The 2019 Mid Season Draft

As I understand we have one spot available for the up coming mid season rookie draft if we decide to place Aaron Nietschke on the long term injuries list.  

Who could be on our radar? An article on the afl website listed 50 potential draftees,  out of that list a few names interest me :

Nathan Freeman (Frankston VFL) 

Cody Hirst (Eastern Ranges) 

Mitch Riordan (Dandenong Stingrays ) 

Liam McBean (Glenelg SANFL) 

Frank Anderson (Northern Blues VFL) 

Hugo Munn (Sturt SANFL) 

Corey Rich (Frankston VFL) 

Tyrone Smallwood (Claremont WAFL) 

Adam Tipungwuti ( NT Thunder NEAFL) 

I think a ready to go small forward, fast midfielder or a key forward would add to our list

Does the draft go in the same order as per the pre-season draft?

I fully expect a Mick Warner article postulating that we're tanking in order to get our hands on a prize rookie.

Liam McBean 202cm, 94kg, 24 yo forward used to be on Richmond's list. 

FWIW, recently kicked 9 in a SANFL game against Adelaide's reserves. According to that reputable source Wikipedia, "he had Darcy Fogarty matched up against him and made 'The Fog' his women and bagged a lazy 9 goals on"

There is no secret that MFC have more than a few needs & if things don’t turn expect a huge review of list & potential movement of some expendable “assets”..

1-2 needs that can be addressed in the inaugural mid season draft, with genuine upside to get ahead on a few that will potentially selected in Nov Draft. Below are targets that are currently under the MFC recruitment watch and 1-2 speculative picks that some keen observers feel SHOULD be:

 

= 1) Dillon O’Reilly (WAFL):

A Genuine Key FWD Prospect that has the potential ceiling to kick BAGS. Clean as can be, mobile at ground level due to being perfect modern fwd size (193cm) & is a great potential foil for what we have currently as he is very diff to Weids, Smith’s & TMac. This kid is ready to go & I prey that the MFC somehow get their hands on him - S/O Stephen O and has same sort of composed tough & contested  nature of his old man, ball either gets plucked or grounded just doesn’t get outmarked - Mature 19yo that seems to have developed quicker than many imagined initially, was seen as having low ceiling which has been re-assessed in a BIG way!!! 

(undoubtedly the equal best player MFC could most use on list right now & more so with eye on future & FWD stocks, impo)

=1) Marlion Pickett (WAFL): 

Huge buzz about with Marlion now backing up what he’s delivered prev which is what recruiters want to see. Instant injection to MFC midfield rotation for mine, he’s a Tim Kelly clone that is perhaps a step quicker outside and half step slower inside but one that many clubs will be after if he continues his progression in off field and prep areas. X Factor Dees desp need & has low risk benefits as at worst he’d be a 10 week trial at best a 150 game JET!!!

 

2) Muhammad Saad (Coburg VFL):

Bit of a left field one here but make it known he’s on numerous radars.. Absolute raw electric pace that can even make his big bro look a step slow in first 5 steps - Also stands 10cm taller which adds to his repertoire. Has taken big strides in his reading of game & midfield fitness with time in middle this season - Can butcher it at times but if used correctly many think he can be a real weapon! Could be DEADLY as outside mid/wing & like Hunt - would play better in a side that has more than 1 speedster to use in tandem and link in bursts.

 

3) Sam Lowson (Coburg VFL):

A really interesting prospect that plays modern game perfectly, has great hands and wastes almost ZERO touches. Strong overhead and in first touch which is key, clean and composed with strong pressure potential that could lift to the level req quickly in AFL system, the base and talent are there and can see this guy having impact almost instantly. Has knocks but big upside! Cult figure alert - hair.. is all I’ll say!!!

 

4) Sam Fisher (Carlton VFL):

Genuine speedster that would be a handy addition if he continues to improve on recent outings. Pressure acts decision making much improved and will 100% be on an AFL list in 2020. 

