1,000 more than on Wednesday!

Good to see a lot of fans keeping the faith (they don't read or post on DL?)

This is 8,000 up on similar time last year ie ~20%.  Not bad for a team sitting 1-5 and on the bottom of the ladder as of Friday.

If trend continues 54,000 is in sight.

My involuntary response to checking out the website today and seeing 49,636: WOW! That's incredible.!

It really is tremendous news since the last I saw it seemed stuck on 48,080. We will certainly crack 50K this year which is a great achievement in the circumstances.

We are on our way to redeeming our Status in the football world, we just need some luck with injuries and getting our best team out on the park.

All things considered,  that is a more than decent number.  Forget the 70k talk,  that is for the future and we'll need to play finals consistently to achieve that number.

I like the ambition anyway ... 50k has a nice ring to it with 1 finals appearance since 2006.  Remarkable in fact.

Thank you, Peter Jackson. Without his help we'd be nowhere.

We'll definitely be able to announce 50k at our next home game. That'll be a proud moment as one of many supporters who had stuck fat all these years. What a terrific effort given where we've been.

What do you mean I wonder?

Socialist, unlikely

Socialite, possibly,

Elitist, possibly,

Sociopath, don't think so.

It may be a new category, a friendly ghost?

I don't mind a new word occasionawhile.

Bloody amazing achievement by the club to get to 50K members. 5 years ago and I would not have believed it to be possible. It gives real hope we can knock over 55 and 60K if we get some consistent finals/success

Our membership growth goes further back than PJ though AF ... Jimmy targeted 40k when many thought we weren't in a position to get to that figure.

Our membership growth from '07 to '13 was also quite remarkable when considering how unsuccessful on the field we were.

Goes even further back if we are doing a proper analysis.  PJ continued on the good work started earlier and then added real expertise.  The NT deal - same story.

Our win/loss ratio in that 7 year stretch was round about 35/118. Any sort of growth with that dismal record is quite amazing ... negative growth could easily have been the outcome.

That is how I read it.

has there been an official announcement re cracking 50k?

outstanding result if so

given the doldrums we have been in since 07-14, any membership growth over that time was remarkable, and if we can every get it together on field like we have off-field then we'll be in a far, far better place as a football club

If we can pull 50,000 members with a 55 year drought and no “Home Base” yet, then 70,000 + will be very achievable numbers going forward...

The gloss of the rnd 7 win has been overshadowed by negative stories about May and fitness staff (Shaun Smith story).

The club will want some good news out there rather pronto so wouldn't be surprised to see it announced ASAP maybe even tomorrow.

Epic!  We’re a Loyal resilient lot aren’t we , albeit a bit weather beaten and angry. 50 k Is a big achievement. . Hoping this is just the start of big things on the field and off it. A flag, a new home base and up into the 60-70 k plus members.

A win on the weekend would also keep a hint of hope for this season . if we can keep that window open , get players bk and start knocking over some big teams in then maybe 53-5 k this year?

We are about 8K ahead of where we were last year at the same time:

Last year we only added about 250-300 members a week to the end of June, so we cannot expect much more than that to happen.

This would give us about 53-54K at season end.  A fabulous start to the 70k target, but how much better would it have been with early season wins.  Still 8k is nearly a 20% increase from last year....not too many clubs would have done this!

Didn't think i would ever see that number linked with the MFC.  Top effort by all.  Volunteers especially.

Need a tad more luck with injuries but if so we are finals bound.

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
