Keath Salem

Langdon Z Jones Thomlinson

Martin TMac Melksham

Fritsch Weed Elliott

Gawn Viney Oliver

Bench... from N Jones, Butler, Trac, Harmes, Hibberd, Hunt, Hore, AVB, J Smith, Petty, Hannan, OMac.....

Gone... ANB, Stretch, JKH, Lewis, Garlett, J Wags, KK

Don't mind the thinking, but I reckon we could get into GWS easier and they have Essendon's first round pick too. So at present we'd trade 2 for picks 12 & 13 plus they throw in one of Bonar or Patton or Zac Langdon. They will want the trade more than Brissy as they have an academy kid who's projected to go top 5. Then I'd keep 12 and use it on the best available and throw 13 around for the likes of Martin/ZJones/Ed Langdon/BHill (plus extras where needed).

Also I reckon you missed Brayshaw in your team above!

Kemp isn't slipping to the second round.

His injury isn't a long term concern. Only players with injuries of that matter would slip from a possible top-5 to 2nd round.

Agreed, I thought that a slide that far would be fantasy-land, but my wondering is about whether a dip as far as say 11-14 could conceivably happen, Jake Lever style.

Years ago we traded away pick 2 and missed Josh Kelly.

If we do the same this year, history will repeat as Anderson is every bit as naturally gifted as Kelly. Do we really want to make that same mistake? No offense to Salem, but I’d rather a crack at a potential superstar than a average-good player again. Our list needs more young elite talent. We haven’t draft any elite young talent for 4 years now, they’ve all been battlers and role players.

It is a conundrum. We agree absolutely that the team needs some genuine dominant creative players far more than it needs an extra 'acceptable' role-player here and there.

I think the wounds of top draft picks of the past have me reluctant to put all that hope on one pick right at the pointy end. You can quite reasonably point to missing out on Kelly (and Bontempelli two picks later for emphasis), and it is also fair for me to shudder remembering our own history of top-4-pick mediocrity, and point to Boyd, Billings, Scharenberg, Kolodjashnij and Aish from the same top-end picks of 2013.

So, my perspective is, if we can manipulate our way to two very good (e.g. 8 & 13) picks and use them to take the kind of naturally gifted players who slip a little through injury like Kemp or a question mark like Cripps fitness or Fyfe's size, or even just someone underestimated like Heppell or Docherty.

I'm also of the opinion that we'll somehow claw our way up a couple of slots, back ahead of Carlton and the Swans, and pick 4 doesn't have the grandeur of pick 2 in this draft.

Having said all that, I totally respect that anyone confident of grabbing the next Kelly or Walsh would vomit at the idea of passing it up.

Keep pick 2 or 3. Not negotiable.

If GC get both 1st and 2nd picks in the draft, would you still be tempted to bring in Brodie Kemp even with him going down with an ACL? @spirit of norm smith

A number of lower profile players on this list who would help in areas of deficiency.

Shai Bolton is starting to translate his talent into decent AFL performance, wonder if he could be tempted?

Bonner would be a good get without costing much at all.

I have been keen on Bolton as a trade target for about 12 months but hes getting games now so will be harder to move. You would think one of the Rich smalls could be squeezed out with Butler the one currently not getting game time and OOC.

For those who were keen on Sam Day he has re-sign with the GC today....

If they’re holding onto players, no priority pick required?

FWIW I think they will get one, just an end of first round pick.

Sam Day isn't in the same ball park as Lynch or May. They were big losses to the Suns.

Unless it is Coniglio I want to keep pick 2. I hear it is top 2 then a big drop to the next tier.

Thoughts on Liam Baker from the Toiges?

I read a few clubs are circling and asking the question as he weighs up his future. Been shifted to the backline the last couple of weeks due to Richmond’s depth up forward.

Would definitely take him for the right price and either play him as a small forward or groom him as a small defender to be our back pocket post-Jetta.

If it was 3rd round is definitely do it. 2nd round would be too much considering he’s not proven like say Melksham and Hibbert were, and Langdon and Hill are.

Well. It looks like we now know exactly where we will finish on the ladder.

Very odd, on percentages we are effectively three wins ahead of the suns but two wins behind the blues.

Baker or Bolton have been spoken about on the forum this year and when getting a look at both of them on friday, i realised we're no chance. They both look like the kind of nuffies that could only ever play for Richmond or Collingwood due to clubs having a No DH policy. They would probably slack off under Goodwin anyway.

Yep and we only have one game left we can potentially win which is the Swans game. Pies and Tigers will rip us a new one and North in Tassie with an interim coach trying to get a permanent job won’t be easy either.

Yep, me too.

Would be surprised and very angry if the GC got a priority number one. Geez, Rankine a number 3 pick for them last year has not played AFL because of injury. He should be up and about next year. He will likely be a gun. There would be 4, 5, 6 or 7 young players at GC not getting a game that we would love to have on our list. Its simply not kids they need its mature guns. Maybe the AFL should fork out big for a couple of guns to go to GC with compensation for clubs? It will cost big to do this.

Priorities will not work. It will just mean there will be lots of round 1 picks running around in the NEAFL.

Cant see us finishing higher than third last. Probabilities are with second last because of our lousy %. I would use pick 2 on the best player available. Anderson sounds good. Can play inside and has class. Having said that I would not be surprised to see a trade of pick 2 for later 1st rounders as we did for the deal that landed Salem. Under AFL rules I believe we have to use a first round pick this year. Depends whether we have our eye on players expected not to go to early in the first round.

Great to see Gold Coast playing well and denting their PP aspirations.

Beating Essendon would also be a nice little sweetener. My Essendon supporting friend is currently losing his [censored] in our footy chat. He called his club weak and pathetic. What a softy! ?

They're fulfilling their finals-filler fate by landing in an away final to get monstered by GWS

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