 

5) Cory Gregson (SANFL):

Former Cat who was close to being picked up LY but just missed out, however 2019 form suggests his body is as sound as it’s ever been and if stays fit would be an asset to any team needing a small fwd who can play mid minutes in small bursts. Clean and Smart - One id personally love to see given a crack at MFC. Think Lincoln Mccarthey - Step quicker & less brain snaps albeit with less raw talent and “freak” ability but saying that he’s got gifts too, not to be missed if he’s healthy - Clubs already lining up.

Others:

Mitch Hibberd (VFL)

Jye Bolton (WAFL)

Wil Hickmott (WAFL)

Luke Meadows (WAFL)

Jake Di Pasquale (Sorrento/Casey)

 

It is going to be very interesting to see what happens but there are a heap of Sydney Stack/Fritter/Kelly types around just needing that opportunity.. ripper draft class next year and if we do badly enough Rowell would be genuine DEADLY with Brayshaw and Oliver - imagine! But yes I’d rather we didn’t finish last also, but it’s still fun to picture! Can’t see us being anywhere near his range but who knows.

Fristly, thanks for the info - good to have such insight.

It can't be new news to the club that our list is unbalanced and largely one-dimensional.  Wondering, why would we not have gone for one of those with our last pick instead of taking Lockhart a month ago.  Not a knock on Lockhart but we need someone like O'Reilly, Pickett, Saad, Lowson more than we need another small contested ball midfielder type.

FWD depth and a speedy type would be great to have right now.  We could have also taken one of those with the pick we used for Wagner in the special preseason draft.

Maybe not foresee 1-4.  But they should have foreseen the impact of the rule changes and that our list was unbalanced when we took Wagner and Lockhart.

Our recruiting was based on the 2018 game plan ie zone defence, forward half team that relied heavily on winning the contest. 

There was sufficient experience in many games last year including the prelim that showed our game plan has severe limitations and it is easy to score against.  Goodwin said so this week and DL's and commentators have been saying it since the Hawks game early last year.  Its not new news.  Yet we continued to commit recruiting resources to it.  Blind faith? Stubborness? Inflexible?  To me the game plan weaknesses were foreseeable.

We now play recruiting catch up. 

Maybe they have just woken up and realised that over the last two years we have traded out (with good reason) players who contributed about 70-80 goals per annum without replacing them and now we don't have fwd depth?  Its no wonder our play is breaking down in our fwd half.  Blind faith that a fwd line with only one experienced AFL fwd (Melksham) would get the job done?  The severity of the AVB and Hannan injuries were known at the time we took Lockhart.  The recruiting took out no insurance for fwd line depth in case Tom Mc was injured and Sam needed more development or they fell out of form.  The risks were clearly foreseeable.

If 17 other coaches could foresee the impact of the rules and recruited accordingly, why could not ours?   I would think our list management should foresee the risks of limited depth in key positions on the ground particularly tall forwards, wingmen.

I agree with some of your points but the rule changes and our recruiting around these are not the reason we are in the current position.

It is so evident to see that it’s purely effort at this point in time, the players are being lazy defensively.  The footage is damning at how far behind they are lagging their opponents and this has nothing to do with speed but it’s their willingness to chase. 

T Mac out of form and Weed not stepping up has hurt us I agree but key position players are hard to find and if anything it may have been just another developing key position player they could have targeted.   I’m sure you’ll agree that our key backs were our achilles heal and they filled this void with May and Lever but unfortunately we have had some bad luck with these players. 

I think the only place we are missing speed is up forward.  Hannan has hurt us as has Smith.  I think they have recruited some small forwards with pace in Chandler and Bedford but they are just 1st year players.

Some are saying rule changes have meant our list is unbalanced. I do not agree, an unbalanced list is an unbalanced list regardless of rules. How do you expect to play the MCG without speedy wingman. Come on, that much has not changed.
