    It's two things.  You can pin it on specific players all you like, but individuals aren't really the problem for us right now.  It's how quickly we move the ball, and the poor use of the ball going forward.

    Both are related.  We get it, we bomb it and we generally turn it over at the moment.  Our gameplan is to kick it in there, keep it in there and get a goal.  Every now and then we might hit a lead, or get someone out the back, but it's a rarity.  Teams have pretty much worked us out when we go forward.  A prime example for me was the first foray forward in the last term.  Melksham marks, turns and kicks... to basically a three on one, as the Cats all went straight to the hot spot.  When the ball hits the deck they have the numbers, because we usually don't move it quick enough, and then they run it down the other end as they've set up to do so, while we have sent numbers forward to lock the ball in.  They have acres of space to hit targets and we can't defend it. 

    I'm an optimist, but this isn't working.  We need to look closely at it.   What's the fix?  Weideman and Tom McDonald can't get near it, so we get stuck into them, but what chance to they have when the ball is kicked long to a contest all the time?  What are they supposed to do?  I know we have players down on form, but the way we go about things doesn't help.  Shifting a few out for others won't change a whole lot at this stage.

    I thought our efforts around the ball were much, much better.  We had a dip pretty much all night and worked hard to match them in all areas.  Our ball use was poor, though, while they took every chance they got.  Think about the third term.  We kicked a few points - one of them being a goal might have changed our mindset, changed our outlook.  But we missed them all, they scored one from one entry and it was pretty much all over.

    I mean, getting it forward isn't the problem for us.  Using it properly and/or keeping it in there, is.

    Positives?  Our mids worked hard all night.  I like the look of young Sparrow and what he can bring to the side.  KK will be better for the run.  Outside of that, there isn't a whole lot else.

    Individuals aren't the problem, here.  As I said, we have players down on form, but they aren't the core issues right now.  The game plan is the major issue.  We need to fix it and quick.  It's not panic stations for me yet.  We can easily still make finals.  But we need to change it up to do it.

    Chin up, people.  Let's do our best to stick by the club and hope we bring the same intent, and better usage forward of the ball, on Friday night.  If we do then we win and get our season back on track.

    I spent $615 on a redlegs membership for a guaranteed grand final ticket. For what? Watching this crap? Our forward line and backline are a shambles and we are slow and can't use the ball properly. Only a handful of players putting in and that is only the start of our problems. 

    You fooled me once Melbourne you won't fool me again. Back to 3 game membership for me. What a disgrace this club is.

    Again, right now, it really isn't the problem.  The game plan is.  We bomb it, they get it and then run it down in space to score.  Rinse and repeat.

    Stopped watching very early 2nd qtr, when it was apparent we were no better than last week.

     

    Ok, we know the talent is there, so what happened?

    Was it effort?

    Was it game plan?

    Was it literally "one of those nights"?

    I am srsly disappointed you couldn’t slot the early 90s Manangatang 1sts in there. Total sizzle.

     

    Ouyen had a mean streak AND the Dees colours (their pies weren’t as good as they didn’t serve those soft flakey lake boga pies but do stuff em) and the less said about Sea Lake the better

    I will bet many of those extra inside 50's were a result of chaotic back and forth at the 50, under intense pressure, and not actual targeted inside 50's

    Sadly the club thinks playing a couple of good finals last year was a great achievement but too quickly overlooked the dismal showing in the preliminary final. Too many short comings in th team that haven’t been addressed

    One word. Misery. Fifty years of this crap. We were never going to win this game but didn’t even give a yelp. Good clubs Geelong, Hawthorn just keep winning loser clubs like Melbourne alway fail. We are so far off it year on year of crap at least we won’t have the misery of another flooding in the finals. Sure we will get more Goodwin [censored].

      Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.

      It’s game day and the Demons are chasing a fourth straight win as we take on the high flying Hawks at the G. After decades of being tormented by the Hawks the Dees will be keen to extend their 7 year dominance over Hawthorn.

    • NON-MFC: Round 09

      Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos.
